These few weeks before training camps open are a dead time in the NFL, so it was nice of ESPN to survey the NFL’s 32 head coaches and give the fans a lot of material for arguments.
The latest report from that survey: NFL head coaches were asked to identify which player they thought teams would select first overall in a league-wide draft of current players, if every single player in the league were available.
Twenty-nine of the 32 head coaches responded to the question, and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady won handily, with 22 votes. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning was second with six votes.
The one other vote went to Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor, which probably means that Dolphins coach Tony Sparano decided to vote for Taylor in an attempt to give the impression that there’s a burgeoning trade market for him.

Hmm that’s interesting, I didn’t know two-thirds of NFL head coaches were dumb. Strange.

What about any votes for Farve Beans? Oh yeah, I forgot, he’s retired; maybe, maybe not, maybe, maybe not; he loves the Packer organization; maybe, maybe not, I think I’m going to be sick..blah…does this move Greg Jennings and Driver up 5 or 6 places in the all important FF WR rankings!!…maybe, maybe not!

the real question is how many votes did Big Ben get? Brady is highly overrated. good at his position, yes but the people around Brady make him look a lot better than he really is. Manning Overrated, once again a good QB, yes but over rated. Then you have Big Ben who if he has a good game he is put in the #3 slot under Manning. Big Ben has everything, the talent, the arm, the skill, and the look of a great QB. So the O-line slacks a few games and Ben Gets underrated. I would like to see Manning/Brady try and scramble and break takles in the back field like Ben does. The pure fact the Ben does not have a solid O-line adn still make plays happen and still puts up the numbers that he does should put him as the #1 QB in the NFL. not Sir Cheat-a-lot Brady, or Hollywood Manning
Go Stillers!

Peyton has the better arm, but Brady is the better leader. However, IMO with the first pick overall should go to either the best offensive, or defensive lineman, games are won and lost in the trenches, especially in the playoffs, i.e. last years SB. What good is a franchise QB if he is never in the upright position.

Well Farve isflat out older than Brady or Manning so what good could he really do a franchise. As for Brady or Manning, not too many coaches would be too unhappy to end up with either one. That is a big discrepancy though…22-6. Is it the old ‘Brady did more with less?’ or just that he’s been to 4 Super Bowls to Mannings one and now has some of the flashy numbers to go along with it? Having to such quarterbacks to argue about makes the offseason almost bearable.

mr. clutch in brady over mr. everything in manning? that is odd to me.
you can not take away 3 rings and one of the best statistical year by a qb, but when it is all said and done, manning will probably be the best statistical qb ever, along a superbowl win (could be more to come).
i take manning over brady 10 time out of 10.

This can’t be right. Brady’s only success came from Big Bad Belichick stealing signs! He knew the defenses and as Steve Young says–if he had that info the NFL would be child’s play. In fact, the fact that Brady only won 3 Superbowls instead of 6 shows that he is terrible. How could that cheater not have won the other 3?! How could these coached be so dumb? Brady’s not a good player, he’s terrible! He’s just a good cheater!!!!!! Arghhhhhhh!!!

Then why has a LT been such a high draft pick and received such huge salaries over the last few years?
I agree with rlr - games are won and lost in the trenches…the Bears made it to the SB with Grossman at QB and a solid O-line….case and point.

Dude, put the magic mushrooms down…. Ben absolutely is the best QB in his division. Derek Anderson and Carson have 0 Super Bowl rings. Carson’s been a bust and Derek Anderson needs to prove this year that he wasn’t a one year wonder. And the Ravens….well even their fans don’t know who their QB is yet…. I’m sorry, maybe you were putting downs of acid in your eye. And I am no Steelers fan.

lol @ the Ben homer. Delusions of grandeur.
Brady has done it with average talent around him and done better than PM with great talent around him. We don’t know what PM would do with average talent around him. How could anyone pick Manning over Brady? I have wondered that for many, many years now. PM makes more $$, he doesn’t perform well in the playoffs, he’s a horrible leader, etc. etc. There’s no contest…NONE.

I.C. Lightpounder.
Are you serious with Big Ben being better than Brady and Manning? Typical Steelers fan, never giving anyone else credit if their not a beloved Steeler.
Brady doesn’t have a solid O-line either and he still managed to win 3 Super Bowls! But there’s really no point in arguing with a guy who is 37 years old, still living in mom’s basement, and wearing a Big Ben jersey. Isn’t it time for your shift at your local Subway?

Roethlisberger is better because Anderson and Palmer have no rings? The only thing that proves is that football is a TEAM sports - something I would have thought to be common knowledge. Roethlisberger is decent at best, and has always been surrounded by a good all-around club. Let’s not forget he absolutely blew in his Super Bowl appearance, so that ring means jack shit when talking about his talent.

This is true. Eli is a decent QB, but not on the level that his brother and Brady are. A good pass rush can take out the best of them.

And how many of you are Pro Football GMs with access to tape and scouts?
Brady didn’t have signs last year and had a tremendous season. Whoever said that he had better talent around him than Manning must not have been paying attention before 2007. Reggie Wayne? Marvin Harrison? Tom Moore? Hello?
The offensive talent around Brady was never up to the bar set by Indy and he’s had more offensive coaching changes, but look at his success.
There is no way in hell Rotalwke;berger is the best quarterback in the league (or conference) - how could he be the best player if he’s not the best at his own position?

I’m a Steeler fan and I’m more than happy with Ben. First he was only good because he threw it 15-20 times a game. I’ve never understood it. He’s regulated to throwing the ball when everybody in the stadium knows that they have no choice but throw it and still succeeds. Somehow that’s bad. They opened up the offense last year and he set records. Meh, people see what they want to see.
Brady made his reputation in the clutch and I’ll bet that’s why he got the nod over Manning. It’ll be interesting to see if Brady remains as clutch in the future. I think that will ultimately determine how history views the NE Super Bowl teams.
