In a welcome respite from the will he or won’t he discussion surrounding Brett Favre, another NFL quarterback has made it clear that he’s not returning for the 2008 season.
Sure, it’s Kelly Holcomb, a player of somewhat lesser stature than the Packer great, but it’s still nice to see a player who makes up his mind. Holcomb has taken a job as a sideline reporter for radio broadcasts of Middle Tennessee State games. He’s a Blue Raider alum and, before the September 6 game with Maryland, will be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. It sounds sort of like the plan for the Packer opener against the Vikings this season, except Holcomb seems a lot more likely to see his retirement through.
Holcomb was with the Vikings last season but his season ended in late October after he suffered a neck injury against the Eagles. It’s a bit surprising he didn’t jump onboard the trend of signing a vanity contract to retire with his favorite team. It may have been hard for him to choose among the six that employed him at one time or another but it’s hard to imagine he had a finer moment than throwing for 429 yards for the Browns in a playoff loss in 2002.

Good for Kelly. Wish him well. Are you sure you dont want to start speculating about his return? I would love to see Favre come back. But only if he is a Packer. I dont want to see one of the NFL greats get thrown on a different team Struggle to pick up a new system then fail miserably all the while crushing the hopes and dreams of the fans and frachise that picks him up. It too late in his career to do that. I still would love to see on more great season out of him as a Packer.

As a Steelers fan, I hated when Tim Couch did so awful he was pulled. This guy was dynamite off of the bench.

It’s a sad day…..we loved you in that game against the Steelers in ‘o2, Kelly. Who knows what would’ve happened if our defense didn’t suck ass in the 2nd half. Good luck.

November 28, 2004. I remember it like it was yesterday, my FF team, The Saintly Stingrays were in desperate need of a win. With my team riding the playoff fence, I perused the waiver wire and decided to give Kelly Holcomb the nod. What did he do? I repeat, what did he do? 5 TD passes, and 413 yards against the Bengals giving a much needed victory over the Turf Godz. Enjoy a long successful retirement Dude, you are admired by this FF geek. Cheers to you!

This is the type of person that Pro Football players should be: Classly, give back to their community and just be a regular guy. Kelly, welcome back to the Mid-Stare fulltime.

Kelly was cool while he was in Philly. He was an asset to the team and the community.
Maybe there’s a coaching career ahead for him.

Kelly started out as a backup to Manning and showed some signs of talent there. In a class move by the Colts he was released at his request so he could follow the Colts QB coach to Cleveland to provide insurance for the newly minted Tim Couch.
Contrast that to how teams like Tampa Bay and the Raiders behave.

He was a decent QB but had the misfortune of playing his last season in MN where they couldn’t recognize a good QB even if he was wearing #4 and fell into their laps.

I played with Kelly in the Vinny Pro-Celebrity-Am in May 2008 and he is a class act. Good luck Kelly in your new role. I am sure you can enjoy being with your family more.

I was bummed when Holcomb left the Browns in the first place. I so badly wanted him to be first string QB. He was so incredibly talented. He helped re-form the Cardiac Kids again. btw i was lucky today and found a #10 jersey w/Holcomb on the back , official NFL at a used shop! I will wear it every game day!
