In a welcome respite from the will he or won’t he discussion surrounding Brett Favre, another NFL quarterback has made it clear that he’s not returning for the 2008 season.

Sure, it’s Kelly Holcomb, a player of somewhat lesser stature than the Packer great, but it’s still nice to see a player who makes up his mind.  Holcomb has taken a job as a sideline reporter for radio broadcasts of Middle Tennessee State games.  He’s a Blue Raider alum and, before the September 6 game with Maryland, will be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. It sounds sort of like the plan for the Packer opener against the Vikings this season, except Holcomb seems a lot more likely to see his retirement through.

Holcomb was with the Vikings last season but his season ended in late October after he suffered a neck injury against the Eagles.  It’s a bit surprising he didn’t jump onboard the trend of signing a vanity contract to retire with his favorite team.  It may have been hard for him to choose among the six that employed him at one time or another but it’s hard to imagine he had a finer moment than throwing for 429 yards for the Browns in a playoff loss in 2002.
