Receiver Marques Colston was the steal of the draft in 2006, a seventh-round pick who has become the team’s go-to receiver.
His three-year rookie deal expires after the 2008 season, at which time he’ll become a restricted free agent.
Per the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the team has had preliminary discussions with Colston’s agent regarding an extension. But no progress toward a new deal has been made.
A holdout by Colston is unlikely, but he clearly deserves a raise. When and if he’ll get one remains to be seen.
They’d better move soon, or another team might be willing to give up a first-round pick and a third-round pick in order to pilfer him from the Saints next March. Given that drafting a wideout in round one is even more of a crapshoot than taking a quarterback, a proven commodity is well worth a one and a three.

I’d give up a one and a three for him. But then, I’m a Vikes fan and still looking for the replacement for Randy.

Florio….aren’t you the same guy that was touting what a “great offer” Washington made for Chad Johnson? As I recall that was a 1st and a 3rd for a far better receiver than Colston is at this stage of his career.
Really….come clean now. What exactly is your axe to grind with Cincy? Did a Bengal not sign a football for you when you were a kid or something?

Don’t be stupid Saints. Give Colston his money. He deserves it more than Will Smith and Charles Grant.

Lito and a 2nd for Colston!!!
Really, though, if Colston is available next March, it should be a piece of cake for the Eagles to get him.

JohnStofa if you’re talking about this year it was 2 1sts offered up by Washington for a disgruntled Chad not a 1st and a 3rd. BIG difference.

I think a first and third is a bit of a reach for Colston. A first yes, but not both.

Colston is overrated. He’s only good because Brees is a great quarterback and they have nobody else to throw it to. They would be foolish to give him big-time money.

With Colston’s numbers (11TDs 1202yds in 2007, 8TDs 1038yds in 2006) the saints will keep him around. Hopefully he also gets a well deserved roster spot in the pro bowl as well.

What a joke. First, if anything, Colston will be a restricted free agent next year and there isn’t a deal out there the Saints wouldn’t be willing to match. Second, it won’t get that far. Just as the Saints have extended Charles Grant and Will Smith, they will extend Marques Colston. They want him here and he wants to be here. And the Saints have already stated that he is their top priority. Non story…but it is the dead of NFL summer so…

It should be a “piece of cake” for the Eagles to sign Colston? I am sure he remembers every team passing on him multiple times in the draft, including the Eagles, and appreciates the Saints giving him an opportunity. The only way he leaves is if the Saints botch this. If he leaves, he will go to a good team, not the Eagles.

I agree it’s a non-story he will be resigned soon along with Jahri Evans. They have a year to get it done. Non story. Perfect place for Colston.

I think the bigger story is that the Saints haven’t signed a single one of their draftees. What have they been doing, exactly, during the months of March and June?
While other teams are making sure their rookie classes are going to be able to make an impact this year, the Saints are….well, I don’t know what they’re doing.

Colston would look good in Eagles Green. But a first and a third is kinda steep. Is he consistently a game changing Receiver? I think he has some nice games.
For the Eagles, I’d rather draft first round and third round wideouts and take my chances with the picks…

Not a big story if you are a Saints fan. This happens every year, but Loomis and Co. usually get it done the week of camp. Not worried about it.

How does Colston feel being a late 7th round pick, being payed the league minimum and clearly out-playing his fellow draftee Reggie Bush, who makes millions upon millions more than him? I would think the longer the Saints drag their feet and the more Subway commercials with Reggie Bush that Marques sees, he would only get more upset with the deal as it stands.
The guy has been a standout WR since his first year, which is a tall order for most rookies in that position. He’ll only get better and demand more in compensation as this goes on.

Gibson….to be accurate it WAS a first and a third with the POSSIBILITY of it becoming two firsts if Chad were to hit some performance incentives.
To quote you, “BIG difference.”
And honestly I don’t care how many mid to late round picks you offer for an established top tier player, it isn’t a good bet. If you look at 2007 you’re basically talking about Chad Johnson for Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis as a BEST case scenario.
Thanks….but no thanks.

Only a douchebag would want Chad Johnson over Marques Colston. Chad is much older and one of the most me first players around. Not a guy you should want on your team unless your name is Jerry Jones….

Gallaghedj311…..only an idiot would fail to see that for all his talk his actions so far have not come close to the classic “me first” players this league has seen. We had Carl Pickens as the first “wide receiver/team narcissist” in the league.
Not to say he won’t eventually blow up, but up to now it’s all been talk. Not like he put on a workout show in front of his house with some whacked out interview where his agent made his lips move.
What I want is someone that will produce….just like every other fan out there.
