Asked about our report that agent Bus Cook is telling people that quaterback Brett Favre wants to play for the Carolina Panthers, G.M. Marty Hurney said, “I don’t know where these things come from.”
Well, Marty, here’s how it works. Human beings have vocal cords. At a point roughly between 18 and 30 months of age, human beings begin using their vocal cords to articulate words. By the time we reach adulthood, we use them all the freakin’ time.
In this case, “these things” came from Cook using those vocal cords to talk to other people about Favre’s desire to play for the Panthers.
Hurney should understand how the process works. After all, he’s a newspaper man who got his nose far enough up Bobby Beathard’s rear end to somehow become an employee of an NFL front office, and he then navigated the process to somehow become the General Manager of a team. So but for the fact that people will pay money to know what other people are saying and doing, Hurney never would have established a pathway into the job he now holds.

Just when I hoping we’re going to close out a a day without a Favre report, this shows up.
This also get started by blokes who start rumors from “sources close to Favre” or what have you.
One of the reasons I don’t visit as much as I used to is it seems this wheel keeps going round and round. Most recently Walker, now Favre, next it will be a quarterback or your neighborhood Walgreen’s manager.

Jealous?…..or what???? No need to put a “cheap shot” on Marty…..He’s got more CLASS in his little finger than you have in your little world.
I liked reading your blog….but don’t push it…just stick to reporting.

you people are jack-asses. Mike can say whatever he wants, and Marty Hurney used to be a reporter and is now acting like he knows nothing about reporters and how journalism works. If you don’t like the post, then don’t come back to PFT. There are plenty of normal people here who like reading Florio’s comments. I think he’s funny as hell.
I don’t have a man-crush on him or anything, i’m just saying the people commenting above me are over reacting a bit.

Is anyone else tired of hearing these Favre comeback stories. The guys just like MJ and Montana, he’s still got a fire burning in him to play the game, why does continue to retire and vice verca. You wanna know why? He’s another TO (He craves the Media attention). I believe Green Bay is absolutely right in not wanting him back. He’s a awesome QB (If you ignore the int’s)but who wants to deal with this on again off again retirement deal year after year. Great career Brett, but it’s time to call it quits, and that coming from a Mississippi native as well.

I don’t think it would take 10 days in a new locker room and with a new organization before Brett said to himself “What the heck am I doing back in football?”
At this stage, he probably likes the IDEA of football a lot more than he likes football…
Just like the rest of us old timers until after the first couple of plays of rough touch football or 3 on 3 basketball. LOL

I’m pretty sure Hurney understands how the process works…perhaps he is referring to the idiocy of Favre thinking wherever he went he would just be installed as the starter.

Well Mike, here’s where they come from. People have web pages with ads on them, and when they have trouble coming up with content, they recycle the same story over and over again.
Give it a rest. There’s no story here, period.

I agree with the other posters. This post was unnecessarily caustic. In fact, maybe it’s just me, but Florio has seemed to develop an arrogance/edge over the last few months.

OK, girls, you done bitchin’ yet?
You don’t like Florio’s site anymore, feel free to leave. See ya back in about, um, seven seconds. (Don’t worry, Mike, they’re not going anywhere.) This is the best free compilation of all things football that exists. It’s called a ‘rumor mill’ for a reason. You can always go to ESPN for the ‘real’ news. Gag! Hours behind Florio in reporting anything.

If Cook has talked to Hurney or not, I expect the same comment from Hurney.
So the way I see it, it’s a no news situation.
Panthers don’t have the cap space, and don’t have the draft pick GB would want for him. So it’s not the Panthers.
Up next is
Tampa,
Minny,
Bears,
or Skins.
Bring it media whores.

As we know, it is a slow week. Good job Mike, of making a story of nothing. I see the Seinfeld connection…a show (story) about nothing. lol To thing Jerry made a nice living off of that!
Your point was well made. That’s what newspaper people do, create stories about things that were heard and said. This is not earth changing news, like ‘yellow cake’ imported from Africa or something. We’re talking sports personalities where there is a tad more leeway.
