Adam Schefter of NFL Network lays out the procedure that quarterback Brett Favre would follow if/when he decides to play football again.
Favre currently is on the reserve/retired list. To be activated from it, Favre only has to send written notice to the Packers and to the league of his desire to play. The Packers would then have 24 hours to reinstate Favre, or to release him.
The other possibility would be to activate Favre and then attempt to trade him, if the Packers don’t want him back on the team. But they would be required to use a roster spot on him until he is traded.
As to whether the Packers want Favre, Schefter reports that there are folks in the organization who go both ways on the issue.
As to whether Favre wants to play, Schefter confirms that Favre is training as if he’s returning.
If he chooses to do so, the Packers have limited options — and there’s a good chance that they like none of them.

I think it’s pretty big deal that Favre is training like he’s returning. Why would he be working out so hard? And how do we know for sure if he is training like he’s returning? Is his trainer from Arizona out there with him working him out?

I like Favre but it’s time to hang it up he’s 38 has had a great run but enough is enough.
What’s it going to be a every season retirement then a come back he needs to do the right thing and fill out his retirement papers sit back and watch the new kid on the block and maybe even give him some more pointers when he makes a mistake.

It would put the Packers in a high-stakes, lose-lose situation. I think they would rather eat his salary than let him go to Minny or Chicago. I would bet that if he shows up and the team doesn’t want him they would trade him to an AFC team.
Its kind of ludacris talking about the Packers not wanting him though. GB was one of the top three teams in the conference last year and would have made the SB if they hadn’t had an all around terrible game vs NYG. This mostly young team should only be better, and having Favre return should give the team similar success to last year. Though he has been “retired” for a few months now, it’s not like he has missed anything, as he attended little-to-no offseason activities in recent years, and as long as he has kept himself in good shape he could show up to training camp the exact same way as in the past and be great. Only I’d bet that Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t be quite as friendly with him this year LOL.
That could possibly put Rodgers over the edge and demand to get out of town. Though he is totally unproven, it would be a killer for the organization and fans to see a Favre-led team have less success than last year, Favre retires, then AR has a stellar career somewhere else.

What are the salary cap implications of Favre returning? I imagine he has a significant cap hit and I expect Ted Thompson has been planning for 2008 as if Favre wasn’t playing. Not only would they need to make room on the 80 man roster, they’d need to make room on the 116 million dollar cap (or however much it is this year).

Maybe the packers thought something of this nature was going to happen. Everyone has been wondering why they are so far under the cap, maybe it was for a situation like this. Would the packers pull a Keyshawn or T.O. on Brett? Certainly seems like a possiblity.

If Favre is sincere, the Packers might take him back. They would probably have to trade Aaron Rodgers, then promote Brian Brohm to be Favre’s backup. I guess it depends whether the Packers really believe in Rodgers, or if they think Brohm has as much upside to be a starter in a year or two. I think Thompson and McCarthy want to win a Super Bowl with Rodgers, because they would look like geniuses if they can win it all with Rodgers at QB. Otherwise, it would be Favre that won the Super Bowl, not Thompson and McCarthy.
The problem with Favre is that he didn’t look that good in the Packers 4 losses last year. He played poorly against Chicago, especially late when it was really cold. In Dallas, he was horrible, then he forced the pass that was intercepted in overtime against the Giants. Is he really going to be any better this year? Does Favre want to come back because he misses the game, or because he misses the attention of being the star QB? It could get ugly fast if he comes back and decides after the third game that he should have stayed retired.

So is this the avenue for an easy ticket to free-agency? Just retire, file no papers, let the team move on and nail ‘em at the last minute to gain a release or they have to suffer roster spot and salary?
I would expect that the league should have something whereby if you announce retirement, you must file papers by some date or else you are expected to play. If you choose to retire beyond that date and start of season, then papers need to file immediately.
Of course, then if bound to play, the player could dog it all season while getting paid…there’s never an easy win.

What is he going to do, come back as a Packer or a Panther……at 38??? How many more year(s) does he have (um….perhaps six months, since he does not want to practice)? Who wants to pay the money he will want for the limited year (not “years,”) or upside (assuming the talent is still an upside)? If you are an owner/GM/head coach, do you want to roll the dice on Brett Favre? Do you want to make a one year run and alienate your younger, starting QB in favor of the guy can’t sh!t or leave the bowl?
This story is silly. He’s done. It’s July. The NFL and everyone else needs a story. This is a nice one, but it’s garbage.

I think if we take a look at the last few offseasons I think one could make the case that Favre just doesnt want to play in Green Bay anymore.
Maybe its the cold weather, maybe its the psycho fans or maybe he just wants to try something different. Is that so wrong?
“But Favre should retire a packer..boo hoo”
Why? Who gives a crap, you had the guy for a long time and Im sure you enjoyed it. Maybe he wants to try city life for a while, or maybe he wants to go to Texas and try being a real life cowboy. Maybe hes pulling a hulk hogan and hes tired of being a good guy, and wants to try the villian role.
If Favre plays in Green Bay are gas prices going to go down? Is the world going to suddenly find peace? Of course not, grow up you retarded overgrown babies. Who really gets hurt if Favre plays elsewhere?
I already love the NFL, to the point that my girlfriend dubs NFL season our “relationship offseason”. I cant even imagine how excited I would be to see Favre in Viking Purple, those would be amazingly emotional games. So stop all this posturing, let the guy go. This isnt a disney fairy tale.

If Favre does return, and that’s a big if, the Packers would be wise to stay out of the fray and simply release him to play with some other team. Lets say the Packers take him back and their offense sputters early in the ’08 season resulting in a few loses? Regardless of who the starter is at that point they have an instant QB controversy in Green Bay that could haunt them throughout the season. Why would you willingly place your team in that position? If he wants to play, let him…somewhere else.

Has PFT turned into the Brett Farve network? The man crush feelings are surpassing Madden as I type. Whats next? A Farve family reality show? A Farve cam? Maybe we could get a daily update on what he’s wearing, shaved/unshaven, what he’s eaten?
Yeah, he’s a great guy, great quarterback, if he decides to come back, so be it, but enough with this already. This crap has gone on for 2 years now.

Favre needs to stop playing games and unequivocally state that he is retired and intends to stay that way.
The Packers really don’t want this mess with the reduced number of roster spots this year due to the demise of NFL-Europe. Having him come back would just take a spot away from someone who might have a real chance of making the team instead of just crying for attention.

The Packers have the cap room to carry Favre through the whole season if they have/choose to.
I could easily see the Packers asking for a two year commitment from Favre, and trading Rodgers to someone for a 2nd round pick.
That pick would easily allow them to do what the next rumor suggests, trade for Jason Taylor without having GM Ted Thompson’s heart stop by giving up a high draft choice.
If the Packers didn’t want to trade Rodgers, I say welcome back Favre and open up the QB competition. Make him earn the job in training camp.

One more thing…
If Favre did come back and Green Bay put him in the backup role or he caused trouble…he would be taking $12 million of the peoples’ money due to GB ownership structure. I hope it doesn’t get that ugly.

I don’t look at the glass as half empty (Packers in a bind), I look at it as the glass as half full—the Packers have a chance to trade him and get something in return. As it stands now, the Packers get nothing for Favre’s retirement, if they can somehow get a 2nd or 3rd rounder from an AFC team, they should ship him out on the first plane leaving town.
All this BS about how you don’t want to be the GM who traded Brett Favre, I think Ted Thompson would pull the trigger faster than Dick Cheney. Favre has one, maybe two years left. He didn’t exactly play well in the playoffs since 1997 (7 int’s in a St Louis playoff loss, he threw up a duck in the 4th and 26 loss to Philly that got Philly in fg range, he wasn’t stellar in home playoff loses to both the Falcons and the Queens, and of course, his last pass of last season was an INT that put the Giants in FG range. ) Given all that, Ted wants to see what Rodgers can do and that is exactly what he is planning on doing. If Favre wants to come back, great, lets see who wants to trade for him.

Favre has them right where he wants them, and they are starting to squirm. TT/MM would like to have Favre around just in case Rodgers is a train wreck. If they could just keep him on the hook, they have an insurance policy.
Now that we are naming names, Favre has flushed out the cheapskate TT, while MM looks on in horror.
Favre will play this year, and if TT doesn’t show him enough respect, it won’t be with the packers.
