Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has touched off a major firestorm in Packerland, via the following quote from the new Sports Illustrated: “I don’t feel I need to sell myself to the fans. They need to get on board now or keep their mouths shut.”
Rodgers has addressed the remarks, but refused to say whether he was misquoted or whether the remarks were taken out of context. (In other words, he was quoted properly, and his words weren’t taken out of context.)
“I do care deeply about the fans and I think anybody who has been to training camp and sees I’m a lot of times the last one out signing autographs sees I care about the fans, I care about their opinions,” Rodgers tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “Everybody wants the fans to care for them and to pull for them and I am no different. That’s why the thing that would bother me the most would be if anybody would be offended by the things that were stated because I do care about the fans. . . .
“The biggest disappointment in this whole thing is if anybody is offended by the stuff I say because I think that my track record pretty much speaks for itself in the way I feel about the fans,” Rodgers said. ”I don’t want the wrong message to come out of this.”
Okay, so Rodgers cares deeply about the fans, but he also thinks they need to get on board now or keep their mouths shuts. And he means no offense in saying that.
It actually makes sense to us, and the comments aren’t inconsistent. But if Rodgers’ words are an example of how he deals with pressure weeks before it’s time to line up against a much-improved Minnesota defense for a season-opening Monday nighter that will be overshadowed by a Festivale of Brett Favre crotch nuzzling, we fear that Aaron’s head might explode on the evening of September 8.

It’s the Rogers Era!!! He is the QB taking the lead. The fans do need to shut and support him, Or this Farve thing could go on forever.
They need to get on board and the shut up statement is right on. Thats the QB I want in Green Bay!!

What “major firestorm” are you referring too, Mr; Florio? Is all of Wisconsin up in arms over this?
He made the comments to SI, realized it could be considered offensive, and wanted to clarify how he felt about the fans before the article came out. Unless “Packerland” is located in W. Virginia, how do you know there’s a “major firestorm”?
Aaron’s track record with the fans (and his teammates for that matter) does speak for itself. He’s very active at fan events.
I’m glad he’s got confidence in himself. Was it the best choice of words? In retrospect, no. But in an interview he’s giving spoken answers, not written, and doesn’t have the luxury of editing everything he says. Weigh this one statement against how he’s conducted himself over the past three years, and it becomes just minor blemish.

Hammer meets nail ^^^.
I almost feel bad for the kid, sounds like he’s not having much fun :’(
One day you’re Big Man on campus surrounded by smiles, the next you’re expected to fill Brett Favre’s shoes on Monday night against what I believe will be the best D in the NFL. Yikes.
I hope somebody can calm him down, for some reason I find myself hoping he succeeds. Pressure breaks all things, and a bad start to the ‘08 season after such a fairy tale run at the Super Bowl last year could be disastrous for Rogers. Good luck with that…

Firestorm? What firestorm? I live in Wisconsin and have seen nothing of the sort. The Packers are Aaron Rodgers’ team.
So some people are trying to induce failure by bringing pressure any way they can. Aaron will soon learn to stop talking to these peabrains. That includes a certain Vikings fan who writes for the rag that is SI.
Once again, THEY ARE STIRRING AN EMPTY POT!!!!!!
GO PACK! GO AARON!

I’d say a good 80 to 90% of the Green Bay Fans are excited about Rodgers being the new quarterback and the new era. It’s the other 20 or 10% that gives him this perception that we want him to fail or think he’ll fail or whatever.
Personally, I think Rodgers might win 2 Superbowls before his time is up. To me, the Cowboys roster looks like it could fall apart at any given time, so I doubt if the Cowboys are highly competitive 3 or 4 years from now.
Meanwhile, I KNOW this Green Bay team will be just awesome 3 or 4 years from now, not to mention, they’ll have 3 young quarterbacks to plug into the highly successful system McCarthy is running.

Sounds like he’s not having fun, where did you hear the audio? Words can mean different things depending on how they are said.
He is 3 years removed from campus, so I bet he has already dealt with not being big man on campus.
Furthermore what makes you think he is about to have a mental breakdown (my words, not yours but it fits).
A fairy tale run, yeah okay. Unexpected run, yes. But not fairy tale. Who played worldly above their talent level, or what big breaks did they get that make you shake your head in disbelief.

I also wonder what the “Firestorm” in Packerland really looks like. But I also was shocked that Rodgers would say what he did. Football PR 101 states that “when taking a job from someone so well loved, DO NOT INSULT THE FANS!” Especially by saying that they need to either accept you, or shut up! Come on! You need to earn their trust as a QB, not insult them.

What do the Cowboys have to do with the Packers, besides beating them by double digits with three different QBs in like 12 of the last 14 matchups? Packer fans should worry about their team winning their division before they worry about the Packer-stomping Dallas Cowboys.

Florio why are you trying to make this into something it is not? Rodgers comments were “an example of how he deals with pressure”? Come on.
Don’t tell us you and Madden are gonna be jockeying for the strongest lip lock on Farve’s keister.
Time for you (and whatever so called GB fans he offended) to face the reality that one of the great competitors of all time is Retired.

The Cowboys squeaked by GBP in November IN Dallas and that with the Packers losing Favre in the first quarter. They lost at home to the Giants. Romo is severely overrated. I would put him at the level of Mark Rypien or Jim Everett at best. It was waaaaay too easy for the Tuna to leave Dallas and no good football guy wants to work for Jerry Jones…I mean, really — Wade Phillips, Wade Wilson and Jason Garrett…let’s be real here. To the point about Green Bay’s quarterback situation, I will miss Favre as much as any fan, but having Rogers, Brohm and Matt Flynn (despite the fact hes from LSU) makes the whole thing a bit easier to take.

He doesn’t sound like he’s having fun if he publicly says stuff like “the fans can either hop on my wagon or STFU!” That’s pressure talking, as Florio rationally pointed out in the opening post. Not many people think pressure is fun, so its not a big leap to say that Rogers doesn’t seem like he’s having much fun. Get it?
“what makes you think he is about to have a mental breakdown”
I never said that. However, we all saw what the pressure did to Vince Young: made him doubt his will to play. If Rogers is already making demands from fans, just think how badly he’ll react to negative press and possibly even home-crowd boos if the team starts poorly? He’s already feeling the heat before the first official snap, a bad sign to be sure.
“Who played worldly above their talent level, or what big breaks did they get that make you shake your head in disbelief.”
The GB offense was unexpectedly good last year due to the unforeseen emergence of Ryan Grant and the consistent big plays from the passing game. Brett Favre didn’t even get drafted in my fantasy league to start the season last year, most people thought he was used up (we were wrong).
If Grant suffers a sophomore slump and Rogers fails to deliver the timely deep balls, GB could be looking at a losing season a year removed from the NFC Championship game. Rogers obviously realizes this…

I can tell you right now. Since Rodgers has been a rookie i have gone to tons of pratices and games! Rodgers is known from younger gans as myself as someone that always turns down people for autographs! The last couple years he has blown off fans left and right that have asked him for a autograph!I have heard many fans bitch about him in the past about he doesnt interact with many fans at all! I know this for a fact as he has done this to me many time myself!

The only “Packer fans” not happy with the teams’ outlook with Rodgers at the healm are really just Favre fans, that would prefer to see the team fail w/o Favre. To those “fans”, I would use the exact words Rodgers used. We shouldn’t (and won’t) forget about #4, but we do need to move on, and Rodgers is doing what he needs to do to move on.

The only “firestorm” is the media doing their usual stunt of blowing things out of proportion. Add that to your weekly “Favre is going to play again” headline, and you are turning very Sportscenter-like PFT.
What did he say wrong? He’s concentrating on his job, not worrying about selling himself to fans, and tells those who bitch constantly to shut up. We have a super bowl caliber team and I couldn’t agree with AR more.
And to the cowboy fan… when was your last playoff win? … Rodgers would tell you to keep your mouth shut.

There are 2 ways of looking at the Aaron Rodgers comment: Ballsy comment by a supremely confident QB, or a dumbass comment by a guy that’s done nothing in the NFL and gotten hurt each of the 2 times he’s played more than a few snaps ???
Fact is, Rodgers IS a jerk in real life. I’ve seen him at, and heard from countless others that he is a jerk at public appearances and paid autograph sessions, and will only sign “AR” instead of his entire name, and is rude, and has the look of “I can’t wait to get the hell out of here” written all over his face. And that the ONLY reason he has been appearing at free Green Bay Packers sanctioned autograph sessions (such as Packers Fan Fest) is an “attempt” to warm-up to the fans. And that it’s an image “makeover” if you will, by his agent. Believe me, Rodgers has never been considered “fan friendly” in Green Bay, until Favre annouced he’s retiring.
Obviously as a life-long Packer fan I hope he succeeds tremendously, but at this point he has accomplished … nothing. He’s replacing a legend who never missed a game in 16 years and has all the passing records. Thus far, Rodgers has played twice … and gotten hurt twice. Any Packer fan that says he’s not at least a little “concerned” over Rodgers’ health, is lying to themselves.
That said, I think Rodgers will be alright at QB for The Pack - IF he stays healthy. But the injury thing scares the hell out of me. Then we only have 2 Rookies as backups. Yikes.

i’m fairly sure packers fans will take that sort of comment from Rodgers over all the BS about favre coming back at this point.
packers fans can be won over very easily, actually.
flashback a few seasons and people in the lambeau stands were waving signs that said “In Gado We Trust;”
What we DON’T like: clamoring from anyone, even our HOF quarterback, about needing to pick up high-priced free agents, etc. How wrong was brett about that one? Randy Moss wouldn’t have put the team over the top last year, that’s safe to say.
