Former Lions running back Kevin Jones is trying to get back into the league. And he could end up landing with a team that, on the surface, would seem to not really need his services.
Per Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Jones is seriously considering signing with Tampa.
But why in the hell would Jones be doing that? The Bucs just signed Earnest Graham to a three-year extension, and Warrick Dunn is back after a six-year detour to Atlanta.
Jones would have a hard time winning one of the top two spots on the depth chart in Tampa, and his chances of being one of the first two options would be much greater elsewhere.

Hey give him a break, thats clearly what he wants, a break from playing but to keep collecting a paycheck, dont see any other reason why a team with three talented backs would be his top choice.

Maybe they want to see if Kevin Jones can play quarterback.

Hmmm… so much for a Cadillac come-back this year.

When healthy he is a solid back. He needs to be a part of a 2 back system. He would be a nice fit in Denver, Houston, or KC.

The 3rd RB? Dunn is done, and Graham remains unproven.
So I ask why wouldn’t he sign there?

Jones has almost no chance making any team this season. Instead of “seriously considering” signing, he should jump the F on any offer he gets.

You’re right, I don’t think Jones has a chance of breaking into the top two spots, but he’d be a very inexpensive (almost free) third RB, a spot he would almost certainly beat Bennett for, and may not even have to compete with Williams for.

I hope he gets a job, but not there. There would be a good chance of him getting cut after the end of the preseason. They have 3 backs already that are going to make the cut. I think he should go to the Bears. Hell if Duece can’t come back we should sign him.

Maybe he likes the area, the coaches, or is friends with some of the players on the Bucs. Who knows? If I was him, I think I’d take the best money deal I could due to the injury background etc. Get the money while you can, because you’re not gonna come back from another serious injury and be taken seriously in this league.

How about because Earnest Graham isn’t all that special, and Warrick Dunn is old with back problems…that good enough reasoning?

Maybe he thinks he can revive his career like post-Cards Thomas Jones.

Jones doesn’t love the game of football. Anyone who has followed his career since high school is aware of this. As long as he gets his money, he doesn’t really care. If he says he wants to start somewhere, it is only because starting gigs pay more and because that’s what a RB is supposed to say.

In other news, the Bucs had to cut all but their starting offensive line to make room for more skill position players.

Generate some sort of “game” tape with the bucs during camp.
Get cut or traded.
Better chance to land with another team with actual recent game film.
Also, get slightly paid, which beats getting not paid.
