Running back Kevin Jones, a one-time first-rounder who was cut earlier this year by the Detroit Lions, conducted a pre-draft-style workout on Saturday to show that he still has it.
If he does, only four teams were there to witness it.
Per the AP, the Dolphins, Packers, Steelers, and, well, the Lions sent representatives to view what Jones can do.
The Browns also reportedly called to ask for a video of the session.
Jones previously visited with the Patriots.
The problem is that, unless Jones lands with a team where he will be one of the top two tailbacks, he’ll occupy a slot on the depth chart that ordinarily entails playing special teams.

Millen is waiting for one of the other teams to pick him up so he can trade for him. How shrewd…

poor guy. How can so many lions players fall from grace this often. Couldn’t be the main office personel or the scouts, no no. Aaaaalllll those players must have something wrong with them. that many first rounders don’t just flop like that.
lol.

Steelers just cut Dump Truck Davenport, but they took a look at Kevin Jones??? They have Parker, Mendenhall drafted #1, signed Mewelde Moore, Gary Russell, and Carey Davis (RB/FB). How about picking up a pass-rushing D-lineman, instead?

I can’t see why the Browns wouldn’t be interested in Jones as a number two tailback. I know that they are infatuated with Jason Wright, but Jones is head and shoulders better.

Perhaps the major problem for Jones is the timing. He may be perfectly healthy, but I don’t see a lot of teams that are likely to think that they have sufficient need for another running back (though few likely do whether they think so or not) to take a chance with him. So, at this point, Jones needs to find a way to prove that he’s significantly better than the backfield that some team already has on its roster. Otherwise, unless someone gets hurt in camp, he might well remain on the outside looking in for quite awhile.

I hope that The Browns sign him. We could use some depth in that area, Harrison is nearing the make or break part of his career, which hasn’t been a career so far!
Bring Jones to Cleveland I say!

With Willie Parker and Mendenhall on deck, Tomlin could only be looking at him for special teams. And that’s the Steelers weakest link.

How long will Detroit let Matt Millen look and act like a complete idiot? He is Al Davis, the later years. Any person working any job, flipping burgers (which I have done), washing dishes (that too), to running a multi-million dollar business (which I haven’t done), would have lost his job a long time ago. What does Millen have? Pictures of William Clay Ford driving a Toyota?

Only 4 teams? That’s more than “little interest”. He also visited the Pats and the Browns are also interested.
JTaylor didn’t get ANY team interested in him.

It bugs me that Adam Pacman Jones get’s traded for, while a talent such as Kevin Jones can’t even land a spot on the cheap side of free agency.
The NFL is starting to neglect the good players out there, and the fact Kevin Jones worked out of his own accord shows he wants it and is willing to prove it.
Just a shame that it’s the timing that will hurt him. With teams working their pre-June FA’s and their rookie running backs, it’ll be awhile before Jones’ services will be called upon, maybe as late as mid season.

Yeah, I am thinking that the Browns should definitely pursue him with an incentive-laden deal. Now that Jamaal Lewis got the big money he wanted, he might not be as hungy. I think KJones would be a great insurance policy to protect them in case that happens. And, even if Jamaal does keep steamrollin’, KJ would be a great compliment to him with his running style. The 2 guys behind Jamaal might be good but, they are definitely inexperienced and unproven.

The best spot for Jones is in New England. Maroney and Morris are both injury prone and while I do expect Maroney to have a breakout year in ‘08 the fact remains that in his first two yrs in the laugue he has yet to play a full 16 game reg. season. I can’t remember the last time Morris played a full 16 games and it’s my opinion that his role will be short yardage and goalline in ‘08. In the Pats offense Jones does not have to be the workhorse, which will also allow him the opportunity to showcase other strong parts of his game, receiving and blitz pick up. No I did not forget about Kevin Faulk, he is strictly a 3rd down back. With the Patriots only keeping Evans as a FB, they do have room for Jones - even if he doesn’t play ST’s.

I really, really wish that the Packers would get Jones in for a workout. Hopefully, he would impress the staff enough to offer him a contract. Plus it would send Ryan Grant a message that 8 or 9 good games does not make you a superstar in this league and does not entitle you to top RB kind of money. He’s really started to piss me off with his attitude, plus he has no leverage whatsoever. Let’s see what your production over the first half of the season is and then we’ll start talking about contract extension.
Howevah, the problem lurking in the bottom of the woodpile is none other than Ted “Cheapskate” Thompson, the cheapest GM in the whole league. I don’t understand what makes this guy tick, but his whole attitude is such that why would a potential free agent even want to consider signing with the Packers. He’s got a lot of cap money to work with, but he continues to act like we’re tight up against cap.

shackman, grant is not holding out for top running back money. he is 25 and the next deal he signs is likely his last. as long as something gets done before trainig camp we have no problems. kevin jones is not gunna be a packer unless we have someone go down before the season starts. why sign a RB that is coming off an injury when we already have two of those….

He cant stay healthy. And he probably wants too much $$$.
Too bad, actually. He got squoze out of here (Daytwa) over the cap (and his lack of health, I presume); he can be productive.
i think this episode also points to… high end rooks ge paid too much $, RBs are fungible and injury prone and no team can get by without a little depth at RB.
Except Daytwa, it will continue performing at or near its current level with or without Jones.

What does it say that Lions sent someone to look at him. Wouldn’t they know what they had in him before they let him go. Maybe not.
@Shackman
It is not like the Packers are the only team to have cap space. Plus Ted Thompson has spent some money on FA. Plus you bring up a good reason as to why Grant shouldn’t be paid but then you rip him. Should Jones, if he is fully healthy, be able to demand a high money contract? I don’t think so.
It is funny that people rip some of the big money contracts that overpaid players but then rip the people that refuse to pay that type of money. It can’t be both ways. Plus since the Packers are not lacking in talent, what the problem.
