After more than a year of exile from the NFL, kicker Mike Vanderjagt made a triumphant return to Toronto, as the kicker and punter of the Argonauts.
And, in his regular-season debut, Vanderjagt missed his first three field goals.
He was wide left on a 32-yarder in the second quarter, wide right on a 39-yarder later in the period, and wide left on a 51-yard try in the fourth quarter, according to the play-by-play we tracked down via the CFL’s official web site.
But he redeemed himself, making two late field goals that allowed his team to expand a one-point lead to a seven-point bulge in the last two minutes of the game.
He did well as a punter, something he didn’t do on a regular basis (if ever) in the NFL.
Other NFL rejects made contributions for the Argos as well. Receiver Bethel Johnson caught two passes for 25 yards; a 47-yard gain was wiped out due to a penalty. Defensive back Willie Middlebrooks had nine tackles. Quarterback Michael Bishop came off the bench to complete six passes for 114 yards and a touchdown.
And receiver David Boston, whose availability to play this season the team considered to be doubtful due to a foot injury, caught one pass for four yards.

He can return to the NFL as a punter, and Manning can call him an “idiot punter”

I will never forget the look he shot Cowher as he called time out. As if to say “You don’t ice me”. How’d that game end again?

This just in….Matt Millen is pissed he did not sign David Boston. In fact, after the game, Millen was allegedly spotted in the tunnel calling Boston, well,…
Thanks again Florio. Thanks a lot.

How about NFL pro bowlers play a game against CFL all-stars? This would be a classic matchup of current NFL stars and Trivial Pursuit “Where are they now?” has-been NFL players.

So his team won, he was 2-5 in FG and punted and cemented the win. Vandy did okay then.

Pay attention, rookies!

Probably got to his head that he was so accurate he didn’t have to try anymore. Happens to plenty of post “dynasty” teams.

Nothing wrong with Vanderjagt other than more than 1 year layoff. It will take time, but he’s still a good kicker.
He got a raw deal with Indy and Manning. First off, if Manning had been half as good as he thought he was, a kicker would NOT have had to be the position Vandy was put in. Second, Vandy was RIGHT to question whether Peyton was really providing the right leadership. YOu’d have to say that how Manning works now is completely different than then; and that the ‘new’ Manning leadership style was a direct reason why the Colts did win a Super Bowl. Third, when Manning threw him under the bus (the ‘liquored up’ remark), it sure looked like he got blacklisted and blackguarded by everyone.

“He missed it.”
-The collective words of everyone at the RCA Dome and all those watching CBS on January 15, 2006
Ah yes, I’ll never forget the face he made when he sliced it 40 yards wide wide right and slammed his helmet on the field. It was a great day. One of the best games I have ever witnessed.
