Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports recently reported that Raiders owner Al Davis has privately expressed regret over the moves that the team has made during the offseason.
Cole cites three unnamed sources who have had conversations with Davis over the past two months.
Raiders public relations director Mike Taylor reacted sharply to inquiries from Cole on this point, and refused to ask Davis for a reaction.
“You obviously don’t know Al Davis,” Taylor told Cole. “Self-doubt is not part of the equation with Al Davis. I’m not going to justify this tripe, this drivel by even asking [Davis] for his response. It’s ludicrous, it’s insane, it’s rumor-mongering and it’s irresponsible journalism.
“The fact is, we’re very excited about what we’ve done here this offseason and looking forward to a great year. We’ve signed or traded for three of the top players at their position and picked up two of the top players in the draft the past two years.”
We, frankly, agree with Taylor; we can’t imagine Davis allowing himself to doubt the moves that the team has made. Do we agree with the moves, and the money paid to the players? Nope. But we simply don’t think that Al Davis would: (1) make such a confession to himself; or (2) make such a confession to anyone else.
Cole also tries to connect the dots between the talk of Davis doubting his move and recent reports of talks with former Packers V.P. of player finance Andrew Brandt about a job with the team. The thinking apparently is that Davis was hiring Brandt, who was bean counter in Green Bay, to come in and take over some of the personnel function.
Earlier this month, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that the Raiders were close to hiring Brandt. We heard at the time (but never got around to writing, frankly) that Brandt wasn’t even on the team’s radar screen. The thinking in some circles is that Brandt and/or his agent was trying to create a market for his services by puffing with respect to a potential gig in Oakland. (See Samir Sulemain.)
Cole, citing two unnamed sources, reports that Brandt actually turned down a gig with the Raiders, offering instead to work as a consultant.
And that makes no sense to us. Though Brandt tried hard to create the impression when he left the Packers that he was leaving on his own terms to pursue other challenges, presumably in other industries, word on the street is that Brandt was pushed out of Green Bay. So why would he want to be a consultant and not an employee of the Raiders?
Coles does good work and in this case he cites multiple sources and does all the other things that a journalist should do. We just happen not to buy any of it.

“It’s ludicrous, it’s insane, it’s rumor-mongering and it’s irresponsible journalism.”
The last time I heard the Raiders PR folks say that, it was just after Schefter had reported Art Shell was getting “fired into the front office”. The report true then, & with all the $$ they’ve spent on junk this offseason, I bet it’s true now.

Let’s see, he signs Javon Walker for twice his real worth and Javon promptly gets pounded to a pulp. He drafts Russel #1 in the draft and the jury is out on whether the guy is even half way decent, just $30 million down the drain. Then he signs Tommy Kelly to a $50 million dollar deal and the guy is coming off ACL surgery on his knee and there is doubt that he will even be half the player he once was and he was nowhere near $50 million’s worth before the knee went out.
If Al Davis doesn’t have second thoughts about that, he is crazy. I personally think he is crazy but you can’t take away his team for odd bbehavior. What’s next, if they took away NFL teams for being an a$$hole or for moral bankruptcy, Jerry Jones and Bob Kraft are screwed.

1st Bill Parcells and now Mike Taylor are accusing Jason Cole of irresponsible journalism. IMO Jason Cole was (key word “WAS”) a decent journalist when he wrote for the Miami Herald, Now that he is in the national media, he tends to use “unnamed” sources just a little too much and I would tend to agree that his journalistic prowess is a little irresponsible.

WA-HEY-YAY too much of an ego on him to ‘admit’ those things to people.
AND WWAAYY too early for him to think those things if @one time he (must’ve) thought they were good enough ideas to go through with.
AND dont feed me a line about how he’s not the gm or cap-manager b/c he still signs off on this stuff before the team goes through with it. Florio i cant blame ya for thinking this report is a pile of **** b/c it reeks of bs.

Well this all makes sense now… Florio has to be a raiders fan… He goes out of his way to find anything and everything to rip on Denver for and yet feels the need to squash somebody elses rumor about Oakland.

I had three media sources tell me this week that Jason Cole is lazy and uses controversy to draw hits on his second rate articles.
The Raiders are easy targets because they work behind closed doors. This lack of media access often leads to conjecture and sometimes, downright lies.
I hope that Cole is only guilty of the former. However, from judging his total body of work on the Raiders, I afraid it is also the latter.

Al is a proven nut. Given.
Last year he had issues signing JaMarcus and basically paid him more than 95% of the league for squat. He sells off part of the team and gets the raw capital to sign this year’s high draft pick and bring in free agents. If Al Davis doesn’t second-guess what he looks like when he leaves the house in the morning, I can’t see how these reports make sense. With the money he threw around he coulda gotten anyone he targeted in FA. You’d think he felt confident he was getting the right guys to improve the team this season. To say this openly, especially NOW, makes no sense. He would have to have known this would make him come across bad.
If he’s got buyer’s remorse over the price tag on some of these new guys, I get that, but he’s the one that hires these people to negotiate for him. If he’s pissed about the Javon Walker fiasco, he should be, but he knew what he was getting when he signed him. If he only now sees his depth chart at RB (which is pretty sick) and maybe thinks he should’ve taken Glenn Dorsey instead, I can see that. But they had plenty of time to prepare for the draft and should feel great about their pick regardless.
It’s so easy to believe this report (except that it came from Yahoo!) because Al Davis is who he is, but unless Adam Schefter corroborates, I’m not buying.

If Al Davis is questioning his moves, it would be the smartest thing he has done this offseason. I haven’t seen a team make so many bad decisions in a single offseason in a long, long time.
Seriously, why is Tommy Kelly one of the highest paid defensive players in the NFL when most casual NFL fans had never heard of the guy until he got that ludicrious deal?

I think Alzheimers Al messed up when giving big money to a career backup(kelly) when he couldve drafted Glen Dorsey or Sed Ellis instead of getting McFadden when that was their best filled position anyway. Plus signing a decent reciever(Walker) to AllPro money was also pathetic.

What you have here Mike is another case of the media taking a fabricated potshot at old Al. From Kiffin’s mystery letter to JRuss’s weight, the media has it out for the Raiders and it makes me laugh at the little school girl attitudes these “professionals” have. The Raiders are one of the worst news beats because they don’t share everything/much with these hacks. This irritates little reporterperson. There is also a culture of hating all things S&B that is condoned in the media. It most likely dates back to the move to LA and the lawsuits. Most of today’s mediots don’t even know why they hate us, they just parrot BS about Al and his “embarrassing/disfunctional/bizarre” franchise. They said the same shiite in 1997. Then we rebounded. All I can say is stfo the bandwagon when things turn around, and don’t forget to give the old man some credit when things do get better.

So lets see here…. If the “sources” of so many in the media were actually correct about anything when it came to the Raiders this offseason - Kiffin would no longer be coach, Russell would weigh over 300 pounds, the Raiders wouldnt have lured any FA’s this offseason, Rob Ryan would be with the Jets, and Vernon Ghloston would be a Raider and McFadden a Jet.
I think that pretty much summerizes how well the media’s “sources” have done when trying to speak on about the Raiders.
