Gruden and Dungy would both be coordinators but neither is a great head coach. Dungy could never get over the hump because he was to Defense oriented. Gruden took Dungys defense and tweaked the offense just enough to put them over the top. Dungy would never have one the SB without Tom Moore. He took the Colts defense and tweaked it just enough to put them over the top.

No one respected the bucs the way teams do now until Gruden took over.
No disrespect to dungy and his coaching staff at that time but Gruden won the big game.

He chose the roster to enter the 02 season He chose the offensive plays at the critical time in the playoff NOT dungy.

Both coaches are great but my bucs coach is Gruden NOW and enough talking about history.

What would you all say about gruden if he wins the NFC or the SB this year?

Shout out to irishpat! (Stole my thunder)

I'm a HUGE Buc FAN, but.....

What if Gruden never leaves Oakland? We can safely assume that the Radiers would have still been in Superbowl XXXVII (Since "His" team and "His Offense" made it there without him). But we can't honestly make that same assumption about the Bucs. Chances are we would have gotten thumped in Philly (YET AGAIN!).

If you ever heard many of the defensive players talk about the superbowl, they said that the Raiders never changed any of their formations, signals (thanks patties) or plays and Tampa knew what was coming from the get go. How soon Tampa fans forget that they sucked for years until Dungy came. Now they act as though they were always good and just needed a new head coach. Dungy a defensive coach? Do you know his background? Did you watch him play in the big ten? He just happen to have some great players that played his system. I'm surprised Florio even printed this. He has such hatred for Dungy, the colts and anyone that believes in God.

JagRoar says:

GeauxSaints12:

Sapp likes Dungy but doesn’t like Chucky and Kiffin. He gives credit for the Bucs SB victory to Dungy and whines about Chucky and says he left TB because of Kiffin. Sapp clearly doesn’t like whites and he’s a big mouth racist and you give him a free pass because he’s black.

If Sapp was white and said those things about two black coaches, you’d be having PC hissy fits. It’s a true example of your delusional PC double-standard hypocrisy.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Quite possibly the most twisted post in internet history! It's so twisted, I don't get the point. Nor do I want to.

In the series "America's Game", which they had on NFL network, both Sapp and John Lynch basically said: hey, I love Tony Dungy, but we'd never have won that Superbowl without Gruden. He bought a change in attitude to the team that we needed at that point.

My Gosh! You guys are really QUICK to pull the RACE CARD on any issue aren't you? Hahaha. I didn't hear him say anything about black or white. Just about football.

There is such a double standard on this board. When a great player comes out and makes a statement like this why not just take it for what it is and stop trying to dissect it and make it something that it's not.

If/when John Lynch comes out and says the same thing it's going to tear this board up!

But you will believe it....GO FIGURE!

What a creative way to bring Madonna into the discussion. :) But actually, the postmadonna period has had *at least* as many narcissists as the premadonna - oh, wait - nevermind. I now realize that you cannot spell.

On another note - it's ironic how quickly the oft-maligned "race card" was pulled in this situation. How many of you who were so quick to reach for it in this case are full of contempt whenever you perceive black people doing this?

I suppose it was racial, then - when Sapp was critical of coach Dungy during his appearance in the 2002 Buccaneers episode of "America's Game". In that documentary, Sapp accused Dungy of neglecting the offense, and for being too subdued to inspire his players during "crunch time". He also praised Gruden for raising the standard of the offense and for having the right leadership style to get the team over the hump. I guess Sapp said this during a period in his life when he hated black people, and was in love with white people (maybe he even had a fetish for strawberry-blonde hair and freckles).

I understand Sapp's loyalty to Dungy, but Chucky is a fine coach too.

You know how they say it: "He can take his and beat yours, then take yours and beat his." That Buccaneers/Raiders Super Bowl is an example of that.

Kiffen is one of the best there is at D-Coordinator.

Loyalty is one thing, but Sapp needs to think and speak realistically...

Dungy seems like a good guy, but the Colts would not have won XLI without Peyton Manning.

Remember in the playoffs when it was 4th down and Dungy sent in the kicking unit, and Manning waved 'em back to the bench. They convert, they win the game, they move on to the Super Bowl.

Maybe they would've won anyway punting on 4th, but.....

Consider the source. After Rush Limbaugh was fired for saying McNabb was overrated because he was black, Sapp is on record saying (not in exactly these words, but something along these lines)"...we all know that if any quarterbacks are overrated, its the white QB's". I can't find a link but I am 100% sure of this. For some reason nobody called Sapp racist, or asked for him to be fired. Sapp also compared playing in the NFL to be a slave. Sapp obviously has motives for his latest jackass comments.

Sapp obviously has motives for his latest jackass comments.

To [underline] emphasize what Bubba M said, it was the fans mostly screaming for an offense instead of a conservative/no offense that Dungy ran that forced the Glazers hand.

I will agree with the point that Dungy was/is an excellent individual. He couldn't win in Tampa with "Dungy's team". In fact, he had arguably the best team in the NFL for several years before he finally won with the Colts. His defense really took their game to a =higher level.
Period.
It's pretty lame that the Dungy azz kissers are still at it 6 years later, imo. But why the need to rewrite history. The core of that great D was brought in by Wyche and Gruden bought at least 6 new starters on offense.
If you miss Dungy that bad, do us all a favor and move to Indy.
As for Sapp, he is infested with liver flukes and gall stones. A high coffee enema would do him some good. smile*

Dungy's suicided son had an awfully racist myspace page.

Saint Dungy should not get a pass. If he approved of what his son posted, then he is a liar. If he didnt, he was gutless and didnt do jack about it. If he didnt know then he is an ignoramus.

Of course Sapp can be a racist. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron. There is no loaw or stipulation that should exempt anyone from being called "racist", although it is a goofball marxist term designed to silence certain people. I personally dont care if people are or arent. But since most interracial crime and most inflammatory statements actually are black-on-white, then all the one sided accusations are simply hollow.

First things first: Tony Dungy is one of my favorite people in all of sports. If more coaches and athletes had his class and dignity, being a fan would be so much more enjoyable.

Having said that, I have a question for the folks who say that Gruden won with Dungy's team: Why could't DUNGY win with Dungy's team?

Dungy had numerous chances to get the job done, but he failed to put together a decent offense. Any suggestion that the Bucs would have won it all had he not been fired is pure speculation. End of story.

Oh, and GeauxSaints12, judging by your asinine comments about race and politics, you must have been one of those New Orleans residents who sat on their butts and waited for "da gubmint" to rescue them when Katrina hit town. Loser.

I think most people acknowledge Tony Dungy's worthiness based on his amazing success in Tampa Bay, and if there were skeptics, he certainly proved himself in Indianapolis. I don't know, though, if Warren Sapp should be trashing Jon Gruden and Monte Kiffen.

Yes ,Dungy is responsible fo building the Bucs, however he couldnt take them to the next level.

The Bucs needed some new blood and thats where Gruden came in.

Similar situations in San Diego and Dallas.

Sapp =sour grapes

Also, Sapp can kiss the broadcasting career goodbye.

Sapp is Black Imus! lolol

Do not hire this guy for TV! He's got a bloated liver, amongst other things.

This site kills me.

If Sapp gets on TV, more than a few ( white, yellow and purple) guys will stop following the nfl. Good bye big contracts.

Gruden won with the team Dungy couldn't even score a TD with.
Gruden added 20 some players and kicked there azzez and the team performed and zoomed thru the playoffs and SB.

Jon Gruden is a strong personality and a sharp football mind, but he’s only an above-average football coach. He was immensely responsible for both the Raiders ascent, and the Bucs desecent… in my humble opinion.

Rich McKay is responsible for the Bucs descent by handing immense contracts (as he has gone onto do in Atlanta) to Booger McFarland, Simeon Rice and Martin Gramatica amongst others

The funny thing is that Warren says almost the exact opposite thing in the NFL Films Greatest Games video about the Bucs Superbowl victory. I wish I had the transcript but he basically said had it not been for Gruden's a**-kicking style that they wouldn't have won because a kick in the a** is exactly what they needed after years of Dungys coddling.

The Bucs under Dungy always came up so small in the playoffs. The Bucs had the most talent in the NFC for years. By the time Gruden got there they were getting old. They didn't many shots left. Gruden got it done, Dungy didn't, plain and simple! The only reason Dungy won in Indy was because Manning is a coach on the field. He doesn't with any other team.

Sapp's still pissed off because Kiffin and Marinelli had a choice to either sign McFarland or Sapp to a contract extension after the Super Bowl and with McFarland being younger and was drafted to replace Sapp the Bucs chose to let go of Sapp and resign McFarland. If anyone watched any of the Bucs games after the Bucs Super Bowl win would be shocked to see that Sapp couldn't stop the run anymore was pushed back 2-3 yards almost every run play and couldn't get any consistent pass rush.

How can any say that Gruden didn't win that Super Bowl when 28 out 60 players that played at least one game for the team during the 2002 season were players brought in by Gruden. These are the players that Gruden brought in 2002. Six new offensive starters. Eight new starters total. The Bucs would have never won the Super Bowl without McCardell (two TDs in Super Bowl) , Jerevicius (catalyst for first TD drive with Long reception in Eagles championship game), Dilger (1 TD Super Bowl) , Pittman (100+ yards in Super Bowl)

Derrick Brooks (Defensive MVP 2002) '95, Warren Sapp '95, John Lynch '93 were here before Dungy got there. All under Sam Wyche.

We can't forget that Dungy could never beat the Eagles.

Since race is so important to some of you; "STOP WATCHING SPORTS".

The thing that always ticked me off, was Gruden got the credit for getting the Bucs AND the Raiders to that Superbowl. My point has been, if Gruden gets the credit for getting Dungy's former team there, then why didn't Bill Callahan get the credit for getting Gruden's former team there. Hmmm?

My point has been, if Gruden gets the credit for getting Dungy’s former team there, then why didn’t Bill Callahan get the credit for getting Gruden’s former team there. Hmmm?

There was 23 new players on that Super Bowl team including a few starters on Offense.

Pure Florio "Fluff". The article did not state what you implied in the header.
I swear if I wasn't so bored waiting for the season to start I would stop reading Florio's fact bending fish wrap.

The credit for Dungy's one SB comes courtesy of Peyton Manning.

I think Tony Dungy is a very likable guy and a person of extremely high character but the truth is that he is just an average coach.

How will history remember him if the "future greatest QB of all time" never gets a 2nd SB? People remember Landry, Noll, Walsh, and Shula but how many people, other than hometown fans, remember too many other than the QB of those teams? When I think of those teams, I think of their coaches. When I think of Indy's SB win, I think of Manning.

A man you'd be proud to have your son grow up to be like but let's be realistic about his coaching ability.

Gruden won with Dungy's players and everyone knows it, but remember the team Gruden faced in the superbowl was Gruden's players (The Raiders). Now loook at their organization after he left. Dungy won his superbowl so, now we know he can do it. As soon as Gruden wins a superbowl with his guys, there will no longer be a comparison.

Sapp's description of his relationship with Monte Kiffin being "stepfather & stepson" is all the more amusing in light of his retirement after 1 year of playing for Kiffin's real son.

"What next? Rich Gannon coming out and saying Bill Callahan doesn’t deserve all the credit for bringing the Raiders to that same Super Bowl?"
Gannon is on record blasting Callie for changing the Raider offense in 2003 from the 1 that Gruden left behind. Callie believed that the Bucs had exposed the weaknesses of the "East Bay offense" for all to see. Gannon believes it still had legs at the time.

I liked the comment about Sapp hating white people as it was just as relevant as the piece. As for assigning credit, it is a subjective exercise. Objectively, I can say that no one could have picked apart the Raiders offence like Gruden did in that superbowl (which, in and of itself, proved the value of knowing the other team's plays) and that few defensive coordinators have been as good as long as Kiffen.

Hey MDS,

Sapp has always been a guy with a thoughtful streak that I respect, and a tendency to be bluntly honest when it's not always necessary to do so, which I question.

When you just got out of the league, is that the time to tell tales, diss this one and say this and that about the next one the stuff you always wanted to tell them? I don't beleive it is.

"You got your Super Bowl Ring in Tampa, Warren. You went to pasture out in Oakland. Now that it's all said and done, make kissy kissy and nicey nicey with Jonny and Monte and Tony and everybody. You're going to the Hall Of Fame..."

That's how I see it MDS. Wonder what you guys think of Warren today?

Not to mention the fact that Gruden's playoff run went up against his former teams in Philly and Oakland. Makes it kind of easy when know all the other teams tendancies that you used to coach. Dungy didn't have that advantage. Remember before the Super Bowl Gruden had Gannon's cadance(sic) down to a T. I think that aspect is over looked often.

sure looks like a bias toward the dusky saint cant-crest-the-hump dungy and against the foul-mouthed yet immediately effective caucasian.

and dungy continued his cant-win-the-big-one string for quite a while after leaving tampa for a more talented team...

oakland was a dream matchup for tampa, however. gruden was able to tell the defense exactly what to expect. and oh was he right.

Dungy did the heavy lifting, but could not put the weight above his head. Gruden could and did. /the end.

I have believed this for a long time: "Of course, you could also make the case that a big part of the cake was in the oven even before Dungy got there, considering that defensive stalwarts like Sapp, Derrick Brooks and John Lynch were drafted when Sam Wyche was the Bucs’ coach."

I think Sapp is completely forgetting about the way Gruden played Rich Gannon to a tee in practice and prepped that defense for EXACTLY what they would see vs. the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. Warren, you can't tell me that Dungy would have prepared you for that game the same way Chucky did. Read this:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1208/is_5_227/ai_97174288

***(excerpt)***
So how did it get to the point where Bucs defensive lineman Warren Sapp was dancing in the locker room wearing nothing but a jock strap and the smile of a champion? Preparation.

The Bucs were so well prepared for one Raiders play that safety John Lynch called it before it happened. The result was Dexter Jackson's second interception of the game. "I was in the slot with (Jerry) Porter one-on-one, so I told Dexter cover me, and he did," Lynch said. "I ended up coming off on the smash, but Dexter got over there."

The Raiders' formation and their situation tipped Lynch, who had seen the exact same play from the exact same formation in a similar situation in practice earlier in the week. "We were so well prepared today," Lynch said. "It's uncanny how the plays we ran in practice showed up, same formation, same motion."

The result was Dexter Jackson’s second interception of the game. “I was in the slot with (Jerry) Porter one-on-one, so I told Dexter cover me, and he did,” Lynch said. “I ended up coming off on the smash, but Dexter got over there.”

The Raiders’ formation and their situation tipped Lynch, who had seen the exact same play from the exact same formation in a similar situation in practice earlier in the week. “We were so well prepared today,” Lynch said. “It’s uncanny how the plays we ran in practice showed up, same formation, same motion.”

BlabberMouth Sapp likes Dungy better than Chucky...what a surprise. I bet he's going to vote for Obama too. You don't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to figure out why.

Dungy is a defensive coach as Gruden is offensive (no pun intended).

Dungy and Monte Kiffen set up the Tampa 2 Defense and Gruden came along and added a respectable offense that could score more points than the defense could hold the other team to.

Dungy left Tampa and took over the reigns in Indy. Dungy was presented with a team that was already very strong on offense, but needed much work on defense. Dungy built of the defense and got Peyton his ring.

If you argue that Gruden's trophy isn't rightfully his, then you must agree that Dungy's trophy isn't rightfully his as well, though Dungy was in control for several seasons before going to the big dance.

Gruden is 36-44 in Tampa since the Super Bowl year.

Take from that what you want.
