The Giants announced today that every season-ticket holder in their new stadium will have to purchase a personal seat license, costing between $1,000 and $20,000 depending on the seat.

Giants owner John Mara said in a statement released by the team that the seat licenses are necessary for the team to be able to afford the new stadium.
“Given construction costs and NFL and lender requirements for paying down our debt, and after much thought and analysis, we decided this PSL program is necessary,” Mara said.

The Giants and Jets will both move into the new stadium, which is currently under construction in New Jersey, for the 2010 season. The Jets recently sent a questionnaire to fans to gauge their thoughts about personal seat licenses and are expected to unveil their own seat license plan soon.

The new stadium will have a capacity of 82,500. A ballpark estimate is that each team might sell 75,000 seat licenses, at an average cost of $5,000, meaning seat licenses will raise about $750 million.
