The Giants announced today that every season-ticket holder in their new stadium will have to purchase a personal seat license, costing between $1,000 and $20,000 depending on the seat.
Giants owner John Mara said in a statement released by the team that the seat licenses are necessary for the team to be able to afford the new stadium.
“Given construction costs and NFL and lender requirements for paying down our debt, and after much thought and analysis, we decided this PSL program is necessary,” Mara said.
The Giants and Jets will both move into the new stadium, which is currently under construction in New Jersey, for the 2010 season. The Jets recently sent a questionnaire to fans to gauge their thoughts about personal seat licenses and are expected to unveil their own seat license plan soon.
The new stadium will have a capacity of 82,500. A ballpark estimate is that each team might sell 75,000 seat licenses, at an average cost of $5,000, meaning seat licenses will raise about $750 million.

I love football, so much in fact that I do pay for the NFL Ticket and have 4 or 5 games for viewing at the same time however it is time to stop this BS and paying for a PSL. These owners and the NFL are very wealthy and all they are doing is robbing from us. It is time for us to not allow it to happen anymore. No one should pay a PSL and have the seats go empty. The more you allow corporations to bully you the more they will.

Anyone paying for a PSL should have their freaking head examined! The Patriots paid for their state of the art stadium without any public funding, save some road infrastructure improvements that the state agreed to pay for, and did not charge a PSL.
Giant’s fans should tell Mara to take their PSL and shove it!

I cant figure out how such a thing could be allowed….unless they were engraving the persons name on the seat in gold. I have never heard of a more ridiculous charge. Its like everyones looking for more ways to hurt the consumers pocket nowadays when we are all finding it harder to make ends meet as it is.

Don’t PSL owners usually have the first shot at other events held in the stadium? Does this mean the Jet fireman guy has to sit in a Giant fan’s lap if they both want to go see Springsteen?
Aren’t PSLs in a 2 team stadium kind of like leasing one car to two people?

How is it that “small market” Indianapolis can buil a new stadium without PSL and TWO “big market” New York NFL franchises can’t? Looks like they’re not trying very hard to find another way.

This is total BS. As a season ticket holder, I will definitely have to give up my tickets as I cannot afford the shakedown. This is how the Giants thank loyal fans - by screwing them. They made such a big deal that they were funding the new stadium without outside assistance. Well now I see how they are funding this - on the backs of the loyal fans who cannot afford this ridiculous fee.

So now that many cities are standing up to the owners and refusing to pay for their stadiums with public financing, the owners are just going to screw the fans and get their public funding that way. These people are the definition of massive greed. The entire Giants and Jets fanbase should give up their season tix and see how the owners like that.

PSLs are good for season ticket holders Eagles SBLs that sold for $2500 are now worth between 10 and 25k. Also PSLs let you transfer seats to anyone you wish so you can leave them to family in a will or sell them for a profit. Either way if you buy them from the team you will make money on the investment.

“raise 750 million dollars”what did the stadium cost?
by the time they count all the money,it’ll only take
about 5 bucks out of pocket money to complete the
stadium.
all they did, giants and jets, was whine about how much
everything was going to cost, they’re not paying shit.

What Happens when the Jets play the Giants???
Well since there is about a 5 year (or some ridiculous length) waiting list for season tickets for the Jets…i don’t think they have to worry too much if some of the current season ticket holders don’t wish to pay…the next guy in line will surely fill in.
Too bad they’ll have to pay $5,000 extra to watch them lose to the Dolphins though…

This is insane.I am a Giant fan on the waiting list. This totally screws the people on the waiting list! Not to mention they can kiss my hairy backside if they think they will bilk a lump sum for the pleasure of sitting in their stadium. I am incredibly disappointed in the Giants……. They should have kept the old stadium at this point.

Wow. That’s mind boggling that in the middle of the biggest financial crisis in my lifetime, in a city where their primary customer base (the financial services market) is actually feeling pressure to keep their jobs, and as inflation is digging ever deeper into our pockets they think this is a good idea.
-laughs-
I really can’t see any normal person spending $4000 to $80,000 just for the privilege of buying a seat. Course I’ve been
Wrong before, but this time I think they’ve actually smited the goose

As a Giants fan that was on the season ticket waiting list for two decades, I can tell you they will sellout. A lot of money flows through New York (a 3 bedroom apt AVERAGES 1.7 million) and the guys from Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, etc. will fork over the 20Gs without blinking. They will then turn around and write it off on their taxes as a business expense (since they ONLY have the tixs so they can entertain clients). Which means, ultimately, we ALL get to pay for THEIR tickets. Sweet deal - if you’re rich. Sucks for the rest of us. As for the Jets, they’ll pay up because according to Jets fans every year is the year “we make it back to the Super Bowl”. If I had a buck for everytime a Jet fan said that, I could pay the 20 grand and have change left over.

I’m not as miffed as other Giants fans but mostly because this is sure to move me up the season ticket list. I’ve been on the list for 12 years and am still another 12 away from getting the season tix. Maybe some people will decide not to renew now.

hey florio, can you do a follow up to see how many other teams do these PSL’s? I’m a UF grad and a Phin fan; at UF, we don’t have PSL’s, but I wish they did because every year they require us to donate between $2500 to $10000 a year in order for fans to keep their season tickets. I cannot afford that, and that is why I’ve given up w/college game and consume my entire time watching and breathing the NFL. They only thing that donation does for UF season ticket holders is guarantee the right repurchase those same seats every year or donate them or will them. That is a ripoff! And it’s college football. I’m not saying that I like the idea of PSL’s, but what happens in 20 years when the Jets want to move to queens or something? Do those seat owners get their seats at the new stadium w/out paying a dime? or a new PSL?

The Rams have PSL’s and people lined up to pay. Last year the Ram’s were terrible, and people sold their tickets to opposing fans to recoup some of their money. Steven Jackson took exception and called out the fans, said they didn’t show loyalty. His contract is up next year, I wonder if he is going to show loyalty to fans. Good luck.
