Unemployed and generally unwanted by the NFL, quarterback Daunte Culpepper has still found a way to succeed in the game of football.
Specifically, Culpepper has established a Guinness World Record for most points scored in the Two-Minute Drill mini-game from Madden NFL ‘02, which coincidentally featured Culpepper on the cover.
Culpepper, playing as (as opposed to “with”) himself at quarterback and Randy Moss at receiver, racked up 14,500 points. Which we assume is a lot of points.
The record was set as part of EA’s 20th Anniversary Premiere Party for Madden NFL ‘09. Guinness is tracking various video-game records, in an apparent effort to regain some marginal relevance in the American culture.
The fact that the Madden franchise is climbing into bed with the Guinness folks in this regard is proof positive that the nearly 20-year-old football game franchise is dangerously close to donning a leather jacket and water skiing over a shark pit.
Frankly, the game itself has pretty much stunk the past few years on the “next generation” systems, and goofy gimmicks like this isn’t the way to breathe life back into the brand. Though this might sound like heresy, the folks at PFT headquarters (i.e., me) are waiting not for the Madden release day, but for the date on which NHL ‘09 will be unleashed.

I agree completely, instead of fixing the many bugs, errors and shortcomings of the Madden games, they have spend all their time and effort adding new useless game modes and features.
The Madden game series would be much better if they had focused on expanding and correcting the franchise game mode and properly tested and fixed the many smaller and larger bugs, game play issues and things that are just downright wrong.
I am a huge Madden football fan, but I find myself enjoying Madden 04 much more than any of the newer editions.

August 20, 2007 - “MADDEN FOR XBOX 360 IS UNREAL
Last week, we got a look-see at the new Madden game for the Wii and the regular Xbox. Tonight, yours truly took a break from updating the site to get his butt kicked by a 16-year-old nephew on the Xbox 360 version of the game.
But it was a pleasure to lose. The game is incredible. Absolutely incredible.
We ordinarily don’t like to pimp products that don’t pay for space on the site, but we have to give credit where it’s due. The game is incredible.
Besides, we figure it’s okay to give the game a plug because Sprint has a strong presence in every version of it — a wise move by the official ProFootballTalk telecommunications sponsor to align itself with a high-quality product.
UPDATE: A reader who was disappointed with the initial Madden offering on Xbox 360 has asked us to elaborate on what makes the new version so good — the game play or the graphics. For us, it’s both. Oh, and the intro segment made me ready to run into a wall, without pads on.”

I wrote this in response to a post back in August, the game truly is awful.
In a message to MJFlorio@aol.com dated 8/20/2007 11:27:26 PM Eastern Daylight Time, dafriedm@vt.edu writes:
Can you clarify what awesome is? Did you think the graphics were
especially well done or was it the game-play? The only reason I ask is
because I dropped $60 on madden 06 for the 360, and I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. I thought the game was approximately the same, in terms of game-play, to Madden 94 on Sega Genesis. The franchise mode was terrible as well. Even the coin flip is the same. I read the site, and I agree with most of what you say, even though you have that whole West Virginia thing going on. I just want to know if this game is worth my money. Does it have the same bells and whistles as the game for regular xbox, or is it just some upgraded rosters for Madden 94?
Florio’s response:
graphics and game play. excellent game.

Madden has sucked since they yanked the classic teams. In this day and age, with what is possible with these new systems, there is no excuse for restricting the game to the 32 current teams.

Madden has sucked since they dumped the classic teams. Why in the world would they do that? In this day and age, with what these systems are capable of, why would you trim the game down to the 32 current teams. That game was a lot more fun, and didn’t get old as fast when you could ride the ‘77 Broncos to dominance!!!

I’m almost positive this was the site that had a statement in parentheses about how great the Madden ‘08 game was for xbox 360. Anyone have time to dig through the archives?
I don’t blame you though, I thought it was great for a week or two as well. The new one does look like they have a new art direction going and some new physics…..yea yea we all heard this before.
I would just like to be onside kick without showing my opponent what I’m doing, some useful, or at least not completely stupid trick plays, and the ability to sub a receiver as a QB - you could this in 05 I think with Randle El and it was great.

I love Madden, but I got a few gripes. First off, they haven’t added anything slightly fun or useful for like the past 4 seasons. At least the NHL video game franchise ACTUALLY HAS COMPETITION. I can see drastic improvements each season pretty much because they have to. Madden for the Wii is an utter waste of time and thus I have to say Colinito is not a true video game fan. The NFL should stop exclusivly giving the rights to just EA. Free competition improves the quality. As for wamitchell, maybe you don’t watch Hockey, but you’re certaintly not everyone. Hockey is a pretty big sport elsewhere in the world and is still above soccer in the US. I would say it is easily my second or third favorite sport behind football. It’s close between baseball. I love the NHL games, they are a ton of fun.

Play Strat-O-Matic Football, it doesn’t have the glitz or graphics of Madden (actually it doesn’t have any glitz and has just X’s and O’s moving on the field) and there is no arcade mode but it has by far the most realistic strategy and realism of results – playing against the fairly competitive computer manager which is individually customized for every team (whether it’s in the most recent season or an older season as far back as 1957) or better yet when playing against someone live online.

Madden not fun? What, you mean you DON’T want to play as an o-linemen with the lead blocker feature? Or you want your favorite teams QB to suck becasue his “QB Vision Cone” isn’t big enough?

Madden is getting so lame that they aren’t even making a 2009 game for PC. It will thus be done by a website community, which will probably do a better job than EA would have.

This year’s Madden is sure to sell a boatload though. They could re-release a 10 year old version and it still will. When Favre was on the cover of SI for Sportsman of the Year there was an unprecedented 3rd printing of the issue. The folks at EA must figure that with Favre on the cover they can sell it, even if it is sub-par.

Madden’s sucked since 05…04 was the last time anything meaningful changed. I stopped playing after they refused to correct the “comeback A.I.” that kicks in whenever the computer is down. The only reason I would buy a next-gen console would be for madden, but they refuse to fix any of the errors in it, so I’m not going to bother.
