Unemployed and generally unwanted by the NFL, quarterback Daunte Culpepper has still found a way to succeed in the game of football.

Specifically, Culpepper has established a Guinness World Record for most points scored in the Two-Minute Drill mini-game from Madden NFL ‘02, which coincidentally featured Culpepper on the cover.

Culpepper, playing as (as opposed to “with”) himself at quarterback and Randy Moss at receiver, racked up 14,500 points.  Which we assume is a lot of points.

The record was set as part of EA’s 20th Anniversary Premiere Party for Madden NFL ‘09.  Guinness is tracking various video-game records, in an apparent effort to regain some marginal relevance in the American culture.

The fact that the Madden franchise is climbing into bed with the Guinness folks in this regard is proof positive that the nearly 20-year-old football game franchise is dangerously close to donning a leather jacket and water skiing over a shark pit.

Frankly, the game itself has pretty much stunk the past few years on the “next generation” systems, and goofy gimmicks like this isn’t the way to breathe life back into the brand.  Though this might sound like heresy, the folks at PFT headquarters (i.e., me) are waiting not for the Madden release day, but for the date on which NHL ‘09 will be unleashed.
