Last week, Albert Haynesworth’s agent said the defensive tackle is willing to sign his tender offer so long as the Titans agree not to franchise him again next year. Monday, the Titans indicated they are open to that idea.
General manager Mike Reinfeldt told The Tennessean that the Titans were considering honoring the request because it might help facilitate a long-term deal that would keep Haynesworth in town. “Albert wants to be in Tennessee and I think this would be his best place. So I think that’s why we have entertained (that option),” Reinfeldt said. “With the right situation we might consider it.’’
The right situation would likely include the same kind of performance incentives that the Bears included when they made a similar deal with Lance Briggs before last season. Briggs had to play 75 percent of the team’s snaps to assure that the Bears wouldn’t franchise him, something the Titans would surely want to include in any such deal with Haynesworth.
While Reinfeldt was part of Seattle’s front office, the team made a similar deal with Shaun Alexander and, like Briggs, it resulted in a long-term extension. They also franchised Walter Jones three straight years, however, so he’s clearly open to doing things either way.
