As we’ve noted before, Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith has given off indications several times that he’s not impressed with his young teammate Dwayne Jarrett.
There was the time Smith was asked about Jarrett’s performance and said only, “We’re all here to play football. That’s what we’re here to do.” There was the time Smith said of Jarrett, “You’re here to play football. You do the party scene at your own discretion, but on Sundays, we’re here to play football.” And there was the time Smith said to Jarrett, “Why don’t you go watch some film?”
But for Jarrett’s part, he insists that he and Smith get along just fine.
“We collided heads at times, but along the way he wanted the best for me,” Jarrett said Monday, per Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com. “We just had that miscommunication between us and we worked things out. There’s no bad blood between us. I’m here every day working hard just like he is and I’m just trying to learn from him.”
In fact, Jarrett even said that Smith has acknowledged privately that he wishes he hadn’t been so critical of Jarrett publicly.
“[H]e came to me and said some things he wished he could have handled better as far as things he said in the past and got out — that kind of conflict between us that it was made to look like in the paper,” Jarrett said.
Smith was clearly frustrated with the disaster that was the Panthers’ passing game last season, and he obviously thinks that he wouldn’t have faced so much double coverage if Jarrett would have played better. If Jarrett does play better in 2008, Smith will likely get off his case. But if Smith perceives that Jarrett isn’t pulling his weight, we’ll probably hear more harsh words directed at Jarrett.

Last time I checked Jarrett was just a rook last year. It’s pretty rare for a rookie wide receiver to step in and have an immediate impact. Give the kid a few years, and let him work with an actual quarterback.

Jarrett is just happy Smith didn’t sucker punch him while they were watching film.
Hmmmmm, maybe that’s why Smith wanted him in the film room so bad…..

“We collided heads at times”
I believe the term is butted heads. He makes it sound like he and Smith had open warfare with eachother.

IT’s good to hear that Jarrett seems to be taking the mature road here and stating the Smith only wants him to be the best football player he can be. It would be nice to see a USC receiver live up to his billing in the NFL for once. Jarrett has the hands and the size, though he seems a bit sssssssssssslow.

He just doesn’t realize that a rookie shouldn’t “collide heads” with a team leader, particularly not one that is an established star at the same position. You have to know your place on the team.

He was expected to start last year. But he didn’t read the playbook, and wasn’t in the film room very much. Just gave off the attitude that he didn’t care. That’s the reason for Smith’s “Get in the film room” comment.

Ummm….this rookie was expected to put up numbers last year.
After all, he reminded Keyshawn of himself. The morons in Carolina ousted KJ for this chump? At least KJ wants to play, wants the damn ball and will practice hard. I don’t know why Fox gets a chance again and again. He is Coach Kevlar 2.0. He should go ahead pack his stuff by week 9, Coach Chin and his ugly sweaters are coming to town.

I am not a Carolina fan, but I’d have to say Steve Smith is by far my favorite NFLer.
