The comments made by radio icon Don Imus on Monday regarding Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones have caught the attention of Rev. Al Sharpton, who led the charge to take down Imus in the wake of his comments regarding the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
“It has been reported to me that statements were made by Mr. Imus this morning and National Action Network has monitored his show since his return,” Sharpton said in a statement. “I find the inference of his remark disturbing because it plays into stereotypes. Any use of stereotypes is always counterproductive. We will determine in the next day or so whether or not his remark warrants direct action on our part as we did in April of last year.”
We’re not sure why Sharpton’s group needs to take a day or so to decide what to do, unless the question of whether it’s right or wrong to take action is determined based on whether it’s right or wrong with respect to the broader interests and agenda of Sharpton’s group.
Imus is expected to address the issue on Tuesday morning during his show, which means that someone outside of New York City might actually be listening to the show on Tuesday morning.
Based on an e-mail he sent to the New York Times, Imus is expected to explain that his comments were intended to reflect that Jones’ race made him a target for police attention. “I meant he was being picked on because he’s black,’’ Imus wrote.
Imus also told the Times that he’ll raise the issue with comedian Dick Gregory, an African-American, during Tuesday’s show. Gregory was already scheduled to appear on the show to discuss the passing of George Carlin. “We’ll see what [Gregory] thinks,’’ Imus told the Times. “I mean . . . come on!’’
No, Don, you come on. You don’t get the benefit of the doubt on this one. If you had a history of pointing out that police unfairly target black men for handcuffs, fingerprints, and mug shots, then your words would be assessed from that context. Your history instead suggests that you’ve had yet another slip of the tongue, and that you meant not that Jones has been arrested because the police like to arrest black men, but that he has been in trouble because he is a black man.

I tip my hat to you, my friend. Excellent approach to this situation. I truly think Al Sharpton (he’s not a Rev. to me because that means I respect him) is a media whore. He only comes out to preach when he sees an oppurtunity to further his bullshit agenda. Where was he when Mike Vick was killing dogs. Or when Rae Curruth killed his woman. Or when Marshawn Lynch was hitting a pedestrian and then driving away. This ass f*ck needs to point the finger at these “thugs” and say “don’t act like that” instead of pointing at Imus and saying “don’t say that”
This country needs to stop being a bunch apologetic pussies.

I also hate the fact that my “opinions” are conveyed to the world through the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson who are sensationalists who are looking to get their names in the paper. I’m not saying that they don’t do any good at all, but they think they represent black people too much. That being said, in my opinion, from the way it was stated the guy probably meant it in a bad way, then again, if he was trying to be funny, he might not have meant it maliciously. I just don’t get why no issue is taken up with the fact that people who are not black always use the “yo, yo, wassup, dawg, etc.” kind of speech when trying to portray a black person. And, since we’re talking about race, for those of you who have ever used the word “wigger” before, please look at the word then think about it. Thanks.

Al Sharpton made his name on based on fraud, the whole T. Brawley case was pure fiction and Al Sharpton knew it was fiction and pushed it anyway for the publicity.
The last thing we need to hear is Al Sharpton telling us how to do anything.

Henry Plainview, by saying “of course blacks will think this is racist” is a stereotypical comment itself. I hope the irony you’re referring to is the statement itself and not that other “ironic” point you made.

Now Adam Jones is a victim. Al Sharpton is monitoring the situation. Great! The only one who will profit from this is Adam Jones and Al Sharpton. Sharpton will line his pockets and Jones will be reinstated. Goodell will bend to the pressure. Fact!
Question to the black brethren (who love football and actually like white people). What the “F” does Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson do (for a living and for the black community) ? Seriously! Does the black community really follow him? Is the black community tied into them beside a race incident? I really, really want to know. Personally, as a white guy, I’m sick of both of them. They only seem to pop up when a controversial statement is made. I certainly won’t apologize for being white, but I certainly won’t back an white idiot like Imus for being a moron.
From one white guy to another, Florio, put your West Virginia teeth back into your head and give us some football news we can use for fantasy football. Remember we don’t love you but rather football.

Wouldn’t it also be stereotyping police officers to say that they were more likely to pull over a black man? Where are the outraged police? No doubt at the donut shop…

dc guy: did you just gloss over krusty’s or my post? sharpton/jackson definitely do NOT represent the black community and the way your 2nd paragraph was written suggests to me that you’ve already reached a conclusion on whether they do or not, not that you’re actually looking for answers. to be civil INTERNET STYLE though, i apologize for taking such a leap of faith if that’s not the case.
things haven’t changed. jones may now be a “victim” of ignorant statements from controversial radio hosts but he’s still possibly a turd whose actions led to the death of an innocent bystander. sharpton’s noise will go away like always in the recent times… not a lot of people take him seriously (especially after the duke lacrosse team scandal) , not anyone smart anyways. jones’s (likely) upcoming reinstatement has more to do with the current NFL player conduct policy and his suspension served rather than the influence of some notorious race baiter. FACT!

Not that I agree with what Imus said nor does he get the benefit of the doubt, but before Sharpton injects his fat ass into anything, he and Jackson need to seriously make a public apology to the poor kids at Duke which they vilified and deemed guilty until proven innocent. I know they would have been preaching the “innocent until proven guilty” theme if it were three black kids accused of raping a white girl. They need to acknowledge and take responsibility for their own mistakes before they start their own crusades (if they have, someone please direct me to the link).

The reason Al “Shakedown” Sharpton is waiting a day is to see how much he can get from Imus.
Sharpton is a racist, Adam Jones is a turd, and Imus is a dolt. This isn’t worth your ridiculous rant.
Florio, your white guilt is showing.

Seriously Florio, quit being a liberal sissy. Free Speech is free speech. If you don’t like what Imus has to say, don’t listen. Yes his comments may have been over the line, but he can say it if he wants to.
As for your commentary on it, stick with football. Stay out of politics and news like this. I know Pacman… I mean Adam Jones is a football player, but the news has nothing to do with him playing football.
As for Al Sharpton, no one cares what that racist has to say. Yes I called Al Sharpton a racist. Blaming the white man for everything makes him a racist.
But after all, I guess I’m just a bitter typical white person clinging to God and my guns to think any different.

Treadmiller: You didn’t answer all the questions. I’ve reached no conclusions, yet. I’m actually looking for answers. Answer this question: What the “F” does Sharpton and Jackson do? They obviously represent the black community based on the incident you named (Duke Lacrosse scandal). He obviously was taken serious since all white players were suspended and the season was cancelled. We won’t get into that. Sharpton’s “noise” raises and falls based on these types of statements. Don’t be fooled, Goodell will bend to Sharpton. Fact!

well if sharpton is involved with it then I am all for I imus. you are guarranteed free speech in this country, not p.c speech but free speech which means he can say and believe whatever he wants. you do not have to agree with him and if you don’t then don’t listen to him.I will not support any boycotts of sponsers and in fact won’t use their products if they decide to pull out and he is fired. their alot more important things to worry about than trying to change one man’s opinon.if what he said was so wrong then point out the stats that prove him wrong if not then to bad deal with the fact he was right.
