A statement has been released on behalf of Giants cornerback Geoffrey Pope, who was cleared of responsibility in connection with a man who was busted in the head with a champagne bottle over the weekend.
The victim is the son of an anchor on Channel 4 in Detroit, and Pope is asking for an apology, due to Pope’s belief that the station blew the matter out of proportion.
“Pope feels that he was being targeted because he is on a high profile team,” the statement reads. “He feels he deserves an apology from Channel 4 news because of how intense they made the situation.”
Pope was cleared after another suspect stepped forward and took responsibility for the incident.
“After pleading with the Detroit police and letting them know that he wasn’t the suspect, Pope was arrested under false accusations,” the statement explains. “The suspect came forward Sunday, June 22nd and turned himself in.”

So since he’s not a high profile player he used the “high profile team” line. Good one.

HA! The media, apologize? The only way to make the media sorry for anything it does is to sue.

Don’t you have to claim racism if you want people to care about any wrong-doing against you?

As for this notion that Geoff paid the guy off, he’s not exactly living in a mansion. Pope spent most of the regular season on the practice squad (they make about $81 grand a year). We’re not talking Peyton Manning money here. Hell, we’re not even talking about a year’s worth of the NFL minimum salary. Geoff can’t just throw out thousands of dollars because he doesn’t have them.

Yeah. Clearly it was the Giants that paid him off.

Boy, makes me wish I was on the bar in Michigan. This is one of the clearest cases of defamation/slander you could ask for. Sounds to me like he has already lawyered up, and the attorney has suggested asking for a public apology. If the station and its ownership are unwilling to apologize publicly, then they are making a public stand that what they said was true. At that point, Pope has one of the easiest defamation lawsuits a lawyer could ever hope for. This guy is a pro athlete. The monetary damages caused by the false report (and the impending “turd” perception of this athlete) would be in the 7-figures, easily. Double that for legal fees, and this station has a nightmare on its hands. They should do the right thing and publicly apologize and recant their statements, which still does not totally clear them of any liabilities for defamation, but which might satiate Mr. Pope’s understandable anger.
