They'd still investigate and there would still be witnesses that he did it, if he actually did. The fact they cleared him so quickly says to me there was absolutely nothing to indicate he might be guilty. In this case, Mr. Pope is absolved (allegedly) from the incident or has paid (allegedly) the self confessed criminal for admitting to it on his behalf.
