The next couple of weeks represents the rare period on the NFL calendar when coaches and front offices types get away from football and relax.
For 49ers coach Mike Nolan, relaxation means taking a trip to Afghanistan.
According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Nolan is visiting all four branches of the military during his one-week “vacation”. (He might also be wise to see if any of those guys can throw a football, given his options at quarterback.)
“We all know that teamwork is important in any sport, but here the importance of teamwork goes without saying,” Nolan said.

Bin Laden being found would be a giant news making headline. I just can’ t believe he has never been spotted or captured. He’s in a foreign country to him and still is protected better than any head of state.

mr. florio,
i understand your frustration with the slow news cycle, and it is hard not to take a jab at the 49ers inability to find a capable qb, however i believe any comment regarding a man such as nolan, whose job requires little or no element of risk of life or limb, who choses to spend his vacation time in a place such as afghanistan with the men and women of our nation who are stationed over there to be a comment of commendation. the men and women of the u.s. armed forces deserve our respect, sympathy, encouragement, gratitude, and so much more. nolan is doing more than too many of us, particularly those of means who could make the trip as well, to let the soldiers know they are in our thoughts and prayers. it is a sad state of affairs, but hopefully a hand full of soldiers will get to spend sometime either reveling in the opportunity to meet the coach of their favorite team, or in good nature tell the man, face to face, that his team down right sucks…

I’m not sure of the meaning of your headline, but I’ll give many, many kudos to Coach Nolan and those of his staff who are traveling to Afghanistan in order to show support for our troops.
Good job Coach, and best wishes on your upcoming season from a Bear fan.

Q-man:
Not so hard to believe really - Imagine trying to find one guy hiding in the Rocky mountains if that guy had a support network and enough holes to hide in. Unfortunately, the way they’re coddling these a-holes in Pakistan, I doubt he’ll ever be taken alive. Just have to hope somebody turns on him, or he screws up somewhere.

Nolan’s a good man. Bin Laden must die. For every minute he remains alive, another addition to the frustration of our special forces, Delta Force and intelligence services. This is still a black eye to them. No running away from it. It’s become like education, “throw more money at it to solve the problem.” Hell, Blackwater has more leeway, and can’t get him. Just a disgrace to our commando resources.

Kevin from Philly….
you really think someones gonna risk their life to turn on him??? these people have twisted minds and think they’re doing whats right, and not only that, but they have the protection of their militia. In their minds, they are the “Untouchables”. No way is anyone going to give that up to ATTEMPT to turn him in. These people close to Bin Laden aren’t the idiots that people want to portray them as.

Pagoclown>>> Well stated, and I second your thoughts. As these posts go down various rabbit trails of “where is Bin Ladin” or “Nolan should run for cover”, the heart of the story is about a man going and showing respect, and gratitude to men and women, for a service they volunteered for.
As someone who really has no desire to wish anything good for the 49r’s, in regard to success on the gridiron, I raise a toast to someone who is making his actions speak louder than words.

I’m sure Nolan’s heart is in the right place - but it’s a sorry state of affairs overseas if a coach who is 16-32 with 3 straight losing seasons and lost final say on personnel matters is actually expected to MOTIVATE our troops.
But on the bright side, I guess things could be worse… they could be getting Eric MangIdiot instead.

that is where he is. good luck. Comparing it to the Rockies does not come close. Alexander the Great, The British Empire in their Prime, The U.S.S.R. at their peak, and now the US. The closer you get to that patch of mountains the closer you get to defeat. It is impossible to overtake and control to find a person without sending ground troops in absurd numbers. And even they will deal with some of the worst heat, terrain, and other conditions known to man.
