The San Francisco 49ers have signed tight end Delanie Walker to a contract extension. The move apparently came earlier in the offseason; it was first reported over the weekend.
Walker has only 23 catches in 23 career games, but he received a three-year, $6 million extension, which included a $1.8 million signing bonus.
The 2006 sixth-round pick is now signed through 2012.
It’s unclear when the deal was signed, but the numbers already are on file with the NFLPA. Walker will receive base salaries of $445,000 in 2008, $535,000 in 2009, $655,000 in 2010, $750,000 in 2011, and $1.045 million in 2012.
A former college wideout, Walker is listed in the NFLPA salary database as a receiver. On the team’s official site, however, Walker is still identified as a tight end.
UPDATE: The deal was signed on April 21. The deal also includes roster bonuses of $650,000 in 2010, $400,000 in 2011, and $400,000 in 2012, along with more than $1 million in potential escalators.

This only reinforces the notion that Vernon “baby oil” Davis is a bust. The Niners have drafted well under the Nolan-Mchloughan regime however its first 3 first round picks have all yeat to make an impact with only Manny Lawson having a chance to really do something in the future.
Alex has been dead in the water since he lost McCarthy and Norv turner in successive seasons being forced to learn 3 completely different offenses in 3 years and having one year go completely to waste under Hostler and clashing with his HC in a public fued.
Baby Oil is just stupid and has never picked up on any offense. He will really struggle in Martz offense where it is even more complicated. He is a combine wonder and will never be an impact player. He is the new Rickey Dudley.

Florio, with all due respect, every article needs a who, what, where, why and how.
And I think I speak for everyone when I say: “WHO?”

I remember Delanie Walker from the Scouting COmbine a few years back. He was grouped with the WRs, he was short at around 6′1 but weighed around 240 and ran in the low 4.5 range… but most importantly, he shares my daughter’s first name (phonetically speaking)… I wonder if Walker was named after the former Chief’s RB that died while trying to save a group of boys from drowning, too.

Tampa Hoss-
Niners fans sure as hell know who this guy is. He’s extremely talented and has been working hard to shine through Davis’s shadow. He hasn’t seen the field enough, but he has played snaps at TE, WR, H-back, and has even returned kicks at times. This is a great move to sign him to an extension while most NFL people are saying “WHO?”
Dick V-
I’d wait before calling Davis a bust. The problem has been that the last two OC’s have asked him to block more often than running a pattern. He is a dominant blocker, but blocking doesn’t get a TE to the Pro Bowl. When he does get the ball in his hands, he’s like a running back. A 250-lb running back with 4.38 speed. I’ll admit he hasn’t reached his potential, but everyone has struggled with the situation at coordinator with this team.

Davis HAD 4.38 speed at the combine a few years ago but as an ACC fan and frequent watcher of 49ers games, I can attest that he is no 4.38 on the field and never has been. He runs well on the field for a TE, but lacks the breakaway gear in pads that most guys running 4.38’s do. He looks more like a 4.5-4.6 guy, and he certainly hasn’t lived up to his draft status.

I’ve watched Delanie Walker at training camp. I’ve watched Vernon Davis. Both are beasts. Vernon Davis is one of the best blocking tight ends you’ll ever see. He is no bust. He is not been what he was advertised to be but I still get excited to see the ball in that guys hands. He still put up better numbers than most tight ends last year while missing three games and playing in a defunct offense.
And Delanie Walker is an ultimate sleeper. The guy has playmaking ability and it was evident last year during the Minnesota Vikings game. He is solid and we need to keep those guys around. Thanks Florio for continuing to post about “WHO?” players. Its good to see those guys recognized by somebody when they work as hard as anybody else in the NFL for their job.

brasho…
you must not watch 49ers game frequently enough. sure, Davis isn’t running 4.38 while running routes, but he certainly does when he has enough room to run full speed. you must not have seen his very first reception in the NFL, which happened to go for a touchdown as he ran down the sideline past the entire Arizona defense. i also remember seeing him go Jim Brown on the Green Bay defense in 2007, as he ran through, past, and around defenders for a TD.

“you must not watch 49ers game frequently enough. sure, Davis isn’t running 4.38 while running routes, but he certainly does when he has enough room to run full speed.”
So basically you’re saying that he doesn’t accelerate very well?
“you must not have seen his very first reception in the NFL, which happened to go for a touchdown as he ran down the sideline past the entire Arizona defense. i also remember seeing him go Jim Brown on the Green Bay defense in 2007, as he ran through, past, and around defenders for a TD. ”
Impressive. You just described roughly 28% of his career TDs. What a gameday speedster Vernon Davis must be to score so often, huh?

i’m still trying to figure out how a guy that played in 10 games his ROOKIE year and had 20rec, then played in 14 games his 2nd year and had 52rec is a bust…i don’t get it…52rec with a horrible offensive coordinator, horrible QB play which was a result of horrible O-Line blocking and horribe game planning…yup VD is a bust, wow….real football fans break things down and give valid reasons for calling someone a bust and not just go on expectations of a guy coming out his ROOKIE year and having 85rec for 1000yds and 10tds from the TE spot…yeah right, be foreal
