We’re starting to regret promising to give props to every player who conducts a free youth football camp.
But we said we would, so we suppose we should.
Here’s a quick summary of the camps, in the order the e-mails have arrived.
Ravens defensive tackle Dwan Edwards is hosting a free camp in Billings, Montana on July 11 and 12. Other players attending include Ravens linebacker Bart Scott and Ravens quarterback (and Heisman winner) Troy Smith.
Jags cornerback Drayton Florence hosted a free camp in Ocala, Florida on Saturday; 312 kids attended. Other NFL players who appeared were free-agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper, Chargers safety Clint Hart. (Jags safety Reggie Nelson and cornerback Rashean Mathis were scheduled to attend, but didn’t show. For shame.)
Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb hosted on June 14 a free camp for 350 boys and girls age 11 through 14. From June 13 through 20, McNabb hosted his annual Diabetes Camp for Kids, with 140 in attendance.
Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans will host a free camp on June 28 in Bessemer, Alabama.
That same day, Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell will host a free camp in Mobile.
On June 8, Bills defensive back Donte Whitner hosted a free camp in Cleveland.
Jets receiver Jerricho Cotchery conducted a free camp on June 22 in Birmingham.
Jags linebacker Mike Peterson will conduct a free camp for 250 kids on June 28 in Gainesville.
Cowboys running back Marion Barber held a free camp in Minneapolis on Saturday; Pats running back Laurence Maroney was one of the guys who pitched in.
Bears defensive tackle Israel Idonije conducted a free camp on June 14.
That’s all for now. We have a feeling we’ll hear about more.

Jeremy Stevens and Steve Duemig are co-hosting a free camp for DUI offenders called “I Can’t Walk But I Can Drive Camp”. Other attendees are as follows: Leonard Little, Chris Henry, Cedric Benson, and Jevon Kearse. Noteworthy: Marcus Vick will be barred from the camp. Even these guys gotta draw the line somewhere.

If I conduct a free camp (how a person who is a magazine intern who never played tackled football in his life [but yes to organized flag football!] winds up running a football camp is beyond me), then do I get mentioned on the site?

Perhaps the proper course of action is not to focus on the negative aspects of the world as most media do.
Then again, who would read that?
For every Pacman and Chris Henry and Leonard Little that we all know about, there are many, many decent human beings.
Letting the dregs overpower the virtuous is devilry.

Well, goes to show you that if you did just a little bit, these vast majority of these NFL guys are doing good things and not all doing crazy things with champagne bottles. Also that people do not like writting about them. Case in point:
“We’re starting to regret promising to give props to every player who conducts a free youth football camp.” PFT.
The juicy stuff is what sells commercials.

There used to be a Pacman Jones summer camp to benefit runaway teenage girls in Las Vegas, but I think that’s been cancelled.

Rudi Johnson of the Cincinnati Bengals also conducted a free football camp. Our son went and had the experience of a lifetime. Rudi talked one on one with every kid. He gave everyone his autograpd and a goody bag filled with things. Everyone also got a free t-shirt and lunch. This was held in May, 2008.

The first post on this page, and the raves it’s received - is telling. Even when the positives of these players are highlighted, people relish in bringing it right back to the negative. Who says hating wasn’t an art form?
Some of these players don’t know that they are supposed to make us fat, talentless nobodies feel better about their prodigious gifts and ble$$ings by being clueless, law-breaking screw ups (and a single-digit score on the Wonderlic always helps). Each time we’re reminded that there are players who have talent, money, AND a good head on their shoulders - we die a little inside.
So please…fewer free camps - and more police investigations, champagne-wasting, and Goodell suspensions. It is our Prozac.
