Less than 15 months after losing his gig on WFAN and MSNBC for making racially charged comments regarding the Rutgers women’s basketball team, radio icon Don Imus has danced dangerously close to, and arguably over, the line again.
On Monday, Imus had the following exchange with Warner Wolf:
Wolf: “Defensive back Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones, recently signed by the Cowboys. Here’s a guy suspended all of 2007 following a shooting in a Vegas night club.”
Imus: “Well, stuff happens. You’re in a night club, for God’s sake. What do you think’s gonna happen in a night club? People are drinking, they’re doing drugs. There are women there, and people have guns. So, there, go ahead.”
Wolf: “He’s also been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.”
Imus: “What color is he?”
Wolf: “He’s African-American.”
Imus: “Well, there you go. Now we know.”
Last time around, the comments represented a partial effort at humor. This time around, it was a matter-of-fact statement, with no chuckles, yuks, tee-hees, or ha’s. As we see it, if the comment wasn’t overtly and blatantly racist, then what the hell was it?
Maybe we’re wrong on this one. Even so, it was nothing short of stoopid to fly so close to the flame that already burned him once.
Here’s the audio. PFT Planet, what say you about this one?
UPDATE: A few readers have suggested that Imus was referring to a belief that African-Americans are more likely to be arrested because of police profiling. Reading the transcript might possibly cause a reasonable person to perhaps think that; listening to the audio tends to (in our opinion) rule out any positive spin that could be placed on this one. Besides, if Imus was trying to make a broader social comment regarding the question of whether black men are more likely to be arrested because of their race, he needs to offer up something more substantive than, “There you go. Now we know.” Especially in light of the Rutgers thing.

I actually think he was implying that because pacman is African-American he is targeted by police.

I’m not going to listen to the audio - can’t where I am - but could it be Imus was implying that the reason Pacman was arrested was because he was black? Might he have been implying not that black people commit crime, but that if Pacman had been white he wouldn’t have been arrested? Since the “there you go” followed the statement about the number of arrests?

First….
Imus doesn’t care, I mean did he really get burned the by Rutgers anyway. He is still on the radio, right??
I just don’t think it’s smart to say that about someone who could be in need of some money though. Pacman, excuse me, Adam Jones might sue for a new house you know.

As Stoopid as Don Imus is, he is not the biggest idiot in this situation. The company that rehired that moron should be the ones who take responsibility for Imus’ terrible comments. An 80 year old racist is not going to change. And the company that employs him should have known that.

Wow, i usually the one defending peoples free speech, but after the last thing this seems WORSE. To me that was a blatantly racist thing to say. If you ask what color they are and then say thee you go, your impling that it was commonplace for that race to be in trouble. Now, if you know Imus, you know he pushes the pc line qite a bit. I think if enough ears hear this one he’ll b done for sure.

Is it racist if it’s based on truth/reality? I think it’s up to the African-American community to change how they’re perceived, not the other way around. They can start by not screaming racism every time they are confronted with the truth.

Ya, I didn’t hear the audio, and coming from a guy with a less than credible record it’s hard to give him the benefit of the doubt… but by the context of the words, it does seem like he was making a reference that black people are statistically targetted more. To his credit, he hasn’t been convicted despite so many arrests, which helps prove that point.

Here’s the surprising thing, Don Imus said something and somebody out there in radio-land was actually listening. There are plenty of way worse things that get said on a daily basis through out America that never see the light of day… why? Because the people that are saying it are nobodies. I think Imus is just going the way of specialty stores trying to compete with Wal-Mart and such and looking for a target niche audience. It might make financial sense for him to target racists, Klan members and idiots. I seriously doubt ANYBODY is listening to him these days, this is a good move for him.

First, Mike Florio is not African American (near as I can tell) and he’s the one “screaming racism”, not the black community.
Second, everyone is entitled to free speach in this county. However, not everyone is entitled to a nationally syndicated radio show financed by sponsors who want people to buy their products. There’s a huge difference there. Imus can go spout his venom through a megaphone on a street corner, but if he wants to do it over the radio, he needs to play by a different set of rules. Free speach does not apply here.
Third. Despite all his charity work with the cancer kids at his ranch, the dude is at worst a hardcore racist, and at best a jaded, faded, and dated celebrity whose 15 minutes are quickly coming to a close. This latest comment is sure to get him booted again.

now im no racist by any means. but what he said is just the truth. i mean lets look at how many NFL players that are african americans that have been arrested in the past couple years VS any other race of people. Cedric Benson (twice in less then a month) Pacman Jones (countless times) Chris Henry, Odell Thurman, Javon Kearse, Marshawn Lynch(not arrested yet but about to be)Tank Johnson, Michael Vick, Bryant Mckinnie, Brandon Marshall, i mean seriously i could keep going all day long. now how many NFL players that are white, hispanic, asian, been arrested? I can Name Todd Sauerbrun, and David Kircus. hell nine Bengals players were arrested or in trouble with the law within a calendar year. and all of them are african american.like i said im no racist but those are simple facts. it doesnt matter who they may offend, its the truth. i dont believe Imus said what he said out of racial hatred, but he said it out of statistical truth.

I would almost bet he is racist. I do know that this is AMERICA and our constitution guarentees him the right to free speech. Like many have said….if you don’t like it…don’t listen. I’ll go with that. I don’t think he’s funny, and I disagree with him on most all things he says. I havn’t listened to him in years. But as I sit here writing this it may be that he continues to say things (like this) to get ppl to talk about him, afterall he is a “shock jock”. Isn’t he?

the 1st amendment gives him the right to say whatever he wants…but it also gives me the right to call him either racist or an idiot who doesn’t know when to shut his mouth, and i don’t think of imus as an idiot, so there you go.
just because everyone has free speech under the 1st amendment doesn’t exclude them from having to deal with the consequences of what they say. If you are stupid enough to say something that you know will get you ass beat for, you deserve to get your ass beat in my opinion…oh and by the way im…uhhhh…european-american…just shut your mouth imus.
