Less than 15 months after losing his gig on WFAN and MSNBC for making racially charged comments regarding the Rutgers women’s basketball team, radio icon Don Imus has danced dangerously close to, and arguably over, the line again.
On Monday, Imus had the following exchange with Warner Wolf:
Wolf: “Defensive back Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones, recently signed by the Cowboys. Here’s a guy suspended all of 2007 following a shooting in a Vegas night club.”
Imus: “Well, stuff happens. You’re in a night club, for God’s sake. What do you think’s gonna happen in a night club? People are drinking, they’re doing drugs. There are women there, and people have guns. So, there, go ahead.”
Wolf: “He’s also been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.”
Imus: “What color is he?”
Wolf: “He’s African-American.”
Imus: “Well, there you go. Now we know.”
Last time around, the comments represented a partial effort at humor. This time around, it was a matter-of-fact statement, with no chuckles, yuks, tee-hees, or ha’s. As we see it, if the comment wasn’t overtly and blatantly racist, then what the hell was it?
Maybe we’re wrong on this one. Even so, it was nothing short of stoopid to fly so close to the flame that already burned him once.
Here’s the audio. PFT Planet, what say you about this one?
UPDATE: A few readers have suggested that Imus was referring to a belief that African-Americans are more likely to be arrested because of police profiling. Reading the transcript might possibly cause a reasonable person to perhaps think that; listening to the audio tends to (in our opinion) rule out any positive spin that could be placed on this one. Besides, if Imus was trying to make a broader social comment regarding the question of whether black men are more likely to be arrested because of their race, he needs to offer up something more substantive than, “There you go. Now we know.” Especially in light of the Rutgers thing.

part3: not sure if you guys noticed, but there are hundreds of black nfl players that stay out of trouble completely. but hey, if your views on nfl players depend strictly on digesting ESPN fodder without any critical thought, black people just LOVE crime.
the “he’s got freedom of speech!!!” comments are even more hilarious. of course he has a right of free speech in the US. the response by AVP92 sums up my feelings quite nicely. people do have a valid point in calling for imus to get canned since he’s on us radio waves, which is governed by stricter rules than just “freedom of speech for everyone yay!!” aren’t you the same people that whine when florio posts some non-race related controversial remarks? but he has freedom of speech!!! lol

Take an objective look at the statistics. I know this is a generalization, but it is a fact that the percentage of blacks that commit serious crimes is FAR higher than the percentage of whites. Now I’m not saying that all white NFL players are perfect ciitizens, cuz they aren’t, and I’m not saying that most black NFLers are thugs, cuz they aren’t. But when you think of the recent turds in the NFL, who comes to mind. For me, its Vick, Pacman, Chris Henry, and Tank Johnson. They all happen to be black. Coincidince? I think not.
Leave Imus alone and let him speak him mind. ESPECIALLY when the statistics support his opinion.

ACDC84….there simply aren’t enough white players in the NFL for you to make an argument. For every Vick, Pacman, Chris Henry and Tank Johnson…there is a Warrick Dunn, Derrick Brooks, Larry FItzgerald,Donovan Mcnabb, Jason Campbell, David Garrard, Ladainan Tomlison…the list goes on and on.

acdc84: yeah, real “objective” perspective you have there.
1) why would you state something as fact when you “know it’s a generalization”, lol?
2) it’s nice that the recent turds you can think of happen to be the most publicized cases (courtesy of the very objective ESPN, who for sure can’t be biased…at all). they all happen to be black, so it can’t just be a coincidence (over a sample of four players where the population is mostly black…VERY SIGNIFICANT OF COURSE). REAL OBJECTIVE THERE chief. jared allen, lofa tatupu have been arrested for DUIs. they are not black. coincidence? I THINK NOT!!! (sorry, maybe i should get two more players to meet your criteria for a decent sample size to make “objective” conclusions off of)
3) tell me, which statistics support his opinion (specifically, which data) and in what way? you might want to look up what causation, correlation, confounding variables, and outliers are before you make anymore “objective” statements that are generalizations but are also facts! lol get real

1. anyone who thinks Imus was trying to find sympathy w/ “Adam” situation is completely psychotic.
2. he’s allowed to say whatever he wants, no matter how nearsighted it may be.
Sorry if I’m repeating an earlier comment, but i didn’t read all of them.
