Less than 15 months after losing his gig on WFAN and MSNBC for making racially charged comments regarding the Rutgers women’s basketball team, radio icon Don Imus has danced dangerously close to, and arguably over, the line again.
On Monday, Imus had the following exchange with Warner Wolf:
Wolf: “Defensive back Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones, recently signed by the Cowboys. Here’s a guy suspended all of 2007 following a shooting in a Vegas night club.”
Imus: “Well, stuff happens. You’re in a night club, for God’s sake. What do you think’s gonna happen in a night club? People are drinking, they’re doing drugs. There are women there, and people have guns. So, there, go ahead.”
Wolf: “He’s also been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.”
Imus: “What color is he?”
Wolf: “He’s African-American.”
Imus: “Well, there you go. Now we know.”
Last time around, the comments represented a partial effort at humor. This time around, it was a matter-of-fact statement, with no chuckles, yuks, tee-hees, or ha’s. As we see it, if the comment wasn’t overtly and blatantly racist, then what the hell was it?
Maybe we’re wrong on this one. Even so, it was nothing short of stoopid to fly so close to the flame that already burned him once.
Here’s the audio. PFT Planet, what say you about this one?
UPDATE: A few readers have suggested that Imus was referring to a belief that African-Americans are more likely to be arrested because of police profiling. Reading the transcript might possibly cause a reasonable person to perhaps think that; listening to the audio tends to (in our opinion) rule out any positive spin that could be placed on this one. Besides, if Imus was trying to make a broader social comment regarding the question of whether black men are more likely to be arrested because of their race, he needs to offer up something more substantive than, “There you go. Now we know.” Especially in light of the Rutgers thing.

Imus is a cranky, old, ex-drug addict who needs to be taken to the glue factory. Not sure if he was ever funny, maybe in the 70’s when I was like 5, but nothing I remember hearing from this blowhard approached humor. His whole approach to radio is Risque-Disdain and I don’t find it funny. That also goes for that other New York flee bag of a radio program, Howard Stern.
But having said that, how far off is Imus comment?
The generality seems to be correct more often than not, when it comes to the color of the arrested in the NFL.
Blame society, blame the community, blame the individual, blame the law and order types, but in the end, no matter what version you grab for, there is a problem.
The disproportionate representation of black Americans in the U.S. criminal justice system is well documented. Blacks comprise 13 percent of the national population, but 30 percent of people arrested, 41 percent of people in jail, and 49 percent of those in prison. Nine percent of all black adults are under some form of correctional supervision (in jail or prison, on probation or parole), compared to two percent of white adults. One in three black men between the ages of 20 and 29 was either in jail or prison, or on parole or probation in 1995. One in ten black men in their twenties and early thirties is in prison or jail. Thirteen percent of the black adult male population has lost the right to vote because of felony disenfranchisement laws.

Imus had the foresight to pick a complete asshole to make judgments about black people in general. In that sense, he was smart.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s a complete piece of excrement. Next!

Imus didn’t get fired for being a racist, he got fired because his sponsors were going to pull out. Half the reason they put him back on was because he was edgy, they couldn’t control him, but for some reason, people found that interesting. He’s like these sportscasters who say stupid, inflammatory things that make people hate them. They say them, and nothing happens to them… because people still listen. Everything is ultimately driven by money. If you don’t like him, don’t listen to him. if you don’t listen to him, the sponsors will pull out.

stern treats almost all groups like dirt. but he gets a pass…
if his employer wants to fire imus they can do that. they might then have issues filling that slot and making as much $$$$$$$$$$$$….
if someone wants to beat the ass of everyone they may disagree with, that someone will shortly get shot. i suggest someone learn to live with a few things someone doesnt like.
for instance, of all black/white interracial crime/violence/rape etc, it is overwhelmingly virtually all black-on-white. as a result, it is utter bs to be calling some old man on the radio “racist”. he didnt commit a crime.
some others did and do, however, and imus making the connection between being of a certain race and being in trouble was entirely correct.
facts are facts, and they are stubborn things. all these twits hollering racism and wanting imus’s head ought to get their own house in order for a change. or better yet, change the channel. get a hobby. listen to classical music. get a job.
free speech is free speech. if one doesnt like it, move elsewhere.

I didn’t find Imus’ comment offensive. The NFL is over 70% black and just about every player reported on Turd Watch is black.

Imus is paid to say shocking things and violate taboos in order to get ratings. This was probably preplanned just to get people to know he’s back on the air, so they can tune into whatever dumbass country station he’s doing the morning show on.
Fake conservatives, also known as NEOconservatives (or “big government conservatives,” or “fascists”) like Imus are the first to call for 911 truthers to be hauled off to concentration camps. Ironic, isn’t it?

I see nothing racist about it. It’s statistics. Black guys like Adam Jones are the ones that set the stereotype. 1 out of 3 black men have been in some form of correctional programs…you dont like it, dont listen. If some black guy were to talk about white people on the radio like that, it wouldnt be considered racist. Its a double standard. Free speech for all and if you dont like it, leave the country.

Fress speech gives him the right to say racist things, just like it gives other races the right to say what they want to say. If you dont like him dont listen to him its that simple. I personally dont care for the guy so i just dont tune into his show. Its not that hard. Some people want to hear that stuff and its their right. I dont agree with him saying the stupid things he says, but i will defend his and every other persons right to say what they want

A) Free speech has limitations. You can’t yell fire in a crowded movie theater and hate speech isn’t protected (or at least it shouldn’t be). Since he’s on the radio and this is his job they are well within their rights to punish him (and they should) for ish like this. There are regulations of what can be said over the airways and they have to answer to their advertisers. This kind of action if it gets noticed will result in threats from the advertisers to pull out which will equal good bye Imus.
B) Yes if you look around these sports figures in the NFL getting busted are probably predominantly African American. Does that mean that their “race” has anything to do with criminal behavior? Of course not. It just means that if you look around the league is predominantly made up of African American players so they have a higher chance of having a number of them getting arrested for being idiots. Simply put since there are fewer whites in the league there are a fewer chances of one of them doing something criminal. The large amount of African Americans in the league however are law abiding and from the list posted earlier about their free camps good human beings.
Just because Imus is racist and white does not mean all whites are racist and just because Pacman is a moron and a criminal does not mean that all African Americans are either.
As I see it the amount this blows up will be affected by how many people actually hear this and probably how people feel about Pacman. You had innocent college girls in the last blow up this time you have a thug who still has to demonstrate he’s changed his ways. Pacman can’t champion this cause it will have to come from those outraged by these comments disparaging an entire group of people because of the actions of one man.

Why is what Imus said such a travesty but Barrack Obama, who may be the next President of the USA, can call his grandmother a “typical white person” and thats ok? Heck, not only was it ok, it was lauded as one of the best speeches in history. Imagine if McCain said, so-and-so is a “typical black person”. You think the reaction would be the same? Time to stop moving the goals posts(tossing in a football analogy to stay on topic):).
Let go of the “white guilt” folks.

empty13, read some Supreme Court decisions, and you’ll fully understand free speech. It’s not 100 percent, say-anything, especially if what you say can cause harm to others — or, if you’re in the press, saying something is fact when it in fact is not.
I actually was just for a little suspension for Don Imus last time, but this time he most certainly crossed the line. What he said was racist. He is a racist. What’s the point of being a racist? How can people look themselves in the mirror and in today’s society be racist?
A step in the right direction will occur when Barack Obama becomes the 44th President of the United States, though.

Again…we all have free speech…the freedom to say what we want and the GOVERNMENT will not punish us. Imus is not a government employee so job/speech at his job is not protected by the constitution from attack FROM HIS EMPLOYER
If the government would attack his speech that would be a free speech issue
but a PRIVATE COMPANY does not have to employ anyone they do not want to…or will lose them money(when the sponsors drop)

Wait, are you guys getting political? I come here for NFL updates and inside stuff, along with some pretty decent humor. Why are you trying to beat the bushes on this one? Steer clear of the politics and radio-policing (esp. since it could likely come back and bite you in the ass one day) and give your readers what they come here for. Regardless of whether Imus was being racist or not (very likely was…doesn’t matter to me cuz I think he’s an idiot and I don’t listen to him) there’s no need for you to go stirring up trouble for him and starting a grass-roots campaign. Understand that along with your success and increased readership comes a bit more responsibility…like it or not you DO affect popular opinion, so be careful with your (relatively) newfound power. Let other idiots do the finger-pointing and tattle-tailing…stick to what you do best please. Hint: this ain’t it.
