Less than 15 months after losing his gig on WFAN and MSNBC for making racially charged comments regarding the Rutgers women’s basketball team, radio icon Don Imus has danced dangerously close to, and arguably over, the line again.
On Monday, Imus had the following exchange with Warner Wolf:
Wolf: “Defensive back Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones, recently signed by the Cowboys. Here’s a guy suspended all of 2007 following a shooting in a Vegas night club.”
Imus: “Well, stuff happens. You’re in a night club, for God’s sake. What do you think’s gonna happen in a night club? People are drinking, they’re doing drugs. There are women there, and people have guns. So, there, go ahead.”
Wolf: “He’s also been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.”
Imus: “What color is he?”
Wolf: “He’s African-American.”
Imus: “Well, there you go. Now we know.”
Last time around, the comments represented a partial effort at humor. This time around, it was a matter-of-fact statement, with no chuckles, yuks, tee-hees, or ha’s. As we see it, if the comment wasn’t overtly and blatantly racist, then what the hell was it?
Maybe we’re wrong on this one. Even so, it was nothing short of stoopid to fly so close to the flame that already burned him once.
Here’s the audio. PFT Planet, what say you about this one?
UPDATE: A few readers have suggested that Imus was referring to a belief that African-Americans are more likely to be arrested because of police profiling. Reading the transcript might possibly cause a reasonable person to perhaps think that; listening to the audio tends to (in our opinion) rule out any positive spin that could be placed on this one. Besides, if Imus was trying to make a broader social comment regarding the question of whether black men are more likely to be arrested because of their race, he needs to offer up something more substantive than, “There you go. Now we know.” Especially in light of the Rutgers thing.

DaShoe said it right. Sooner or later the A-A community better take responsibility for their perception instead of blaiming “whitey” start by wearing your pants on your hip!

Wow, the guy is politically incorrect, is this new information to anybody?
Here’s a novel concept, if you disagree with him, don’t listen anymore. Nobody is paying you to listen, somebody is paying him to talk.

I believe there is a spelling error here. “I’m” is a contraction for the words “I am.” The man’s last name should be include apostrophes, as in “I’m'us” … which is the correct contraction for “I am an anus.”

I agree with some of these comments. Free speech is a vital right to all of us, but in the same breath I can whole heartedly say that any radio station employing Imus is supporting racism. This guy is obviously too set in his ways to ever change now. Imus is obviously a racist and he is using that to get some attention. I think the attention he should get is to be fired and not hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers!

who really cares? if the NFL really cleaned up the ‘Turds’ (your phrase not mine) and got them out of the sport where they could NOT make millions and act so stupidly, then it would not be an issue.

Yeah, Clintdog, the police just like targeting Jones because of his skin color. Amazing that happens! Especially when so many black athletes are NEVER arrested - for anything. I wonder if the rest just have an active cloking device or something so that when the police are around they disappear. Or could it possibly be that Jones is actually a scumbag who deserves to be arrested and that the only reason he hasn’t been convicted is because he can afford lawyers who can get him out of the trouble he puts himself into? Which is the simplest explanation?

This doesn’t have anything to do with freedom of speech. The First Amendment says that Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech. Nothing here has anything to do with the the FCC or governments whatsoever. This one is just between one jerk with a microphone, his employer, his sponsors, and the listening (and non-listening, but nonetheless offended) public.

The statistics are very clear when it comes to arrests.
Especially in the NFL what percentage of players arrested belong to one group or another.
Why do PC Liberal nut jobs refuse to acknowledge the truth when it comes to criminal activity??
Why does anyone refuse to believe what they see with their one eyes??
Why does should Don Imus be criticized for speaking the truth??
Don Imus didn’t arrest Jones or any of the criminals in the NFL.

Sorry, I’m not buying the racial profiling angle. If that’s what he meant, I think he would have said it. He was making references to the shenanigans and goings-on at nightclubs, then he wants to know what race Pacman is.
To me, he’s making a connection between trouble and African-Americans…and his reputation precedes him.

Maybe the question “What color is he?” dealt with Imus being utterly confused that a grown adult would intentionally refer to himself as Pacman.

Is it racist if it’s based on truth/reality? I think it’s up to the African-American community to change how they’re perceived, not the other way around. They can start by not screaming racism every time they are confronted with the truth……………………

THIS IS NOT A FIRST AMENDMENT ISSUE… the government didn’t fine/jail/or punish him with the Rutgers thing, nor will they with this
BUT…a company has the right to hire/fire anyone they want. If they don’t agree with what you do or say they can get rid of you. Saying this is a freedom of speech issue is about as logical as telling your boss to @#$% off and arguing it is protected under the first amendment.
If sponsors start dropping, the station will be losing money and it forces their hand
When Stern use to argue the first amendment issue it was because the FCC(government) was attacking him… not his employer

“while i am not a fan/listener of imus, free speech is free speech.
those that want to curtail what people can say have the agenda.
free speech for all. and damn those who dont like it.
the first amendment means what it says.”
this has some truth to it, however, you are also forgetting, and not respecting the free speech of the corporate execs over don imus who do not want racist remarks on air that they funded. therefore, it is their right, under your utopian free speach society to kick him off the air whenever he says something they view as inappropriate. If he created his own radio network I would agree he could say whatever he wants. However, seeing as though he is representing other people when he makes these remarks, it is fully constitutional (and a good business move) for a radio organization to release him whenever he crosses the line that their organization has established.
