Former Giants defensive lineman George Martin has completed his walk from New York to San Diego to raise money for health care for 9/11 rescue workers.
“While this has been a difficult undertaking, it has also been wonderful to see our nation on foot while raising awareness about the plight of these 9/11 workers,” Martin said.
Martin began the walk on September 16 in New York City, with an appearance at halftime of the Giants’ game against the Packers that day. He covered 3,003 miles in all.
Martin raised $2 million and is still accepting donations at AJourneyfor911.info.

Absolutely awesome! A lot of these workers were never the same after they breathed in that garbage from the towers collapse.

What an awesome accomplishment and for a great cause. The thing that sucks is this is the first I’ve heard of it!

This guy has been at this for a while. I recall P Kings article about this a little bit ago, I know that Martin has higher goals for his walk, but it is still commendable the effort he made. Very respectable

What a wonderful thing to do for those workers that risked their all to save lives and help rebuild. I work a few blocks away from Ground Zero and all I can say is they have done an amazing job so far and I give them all the credit in the world for what they sacrificed. Martin is a great human being to do what he did to raise money and I will be sure to donate to his cause

This is indeed a fantastic idea and incredible accomplishment, but George probably could have done without the “Walk A Mile In My Shoes” theme song haha. Good job anyhow, George! Very cool.

Some years ago, I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Martin at a Florida tourist attraction I worked at while putting myself through college. He was an exceptionally nice guy and even let me hold his Super Bowl ring. (I didn’t even ask. I just remember saying it was incredible, and he took it off and let me examine it more closely. I’ll never forget how heavy it was, but I digress …)
What he’s done here just shows that not all athletes (or ex-athletes) belong on the turd watch board. Great job, George!

This was for a great cause! But only 2 million? Jeez. The man walked for a YEAR from NY to San Diego. He should have earned more than that.

This is an awesome accomplishment by one of the truly good guys in sports. I know that he wanted to raise more money, but I believe that will come around now that he has completed the walk. Congrats, Mr. Martin!

I don’t want to come across as a smarmy Canadian on this one as it was a great achievement, but do you Americans not view this as a sad indictment of your country and its priorities. Bad enough that every day Americans have to worry about the cost of healthcare, but for those that were harmed in a terrorist attack on the country to go wanting is disgusting (I write this as a political conservative).
May I suggest that basic medical care for all Americans just be considered a given of citizenship. If you are in America legally and legally pay taxes or are a citizen, you and your family should have health care. Period.

This was no small effort…he averaged 22 miles per day which is a hell’ve a lot more than most people walk in a week.
What a great work to show compassion and a desire to help others in need. As stated, I wish I would have know about this prior to the completion of the walk.

“I don’t want to come across as a smarmy Canadian”
Yeah, but you did. You used this to bang the Canadian drum for infecting the US with your country’s crappy healthcare.
WTF?
