Chargers receiver Eric Parker, a solid contributor before missing all of the 2007 season due to injury, will be traded or released before the start of training camp, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The Browns reportedly are interested in Parker, and the Chargers reportedly want a fifth-round pick, a sixth-round pick, or a seventh-round pick for Parker.
But we’re not quite sure why anyone would want to buy Parker’s contract. Signed through 2010, Parker is due to earn base salaries of $1.85 million, $2.225 million, and $2.65 million, respectively, over the next three seasons.
The better approach might be to wait for the Chargers to dump Parker and then sign him for market value. Unless, of course, Parker is willing to take a steep pay cut as part of a trade.

“But we’re not quite sure why anyone would want to buy Parker’s contract”
That’s obvious. If the Browns trade a pick for him, big contract included, it means they’re afraid that if he gets cut someone else will pick him up off waivers before they can snag him. Which means someone out there still believes he’s got a few more big plays left in the tank.
Why the Browns would pay the kinda money for (at best) a fourth receiver, I don’t know - it could be an expensive insurance policy just in case one of their guys gets hurt. Cleveland has been on a roll lately so I’ll give ‘em the benefit of the doubt either way…

Actually, because he’s got more than four NFL seasons, he would instantly become an unrestricted free agent, and would not pass through waivers.

Whats wrong with those salaries if he plays like he did before his injury? I would think that would be pretty cheap for a no.2 or no.3 receiver.

Thanks for publicly humiliating me, Mike. I guess the only thing left to do here is rate your comment a 1 and look for typos :/

packerswin, the problem is not just the salary but the fact that a team would have to handle that existing contract AND give up those draft picks in the trade….a team would much rather pay him his current contract or similar value OR give up draft picks if they can sign him for cheaper….

Because, Parker_is_actually_good.. he has one of the highest active YPC in the game. Very quick, excellent hands.. minus that punt he dropped in playoff game VS Patriots 2 years ago.

parker’s probably worth a 5th-6th rounder at best right now
he’s been out of football a whole season.
this just speaks to how the chargers have improved their wr position
it’s also another one of the few bad moves in retrospect, AJ’s made as a GM
not that he could have foreseen parker getting injured, or olivea getting injured/getting addicted
i predict he’ll be cut

Strange to see the Browns considering giving up more for another receiver — especially after just signing Stallworth and drafting big receivers Paul Hubbard and Martin Rucker. Not to mention Braylon still being #1, Winslow’s ability to line up in the slot, talk of Josh Cribbs having a bigger role in the offense, and young guys like Travis Wilson and Syndric Steptoe still caught in the mix somewhere. It may be a stretch but you have to wonder whether or not they’re considering any of these guys to play DB — an area they could use help in (at the very least, in terms of depth).

Lee C., you wouldn’t give up a 6th or 7th rounder for a no.2 or 3 receiver? I sure would in a heartbeat.

“the Chargers reportedly want a fifth-round pick, a sixth-round pick, or a seventh-round pick for Parker” I’m assuming that since they’ll take a 7th rd pick, the talk of a 5th or a 6th round pick is just in case Vinnie Cerrato is interested.

Wow, you’d think that AJ would show a little more love to the guy who helped get Marty Schottenheimer fired.
Parker was a solid player, but his last f-in game:

Actually, this move makes a lot of sense…Jurevicius has stated this season may be his last. That was before the obligatory staph infection took over his knee. Parker also is familiar with the Browns scheme since Rob Chudzinski brought it with him from San Diego. Every year the Browns say they want to get Josh Cribbs more touches and they never do. Travis Wilson hasn’t done anything but steal money since he came to Cleveland. Wonder if Parker can play cornerback?
