Finally, the Tennessee Titans seem to be figuring out that they have a quarterback who can rocket the ball down the field with barely a flick of the wrist.

Titans quarterback Vince Young had been unfairly compared to Mike Vick during Young’s first two seasons in the NFL.  For starters, Young doesn’t even run the ball as well as Steve Young — Vince will never be the kind of ground threat that Vick was or will be again, if/when he is reinstated.

Unlike Vick, Young has the size to see down the field, and the arm strength to get the ball there.

Sure, Vince still throws the ball like Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite.  But regardless of how it comes out, once it’s out it soars.

Last year, we chided the Titans for not allowing Vince to go vertical.  This year, the Titans look to be preparing to do so.

I have been wanting to do it,” Young said, according to the Tennessean.  “But it’s a lot of work, knowing your receivers and who is out there running and things like that.  You have to put it out there and let them do their job as receivers.”

Though the team has been working more on deep passes during offseason practices, coach Jeff Fisher is predictably coy about the extent to which the long ball will be used.

“It’s hard to say now,” Fisher said.  “The defense will dictate for the most part and when there are opportunities we are going to take advantage of them.”

The difference is that, when defenses gave the Titans opportunities to go deep last year, the Titans didn’t take advantage of them.  And those opportunities will continue to be there until Young and his teammates can prove that they’ll be able to do so consistently.
