As it turns out, there are worse things you can do with a bottle of champagne than spray it into a crowd of strangers.
Giants cornerback Geoffrey Pope faces felony charges in Detroit after allegedly hitting a man over the head with a champagne bottle.
The victim is the son of a local television anchor, and he took 28 stitches to the ear.
Pope was celebrating his birthday. We hope that, when he blew out the candles, he wished for a good defense lawyer.

So what have learned in the past week (or so):
1) Hit a man over the head with a champagne bottle and be charged with a felony.
OR
2) Spray a crowd of dancers with champagne, and become the victim of a felony.
Anybody see a common theme here…put your hand down if you play in the NFL.

I hoping it ends up a felony conviction with Goodell imposing a season long suspension.
The guy is a punk and the financial loss of a season’s worth of wages would do more to change his behavior than our court system.

Geoff is a friend of mine, and I am really disappointed with this news. He’s a good guy, but he’s clearly made a big mistake.

And JimmySmith, Geoff is not a punk. I will admit he did something really stupid, but this is one incident and that does not make him a punk.

That’s too bad because he would have made the roster if Aaron Ross, Corey Webster, Sam Madison, Terrell Thomas, and Kevin Dockery all suffered serious injuries during training camp.

ChrisJNelson,
What’s your definition of a punk if hitting another human being over the head with a champange bottle doesn’t quite rise up to that level?
The real issue is that athletes are dealt with inside our legal system with kid’s gloves (OJ Simpson, just recently Lynch of the Buffalo Bills) and it gives them a false sense of entitlement.
Call Pope what you want but in the eyes of a law abiding public, the guy is a punk.

I am in no way defending what he did. It was a stupid, stupid thing to do, it was wrong and he should pay the consequences of the law. I just don’t feel one instance with no prior trouble makes him a punk. If someone has shown a pattern of such behavior, like a Pacman or Chris Henry, then I can understand the label. But as someone that knows Geoff, I know he is not a bad guy and rather just someone that made a very stupid mistake.

Making a mistake is doing 55 in a 40 MPH Zone. Hitting a guy in the head with a champagne bottle is not a random act of violence, its a sign that his ability to control his actions have taken a very long vaction. The remedy is an equally long vacation surrounded by similar minded people who tend to penalize you for dropping the soap. This should be taken seriously by the Giants and the NFL, that playing pro football is a priviledge and if you are going to abuse your fellow citizens with champagne bottles, you are unworthy to wear an NFL uniform, join our punk friends on Sunday afternoon and watch it on TV with the rest of us.

Even as his friend, I fully think he should suffer the consequences for his actions. But once he has paid those consequences, whatever they may be, then he does not deserve to be punished further. Maybe this will end his career, especially since he only came in as an undrafted free agent and hadn’t really established himself yet. But Geoff is a good guy who really f’ed up.

Now that Geoff Pope has been cleared of all charges, I am sure that all of you self-righteous nitwits will not be back to state how wrong you were about him. Geoff is not a critical player to the Giants and he his deep on the depth chart, but he didn’t deserve the comments that he received here. Come on now.
…and Jimmy Smith, you want a mistake? How about how you call yourself “Jimmy” when your name is James? Are you a twelve year old? Only children and adults with low intelligence go by cute names ending in y. Little Jimmy; that has has a nice ring to it; Little Jimmy.
