Though the AP headline-writers focused on the homage to the late Fred Blassie, the real import of the comments of Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris regarding the “classy” nature of talks culminating in his new contract with the team is that Harris has taken a shot at linebackers Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher.
“We didn’t try to go out there and talk about one another or dispute different things,” Harris said of his efforts to get a new deal. ”I feel like we did it all in-house.”
“I would never go out and talk about the Bears in front of the media or disrespect my team,” Harris added.
It could make for an interesting dynamic in the locker room when training camp opens, especially if Urlacher’s less-than-classy (in the obvious opinion of Harris) efforts to land a new deal have yet to pay off.
Though Harris doesn’t expressly call out Briggs or Urlacher, it’s likely that either or both of them will conclude that Harris has stuck his nose in a place where they think it doesn’t belong.

Urlacher just sent a text to Harris:

Tommie Gun knows better than to call out Lance Vance Briggs and Brian the Texter Urlacher, doesn’t he?
Doesn’t he realize that those guys take up HIS blockers so HE can get to the ball carrier? Oh wait… nope, its the other way around.
Urlacher and Briggs are gonna have to suck up any comment Harris has, because he’s the true centerpiece of that front seven. He keeps the big ugly angries away from the high paid celebrity LB whose face goes on Nike commercials.
Now, it’d be a lot more cooler if Harris could play 16 games a season, but who cares, these are the Bears we are talkin’ about!

Good company man not bad-mouthing the organization by bad-mouthing the disgruntled teammates.
Is he angling for a post-playing days career within the organization? In most companies, these guys that sell out their peers are the ones that get promoted to management.

Nobody will ever confuse Harris with a member of Mensa, so I wouldnt worry too much about this. He won’t call out his team, but he is fine with calling out his team mates in the media? Just tackle the guy with the ball and shut up!

Actually, you could confuse Harris with a member of Mensa, he’s rather smart; take a look at some of his past interviews. And that’s why I’m kind of sure this wasn’t a shot at his teammates. This was a shot at Chad Johnson and others who talk a bunch of crap.
Yeah, Briggs said stuff to the media(we’ve forgiven him), but Urlacher has never verbally threatened anything. Plus our defense is together.
This is more Florio bullsh** posturing to generate headlines.

Why stir up contention where none may exist. Harris is speaking for himself and there’s no need to read between the lines here. Perhaps Harris knows things we don’t know, perhaps he knows where he stands with those guys already, or perhaps he’s simply stating where he’s coming from in handling his business with the Bears.
Some of these comments are ridiculous, as is the headline.

Tommie Harris keeps contract talks in-house and gets the shorter-term deal he wanted all along.
Briggs and Urlacher go public and Briggs settled for a lesser deal and Urlacher’s dispute hasn’t been resolved.
See any patterns?

This is blown way out of proportion. Yes, his comments will be percieved as directed at lanc briggs and urlacher, but he never mentioned them, and for all we know someone asked him directly “would you go about your contract in such a way”. To frame it like he’s pointing out the stupidness in his teamates is dissengenuous. But if he did, they deserved every bit of scrutiny he gave them and more. what were they 7-9 last year with an average defense, worst year from urlacher ever and they start complaining and holding out. Meanwhile, briggs should be more concerned with the status of his lamberguine than what Harris thinks about contract negotiations.
