Legendary broadcaster and former NFL player Pat Summerall is recovering from emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding.
Summerall, 78, is recovering in a Dallas-area hospital. The bleeding apparently was the result of a reaction to medication that Summerall is taking.
In recent years, he has had a liver transplant and hip replacement surgery.
Better known for his broadcasting than his playing, Summerall teamed for years with John Madden, first on CBS and then on FOX. When yours truly first started watching NFL football on a regular basis (a long, long time ago), Summerall and Tom Brookshire formed the No. 1 broadcasting team on CBS.

….I’m also old enough to remember Summerall and Tom Brookshire….Summerall was THE MAN…GREAT VOICE and to me that’s the big thing, I don’t need anyone to “explain” the game to me. I want somebody with a GOOD VOICE. ….the only thing we have nowadays is a bunch of squeaky voiced geeks doing the games….SEE: Joe Buck…

Gents, that would be Tom Brookshier. Still remember when Brookshier was an Eagles DB and Summerall a NYG K in the 50s and 60s. They were a great broadcasting team, the best of their time for NFL games, in the 60s and 70s.
In his prime, Summerall was the best play-by-play man in the business. Later on, in his mid-to-late Madden years, not so much. The booze caught up with him, and liver #1, and he degenerated in front of our eyes & ears on the air. Sad that it happened, and sad that it is the only, or at least dominant, image that most younger folks have of him. Godspeed.

Summerall used to be one of the best in the business.
It’s quite a shame, because in his later years, I can’t tell you how many times he completely mangled some poor player’s name.
I personally hope he doesn’t try and take another job, because he’s just too old and senile I believe.
I hate it whenever someone sticks around too long and does stuff to tarnish their accomplishments from years past, just because they didn’t know when to give it up.

I definitely miss Summerall. His voice, with Madden’s, reminds me of my childhood when my dad would watch games on Sunday afternoons. One of these networks definitely should bring him back.

I agree, as good as he was, and he was the best, he was done years ago.
