Back in April, PFT reported that the Packers considered signing Daunte Culpepper. Their GM Ted Thompson indicated that they preferred to go with younger options behind Aaron Rodgers, however.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette has a new wrinkle to that story. According to their sources, Culpepper actually turned down a $1 million offer from the team shortly before the draft. That may explain why the Packers added Matt Flynn in the seventh round after they’d already selected Brian Brohm.
If he did indeed turn down that offer from Green Bay, Culpepper severely misjudged the market. Nobody’s beating down his door and with a first-time starter in Rodgers, there was a chance to find a way back into the lineup. As it stands now, he’ll probably need an injury to a veteran to get a look this summer.

“severely misjudged the market”… are you kidding Alper? Didn’t you hear that him and Randy Moss are going to team up again and take the league by storm? Oh wait….my bad.

Culpepper has a history of misjudging his own worth on the market. That is, after all, the reason he isn’t in Minnesota any more.

Mort reported this back at the draft, but said Culpepper wasn’t ready to sign yet and wanted to wait a little while to see what else there was. I remember thinking what was he smoking when he turned down that contract? Where else would he have a better opportunity? A young, unproven QB who can’t stay healthy on the bench, and you’ve got a chance to back him up?

That story is a little difficult to believe. I think Green Bay would be the last team to accept a former Viking quarterback. Very few former Vikings live in Green Bay. I understand that many former Viking players don’t want to play in Green Bay because the community is not very accepting of former Vikings. I think that having a washed up former Viking quarterback replace Lord Favre would be a recipe for disaster there.

Amazing that Green Bay drafted the guy who played Robin Hood in the 1930s to be a rookie QB. I mean, what a testament to our modern day health care system that a man who must be well into his 90s is getting a shot to play in the NFL, let alone get drafted in the 7th round.
Amazing.

Culpepper has been misjudging the his career ever since he hurt his knee, but then his ego has always been inflated. He got away with it when he could perform and he had coaches willing to treat him differently than everyone else. Not so anymore. He also has made the mistake of acting as his own agent–there is no one to tell him the truth, only his “Team Culpepper” entourage. The truth now is that he is on the alumni lists of three teams with no option for a fourth.

The FA market is weird this year. There are still quite a few big name players out there (although their quality is debatable).

Didn’t Gilbert Brown play in Minny before he brought the gravedigger to GB? I also believe that Conrad Bolston is a former Viking. The Pack doesn’t sit under the table waiting for scraps like the Vikings do, but we’re not afraid of former Vikings as a rule.

He could still end up in several different places. San Francisco has kind of a shaky QB situation with Alex Smith really being quite disappointing over the past couple of years and Shaun Hill is still somewhat of an “unknown”. Hill came on pretty strong last year and I actually think he will start for San Fran this year. Apparently they are really high on JT O’Sullivan, but seriously…JT O’Sullivan?
The other team I could see giving Culpepper a call is the Arizona Cardinals. Leinart hasn’t been up to snuff yet and Warner is good, butare they willing to give him another contract? Culpepper could immediately step in there and compete for a starting position.
The bottom line is that Culpepper is just not that good anymore and he hasn’t really played in the past 3 years, so he is probably pretty rusty. A team would have to be very patient with him if they brought him in to compete for a starting position.

Even if Culpepper misjudged his value, the moment one of the starting QB’s in the league grips their knee and crumples to the turf, he’ll probably be the beneficiary.

culpepper was made by moss, and appears to not be a student of the game.
he also has real small hands for big man = fumbles…
i bet martz calls the tune as to who starts at qb in frisco, and i dont see martz agitating to get chauncey pullpecker.

Sidenote: Joey Harrington got cut by the Falcons, then re-signed for $1M. Just for perspective. And thus far that was the only offer. Does Gruden know this guy’s available?

Don’t forget Koren Robinson, post drunken high speed chase.
And, I wouldn’t exactly call Ryan Longwell and Darren Sharper “scraps.” Sharper may have lost a step since his time with the Pack, but he has made it to the pro bowl as a Viking and has been a solid veteran presence in the secondary.
