Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson is among the former teammates of Steve Foley who are expected to testify in Foley’s lawsuit against the city of Coronado and a Coronado police officer who shot him in 2006.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Foley’s civil trial, which began yesterday and is expected to last four to six weeks, will include testimony from Tomlinson and several other Chargers, as well as Foley’s mother. Foley will also testify.
In his opening statement yesterday, Foley’s attorney said, “This is the story about the destruction of a dream. The crushing of a career. It’s tragic because it was totally unnecessary.”
The police officer, Aaron Mansker, says he followed Foley because he suspected him of drunken driving, and that he shot Foley because he feared for his safety.
Foley pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drunken driving. Mansker was not charged, as the county district attorney’s office ruled the shooting justified.

Shame. How does the cop not get punished at all?
Well, it is Cali.

As a huge Charger fan, I was torn on this one. Foley put himself in the situation where he was drunk and was out on the road. The officer was wrong because he didn’t follow procedure. I hate that we lost a very important component to our defense. But Steve is ultimately responsible for this situation. If his drinking demons from the past were coming back, he should have asked for help.

Anything LT saw will not be admissible in court because he was probably wearing a visor.

His testimony is a legal nullity as he was wearing his visor while taking the oath.

He’s going to get millions, as he should. Driving under the influence is a terrible, dangerous crime, and rightfully results in a suspended license, fines, and increased insurance rates. It’s not supposed to result in gunshot wounds to the body. The cop put HIMSELF in a spot where he felt threatened and “defended” himself. If he really cared that much about getting a drunk off the streets he should have radio-ed for back-up and not entered a situation where he had to use his gun. Being off-duty, I’ll bet Foley just noticed some random non-police car following him, got sick of it, and decided to confront the person.

How does an offduty, non uniformed police officer get away with shooting a citizen? Why didn’t the cop call for backup? The response time for Poway’s law enforcement is something of legend. Plus, CHP patrols that stretch of Interstate 15 like hawks. Mansaker was out of line, and should have to pay. The guy was a CORONADO cop! Has anyone looked at the distance between Coronado and Poway? All that time, and he couldn’t call someone?
If some car was following me, I’d probably advance toward them too. It’s sad. But the city will find a way to avoid paying. Freakin’ pigs.

Maybe a few of you geniuses should realize that off duty police do not have police radios in their personal vehicles.
It is the evil brute criminal here that escalated the situation. If you remember his girlfriend with an outstanding warrant went into this drunk’s house already. The fool former Charger charged the police officer instead of entering his home. Officers always carry credentials. There was no reasonable explaination for charging after the officer.
Once again it is some crazed fool who thinks he doesn’t have to be reasonable or behave around police officers. Fools who always demand “respect” sure don’t know how to demonstrate any.
Why is it only players of a certain ethnic background have to escalate every encounter with the police. A few reasonable words with the officer always resolves things in an adult manner.
Some of you need a reminder of that the criminal’s blood alcohol content was WAY over the limit.
