As first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bears have signed defensive tackle Tommie Harris to four-year extension.
As learned by us, the four-year extension is worth $40 million in new money. We’re also told that Harris will earn $27 million over three years, which will make him the highest-paid defensive tackle in the league.
Harris would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency after the 2008 season, but he undoubtedly would have been slapped with the franchise tag in 2009.
He’s now under contract through 2012, setting him up for another healthy contract that reflects the realities of the overall market and increases in the salary cap (if there still is one) five years from now.

Yes this a good day for the Bears, and us fans. I would not be surprised to see a Urlacher deal real soon. I hope an Urlacher contract is incentive based in case his medical (back/neck) concerns turn ugly. If he performs, great , he gets paid(I am hopeful he will with a huge chip on his shoulder). If he can’t perform up to his standards the Bears are not hurt financially.

Harris is worth it, and they can use a rock in the middle, since they’ll see Adrian Peterson twice a year.

This deal is good for the Bears and Tommy. Tommy has proven he can be one of the best DT in the NFL. The Bears should be worried about his health. Great news for Tommy and the Bears. Next up…… Hester!

Finally, the Bears make a move that is not considered addition by subtraction. Harris is the anchor of the defense. Now if they can just stay healthy and somehow find an offense between now and September.

Yeah, all well and good, as we need Tommy to be here, but with him making 10 mil a year, what’s Urlacher gonna want now?
I love Tommy, but he’s good for 10 games a year. And he’s hardly the face of the bears.
This Urlacher thing is going to get UGLY.

Gameday, I don’t think they will be last place in their division, remember they do have the Lions there. A good resign to keep Tommy there.

In all seriousness….Why would anyone want an extension to play for the Bears???
I’d be all for being a free agent if I were on the Bears.

Not a Bears fan, but I believe Detroit is still in Chicago’s division and they are always bad.

About damn time. With all the money thats getting thrown at sub-par players in Free Agency, this is well deserved by arguably the best DT in the NFL.

@gameday - In the 4 years since Lovie was hired, him and the Bears’ “iditic” (whatever that means) GM have a 36-28 regular season record with 2 division titles and a superbowl appearance. How many other teams have done that well over the last 4 years?

GREAT signing!!! In 2004 I went into my yearly draft drinking game, designated amount of beer pounded per conference drafted, saying I would pound a 40 of Olde English if the Bears selected Tommie Harris. They did, and I almost did!!! Made for a fun day.
The Bears do a great job with their defensive players. If they can get a good running game going and if Orton or Grossman can become good game managers and not give the game away this team will be serious conteders for the next few years.
Can’t wait till ‘08!!!!

None of the Bears fans that have posted comments have actually spelled TommIE’s name right. I’ve met him a couple of times through FCA at OU. The dude’s hilarious, and a great person both on AND off the gridiron. Bears-Vikings games are going to have some of the best OU players from the last couple of years.. Harris, Dusty, Mark Bradley, AD, and Ruuuuufus. There are thirty-six former Sooners in the NFL today that are on fifteen teams, with the Ravens leading the way with six players. Ah.. the joys of “multitasking” .. TGIF.
