As Cowboys cornerback Pacman Jones attempts to put behind him the misbehavior that marred the first three years of his NFL career, Jones is putting “Pacman” to rest.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Pacman no longer wants to be called Pacman.  (And so plenty of folks surely will continue to call him “Pacman.”)

Instead of attempting to adopt a new moniker (e.g., “T-Bone“), Jones simply wants to be known as “Adam.”

Jones is, as a practical matter, parting ways with an identity that has been with him for most of his life.  The name was applied to Jones during infancy, because of the zeal with which he attacked a bottle of milk.

But maybe Jones realizes that the time has come for him to part ways with the person he has been for most of his life.  Though it’s symbolic, it’s a symbol that he just might be maturing.

We’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.  For now.

UPDATE:  Please suggest your own new nickname ideas for Pacman in the comments.  A reader already has suggested “The Artist Formerly Known As Pacman.”  We like it.
