Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, a free agent who was slapped with the franchise tag, is willing to sign his tender offer and report to training camp — as long as the Titans agree that he won’t get franchised again next year.

Haynesworth’s agent, Chad Speck, tells Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean that the parties are far apart on a long-term contract extension, but that he’s hoping they can work out a compromise that would get Haynesworth in camp.

“We have spoken several times in the past few weeks and our conversations have recently focused on an idea that I proposed in March which would require Albert to sign the tender but in return the Titans would agree not to use the franchise tag on him again next year,” Speck said.

The franchise tender would give Haynesworth a one-year deal with a guaranteed salary of $7.25 million. He would then become an unrestricted free agent in 2009.

Speck compared the current state of Haynesworth’s negotiations to where players such as Shaun Alexander, Lance Briggs, Nate Clements and Asante Samuel have been in the past. Alexander and Briggs signed long-term deals to remain with their teams after playing a season under the franchise tender; Clements and Samuel left to sign long-term deals with other teams.
