With 2005 first-round draft pick Cedric Benson now having plenty of time to captain a ship under the influence of Captain Morgan, the Chicago Bears have one less running back on the roster.
But they don’t plan to fill that void. More specifically, they don’t plan to fill it by signing a veteran like Shaun Alexander or Ron Dayne.
“We don’t have any plans to do that,” Smith said. “From Matt [Forte’] to Adrian Peterson to Garrett Wolfe, to P.J. Pope, Matt Lawrence, we like all of our players and those are the ones that we’re going with.”
Then again, if one of the guys currently on the roster blows out a tire during training camp, phones will be ringing, everywhere except on the S.S. Cedric.

Ron Dayne is a Fat piece of trash.
Shawn Alexander has glass knees, and all the aggression and tenacity of a wilted pansy.

I don’t know much about AP for the bears, but I’ve seen Garrett Wolfe play in college. And that kid has alot of talent.

I’m thinking Lovie is confusing his Adrian Peterson with the one that resides in Minny…
Just like he confuses a good QB with Orton and Grossman.

There’s a different vibe with Matt Forte than our previous running backs.
In Forte I trust.

If one of these guys isn’t the 2008 version of Ryan Grant, they’re gonna need to switch from Gatorade to Liquid Schwartz to generate any sort of offense. Every Bears fan I know has been grumbling about this.

I don’t get the Bears philosophy on offense. Is it play unproven players and hope we can score 9 points a game? AP is a dynamite special teams player, but he is no more than a #3 back on offense. Wolfe is a shifty runner but is just too damn small to help out consistently. Who knows what Forte will be, and that’s the point, no one knows. I believe Kevin Jones would be a great insurance policy for the Bears. If he stays healthy he is a damn good back. Angelo should try and sign him to an incentive laden contract.
It’s been tough watching the Bears offense for a long time, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better and I don’t understand what they are thinking.

greensmackginny - thats funny.
NYBearsFan - As a staunch Bears fan, I somehow still believe we could field a potent offense. Our problem last year was our swiss-cheese offensive line. Not Griese, not Grossman, not Orton (well vs Minny anyways) could get anything done! In hindsight, the fact that Thomas Jones was able to make chicken salad out of chicken shit was amazing considering the quality of our offensive line. Grossman had no time and there werent any holes to open up.
As for Wolfe, I think Garrett can be productive for the Bears as a 3rd down back. Also, if you look at Adrian Peterson’s situational stats (see the Pro Football Prospectus from 2005-08), he is highly productive when he is not a starter. Like you said, great special teams player and good reserve. Lets see what this Forte kid has. He showed me alot in that LSU / Tulane game where he had to earn every one of those yards plus hes a solid pass blocker, which we need all the healthy pass blocking bodies we can get.
As for Bernard Berrian - goodbye and good riddance. I think were better off with Devin Hester anyhow. Aside from that gaffe vs the NY Giants (likely would’ve left the NYG out of the playoffs had he caught that), Hester’s shown he can come in and do exactly what Berrian has done. I see 50-60 catches and 900 yards for him. If we can get anything out of Booker, consider the swap with Moose a wash (love moose, just was old and dropped too many passes).
All in all, I think the Bears are gonna be fine. Its that defense we have to worry about…we dont get pressure on the QB, its gonna be another long season in Chicago.

Liquid Schwartz, nice Space Balls reference.
The Bears still prefer to live in 1985. I’m sure we’ll see Tommie Harris get some carries this year.

Why would they need one?
Jerry “I’m a genius just ask me” Angelo has once again outsmarted the entire NFL by picking up Wolfe in the 3rd Round last year and Forte in the 2nd Round this year!

Slizz,
Yeah that Hester play was tough to watch, especially since I was watching the game with a ton of Giants fans. I’m still optimistic because I think our defense will regain it’s full form. Everyone seems to be healthy. We have the best 2 Cover 2 corners in the NFL and they shut a lot of people down. If Mike Brown can stay healthy, and there isn’t a bigger IF about anything in the world right now, he is one of the biggest defensive playmakers in the NFL. We all know what the front 7 can do barring any injuries, so I am confident that we can compete not just in the division but overall in the conference if we can get any kind of offense going.
I think Jerry Angelo has done a good job overall. He just makes mistakes with all of the high profile players that’s why everybody is down on him, and this RB situation is another example of that.

LOL, can’t really think of another Bears player the Giants could use.
