Cowboys safety Roy Williams, who has found himself on the wrong end of extensive criticism of late despite five straight Pro Bowl appearances, has addressed the situation in detail, and has vowed to have a big year in 2008.
“[T]here are a lot people questioning if I still got it,” Williams said, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I am going to show that I still got it. I am happy people are criticizing me.”
Still, Williams is confused by the recent flood of questions regarding his ability. “Where did it all come from? That’s the first thing. It came from one of my teammates [Greg Ellis]. . . . I kind of understand [where Greg was coming from]. Then I don’t. But it’s OK.
“Then the media has said some really hurtful things . . . like trade him and cut him. It did sting. It really did hurt to see that stuff.
“Ever since I re-dedicated my life to Christ is when I started catching all this hell.”
If catching hell includes being under contract for $3.72 million in 2008, then we’d like to catch a little of it, too.

Good question, but it doesn’t pertain to Roy Williams. In his case, he found Jesus THEN his play started falling off. mikemboston, I do think that there’s a connection.
Main reason he “catches hell” is because he doesn’t talk to the media too much anymore. I can’t really blame him for that, the media in sensationalistic and sucks major ass, especially the local D/FW hacks, who are lazy and prefer the sports news to write itself. Few years ago he wrote an “anonymous” letter in which he criticized the media for their methods and posted it in the locker room and I think they hold that against him too. No matter what you think of how he plays, he’s a good guy that never gets in trouble off the field and he does a lot of charity work that nobody ever hears about because the media rarely reports it. Right around Mother’s Day, when Warrick Dunn was deservedly getting props for helping some single moms get housing, in the spirit of Mother’s Day I made a post here about Roy Williams doing a lot of good work to help single moms but guess what? It never made it past Florio for whatever reason. This post may not make it to the site either, but it is worth mentioning, so just in case:

Roy has always had a problem covering. It doesn’t mean he’s not good. They just have to use him the way he ought to be used. Polamalu wouldn’t fit on every team in the league, and neither would Bob Sanders. That’s not saying they’re system guys. They’re both really good safety’s, just really good in different ways.

Stop being a media lemming. You don’t get 19 INTs, including 3 for TDs in six years without having any cover skills. Dawkins had 18 INTs in his first six seasons and hasn’t taken 3 to the house in his entire 12 year career but nobody ever questions his coverage skills despite the fact that he’s a free safety and should have better numbers. Dawkins was burnt toast last year, by the way. When he was healthy anyway. Dawk’s played 4 full seasons out of 12, Williams has never missed a game because of injury, and he plays special teams as well as D.

I forgot how many shut down safties there are in this league.
Ok, so maybe Chris Cooley has his number, seems to me Cooley is pretty damn good. And I can’t stress how much I hate the redskins.
Williams had a down year last year, it happens to all of them. I don’t see anyone up in arms when Urlacher gets run over or when Champ Bailey gets beat deep(both of which happen). This comes with the territory of being high profile and a Dallas Cowboy. Derek Jeter’s errors make SportsCenter….This is how it is when you play for certain franchises in sports.

I expect Roy will be removed in the nickel defense this year as he was at times last year. We’re already preparing Anthony Henry to take over. Every OC in the league knows that he is our weakest link in coverage.

This didn’t sound right so I checked it out… Dawkins only missed significant time (more than three games) twice in his career in 03 he played 7 games in 07 he played only 10.
Also a bunch of 8 years he played 14 or 15 games was due to the eagles resting players at the end of a regular season with a post season spot wrapped up. So to use that to imply that he’s injury prone is kinda stupid.
I know you say you say you don’t need to be objective but it helps people take the things you say seriously if you’re not as blatantly slanted.
The truth of the matter is that Roy Williams is OK he’s not real good in coverage but he’s a big hitter and an ok starting safety. He used to be a very good one now he’s average. Trying to pick out certain stats in order to compare him to Dawkins is silly. First of all because they do different things on the field and secondly because Dawkins was a much better player than RW in their respective primes and even an extreme homer cowboy fan should be able to admit that.

Roy Williams should realize people are criticizing him because his skills have diminished. He is a disaster on coverage. He used to tackle people so hard that you could almost feel it at home on your couch. Now he kind of just moves slowly around likes hes walking on the moon.
No one cares that he found Christ. We watch to see him make plays and the Cowboys pay him a nice chunk of change to play some defense

You are technically correct he played all 16 games only 4 times
But saying he finished 4 full seasons out of 12 is intentionally misleading. It is to imply that he was injured the other 8 seasons, which is not true as I say only 2 major injuries in his 12 years. If you can’t make a point honestly it’s not worth making
If as a cowboy fan you enjoy hating on Dawkins, have at it, I ain’t mad at ya, but counting against him seasons in which due to his good play the team rested him in the final games is ridiculous. Also having won the NFC East 5 times from 01-06 they probably rested him more than twice.

I trace his declining play, and the end of fans’ love affair with him, to the Redskins Monday night game in….(was it 2004 or 2005?) when Santana Moss toasted him twice for late game TDs to cost the Cowboys the game. He has never been the same since, and his “why is everybody always picking on me?” routine has earned him nothing but scorn from media and fans alike. Christ, as in all things sport, has nothing to do with it.
