When the Falcons selected cornerback Jimmy Williams in the second round of the 2006 draft (37th overall), team owner Arthur Blank boasted about his growing collection of former Virginia Tech players.
“Now, we’re looking at five players on our roster from Virginia Tech in Michael Vick, DeAngelo Hall, Matt Lehr, Bryan Randall and now Jimmy Williams,” Blank said. “So, we’re starting to build a little fraternity here of players from Virginia.”
In little more than two years since then, the “little fraternity” has performed like Bluto and Otter and Hoover and Flounder and D-Day, and Blank has become Dean Wormer.
Williams was the last to go, released on Tuesday by the team.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Williams had fallen out of favor with the new coaching staff. He showed up for voluntary workouts weighing more than 230 pounds, and he was arrested last year for marijuana possession at a time when the club was reeling from the Mike Vick dog-fighting fiasco.
Technically, Vick is still on the roster. But it’ll be a very cold day in Hotlanta before Vick ever suits up again for the team.
Unless Matt Ryan turns into a complete bust before Vick finishes breaking rocks.

Since when did Emmit Smif start writing for PFT?

I dont know how he was in the pros, but I remember thinking how over-hyped he was in college. He seemed to play slow and looked overweight back then.

It sounds like someone had the munchies. Williams must have been in Professor Jennings’ class.

I was into the Kiper/McShay hype about this kid, thank god the Bucs didn’t draft him.
Also as the Panther fan said above, I too have lots of schadenfreude at the Falcons demise, especially when it comes to the smug, way too hands-on Jerry-Jones-like, owner Arthur Blank.

There are still a lot of Vick kool-aid drinkers here in the ATL. Even if Matt Ryan leads the Falcons to a Super Bowl, they will always say Vick could have done it better.
I’m not a Falcons fans even though I live in the ATL, but I just hope they can turn it around and rebuild this team in a few years. It’s a start to purge to team of all of the dead weight.

Huh? Did a Bucs and a Panther fan just throw rocks out of their glass houses?
Fighting dogs, raping co-eds or putting the hit on your pregnant wife. And one of those dirt bags is still active on a (Tampa)roster.
Hmmmm.

The Vikings finished 30th in pass defense and smoking a little weed will help him fit in with his new purple-clad teammates.
Now all the Vikings have to do is overpay him and it will be a perfect fit. Beside Fred Smoot has moved on

The Falcons just drafted a ton of guys out of VaTech at a time when everyone knew VaTeck was crawling with creeps. Is Williams the guy who bought a car that cost more than his first year salary because he was so sure he’d be an R1 pick?

I never understand this about someone who climbs to the level of the NFL. Its your mother freaking job to stay in shape. You have very few responsibilities other than learning the playbook and working your ass off during workouts. I know its a little more complicated than that, but damn, c’mon. I wouldn’t apply to be in the coast guard if I couldn’t swim. Neither should guys like this have gotten this far without figuring out that you have no future in this business if you don’t have/develop good work habits. Don’t piss millions away because you can’t stop from choosing McDonalds over Subway.

Yes Bucs & Panthers fans are trashing your team Falcons fan — don’t blame us that your teams hopes were hitched to a bunch of turds from VaTech — that’s Arthur Blanks and Rich McKay’s fault and has nothing to do with anything or anyone on the Panthers or Bucs, past or present.
By the way there is a big difference in the cases you cite — Vick admitted guilt in a court of law and so did Rae Carruth. Stevens settled out of court, never admitted guilt, and so far has only been convicted in the public because of a newspaper story that you don’t know for sure is 100% accurate. If anything the Duke lacrosse case goes to show that one should be skeptical of what the media reports. I’m certainly not condoning that alleged atrocious behavior, just saying you weren’t there so you don’t know what happened for sure.
The evidence I can point to is that Stevens has toed the line and by all accounts turned his life around in the past year in Tampa and I don’t know why he doesn’t deserve a 2nd chance on a 10 year old charge that was settled out of court and investigated by every team in the NFL prior to his being drafted in the 1st round by the Seahawks.

Stevens is a turd and is just layin low. Lets not confuse layin low with actually taking responsibility for past actions.

Hahahaha. Thats funny Herc.
So under your moral compass a rapist can walk if he lies about it first, then admits to the act only under overwhelming physical evidence (totally not like the Duke case where there was NO physical evidence), then gets several DUI’s/reckless driving charges and manages to stay out of trouble for (barely) a year?
Ask Stevens’ condo neighbors if he’s turned his life around.
Ask the girl he sodomized if she cares.
And to compare Rae Carruth to Vick shows how much human life has been devalued in our society. Rae was directly responsible for the deaths of two human beings because he didn’t want to pay child support. What Vick did was stupid and inhumane but not in any way as heinous as premeditated murder of a pregnant woman.
It’s jock sniffing fans like you that empower these turds to act the way they do and get away with it so long as long as they can play worth a toot.
And yeah, I admit to being a Falcons fan but I was one of the many who never tried to defend what Vick did. Don’t paint all of us with that brush. He’s paying the price for hubris, arrogance and inhumanities to animals but most of all he’s paying for not being responsible for his actions. As Florio has said, if he had come clean early in the process, he would have been suspended and maybe even received probation. Who knows? He was an amazing athlete who was entertaining and frustrating but unfortunately he never had the drive or maturity to become the QB his talents merited.
