If they lose to Min, they could beat Cle, or Jax. Or lose all 3 and go 8-8.

Hey, it's funny, I wasted two days at work talking about the HOUSTON TEXANS! They're not even my team!

Can we just say 7-9 and agree to disagree? And how you think you're gonna waltz into Minnesota and steal a game on the road is beyond me.

Okay, here it is

@pit loss
bal win
@ten win
@jax loss
indy loss
mia win
det win
--bye--
@min win
cin win
@indy loss
@cle loss
jax loss
@gb loss
ten win
@oak win
chi win

They can win those 9 games. Or if you prefer, swap out one of the jax losses and the minnesota win. Or split tennessee and jax. And who really knows how good cleveland is, I can see them in that one.

This is all just speculation, but 9 wins is very doable for this team.

In fact, I can and WILL bet on another 8-8 season... and am predicting 9 wins btw.

Just so you know... the Texans led the league in players going to the IR last season. We lost Dunta Robinson, Schaub, A. Green, Andre Johnson, and many others all for lengthy periods of time last year. Those are HUGE pieces. AND WE STILL WENT 8-8. Say what you want about that Jax game, but we whooped them playing just as many back ups as they did. Not to mention we won big... and lead the overall series against Jax and always play them tough at home. And if you know the history with Jax, then quit being so naive like that game would have been some sort of a lock. I mean... if AJ doesnt get hit over the middle in week 2 and we dont lose our best player for half the season... who knows how well we finish? Point being we will be as healthy as any other team going into next season... and its the NFL like you say... maybe its the Titans or the Colts turn to get ravaged by injuries?? We got 8 wins last year despite all of our injuries. And what did we go and do this off season... get even more depth to soften any bad breaks we might endure. This is a better team than last year... PERIOD!!!

@ Kotite
"I appreciate your loyalty to your team"
-FYI, not even my team.

"I get this isn’t the Texans teams of the past, but you guys are starting to sound like everyone who picked the Cardinals to make the playoffs for the past 4 years."
-Or just like everyone who still maintains that the Bengals are great. I said before, I don't see them making playoffs. But I can see 9-7.

@aj
"No one is silly enough to be predicting a Div championship but anything less than 8-8 is certainly a disappointment this year."
-Good point.

I'm too scared to ask what 9 games you think they'll win. It's good to be optimistic. I just hope you handle disappointment well. You'll know by Week 5 whether or not you're playing for a playoff spot. Half your divisional games will be played by then. If you're 0-3, book that vacation for January.

I'm in my 4th decade as a Houston NFL fan. I know bad teams, bad coaching staffs, bad GMs, and bad owners. Right now, I feel as good about all of the above than I have for a while.

Like I said before, I think 9-7 is about where they'll be - and where they should be given where they're at in terms of coaching, talent, time in scheme, etc. I know the team will be disappointed (realistically and rightfully so) if they're not playing for a wild card spot in Week 17. They may not make it this year but there's no reason to believe they'll be worse than last year, and yes we've all looked at the schedule.

In terms of depth, Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak have completely turned around the roster since that pile of poo that took the field in 2005. Smith has pulled in a considerable amount of talent and the depth is as good as it's ever been. There are holes, like every team, but there are fewer of them now than ever before.

I know it's easy to get excited about an 8-8 season after all you've been through as Texans fans, but the reality is... you would have been 7-9 had the week 17 matchup vs. Jacksonville meant anything to their seeding. That 8th victory was against a Jags team with no Garrard, Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew, or Rashean Mathis. Your only win in the Division last year was against backups. Week 6 the Texans were manhandled in a 37-17 loss. I know the history between Houston and Jacksonville. I honestly think the Texans should be better than Tennessee, but they are 2-10 all time vs the Titans and 1-11 all time vs the Colts. The first thing is winning Divisional games. I get this isn't the Texans teams of the past, but you guys are starting to sound like everyone who picked the Cardinals to make the playoffs for the past 4 years. Okay.. your O-line is getting better. Young guys like Amobi Okoye, Super Mario, DeMeco (stud) and Jacoby Jones give you a lot to look forward too. Hell, I even like Andrew Walter. But there is not a ton of depth and this is not a forgiving league. There is noticeable improvement in Houston, but you are not there yet. Yes, anything can happen.. but I wouldn't bet on another 8-8 (7-8*) season.

If Mario Williams continues his development as a premier DE, and Colvin can stay healthy, then this could end up being a steal with Colvin playing situational pass rusher opposite of Williams.

Thats why you go w the trends. From 2 wins, to 6, to 8. As well as looking back on the 06 draft... they hit on most all of em. 07 is shaping up to be the same way. Free agency has been pretty solid on most fronts thus far as well. Meaning... you dont know, but from how this ship has rited itself since the new regime took over (bad bad shape.. as they took over a 2 win cap strapped team).. its hard to argue against continuing the trend. But yes, anything can happen.

Kotite said: " The O-line gave up less sacks because the team had a better QB behind it. One that was mobile and played in a scheme that emphasized a quick release. Schaub and Rosenfels get rid of the ball better than Carr who was a deer in headlights."

Yeah, we know. We watch the games and you're basically reiterating what I said in response to your "when are they going to fix the o-line" comment. The point is that is wasn't all the o-line, and with Gibbs in the house there is reason to believe their overall performance will improve even more, especially in the running game. The Texans fans responding to this thread are (for the most part at least) not a bunch of NFL newbies and blind homers. We know exactly where this team is relative to where it's been and where its headed, so don't act as if you have a monopoly on objective opinion about our team. No one is silly enough to be predicting a Div championship but anything less than 8-8 is certainly a disappointment this year.

Kotite,

I am guessing the rush average will go up this year with Alex Gibbs as the guy in charge of the line. It has everywhere he has been, and he is a good fit with Kubiak. Gibbs+Kubiak > Sherman+Kubiak.

Funny how everyone seems to think that *they* are the realist and everyone else is living in a fantasy land. Nobody truly knows until they play the games.

The real world is the NFL where teams rise and fall rather quickly these days. The real world is one where the Texans added one of the best O-line specialists in the history of the game in Alex Gibbs and added a first round tackle to the unit and traded for a new center from Denver who is familiar with his scheme. Alex Gibbs will do WONDERS for the running game. See his resume for yourself:

The O-line gave up less sacks because the team had a better QB behind it. One that was mobile and played in a scheme that emphasized a quick release. Schaub and Rosenfels get rid of the ball better than Carr who was a deer in headlights. The Texans still didn't average 100 yards rushing last year. That puts a lot of pressure on the passing game and the defense (which is finally getting some momentum). I don't see them starting 2-3 or finishing 7-4, but of course, I live in the real world.

Houston will like Rosey but the guy is getting on the down side of his career! Look like the team is starting to get some sense of competition in the division. I be concerned about his health if New england cut him loose then there is a hidden problem. We was great with the Bears but that was back in 2001-2002.

Good Luck Texans!

And if they can somehow scrape out a 2-3 record over the first five weeks, and stay healthy, I don't think it's unreasonable to say they could go 7-4 over the last 11. And 9-7 is about where I put them this year.

Kotite, re: your comment about fixing the o-line, the Texans were 6th best in the NFL in fewest sacks allowed last year. For the few remaining doubters it was made brutally obvious that a major part of the 'o-line problem' was the dude with the bitchin hair and the Mickey Mouse gloves. And they gave up those 6th fewest sacks while racking up the 11th best passing yards in the league ... without Andre Johnson and Schaub for several games. Some of these old stereotypes are just that.... old.

Kubiak says he'll be ready for training camp. He also said he'd miss 3 or 4 weeks last year. How long was he out? I'd love for him to play every game; he's their most exciting player, but I'm skeptical. He's signed through 2014. They're not gonna risk his career just because they want to win now. They're gonna hold him out of practice and be very cautious with his progress. Even if he does play every game, they will be lucky to go 8-8 again. I appreciate your loyalty to your team, but look at that schedule and tell me how you are better than .500.

"And who knows how many of those Andre Johnson will play in."

Umm... all of them? Its the NFL, we don't know who what when or where ANY PLAYERS will get hurt. Andre played in the final 7 games of the season last year AFTER his injury that kept him out half the season. He was fine then, and just had his knee scoped for improvement. He will be ready to go in training camp and will be fine. The Texans led the league in starters going to the IR last year. A good luck bounce on the injury front and they will be a legit team for sure.

Texans will be an above .500 team in terms of talent,etc.... and if most other divisions a for sure playoff candidate. But yes, they play in an extremely tough division so we shall see where the actual record falls. I liken them to jump the Texans for 3rd... and its already been said 3rd place in this division last year meant playoffs.

You're right, that is a pretty tough sched to begin the year (other than Baltimore obviously), but I think they could sweep Tennessee. And they'll split with Jax, they usually do. Can they compete with the Colts, probably not, but there are alot of teams that can't.

Do I see playoff's in the future for them? Probably not, but it wouldn't be the most shocking thing in the world to me (especially since I think they are better than the Titans). But they definately are moving in the right direction. With any luck, they'll have their first winning season.

Week 1 at Pittsburgh
Week 2 vs Baltimore
Week 3 at Tennessee
Week 4 at Jacksonville
Week 5 vs Indianapolis

That's a lot of "must-win" games to start the schedule for a team that was 1-5 in the conference last year. And who knows how many of those Andre Johnson will play in.

Hey Kotite,

The Texans went 7-3 vs the rest of the NFL last year and dominated the NFC East last year in the regular season. They would have been in the playoffs in that division. They have steadily improved and the O-line is nowhere near what you are thinking it is. The Texans were imbetween the Colts and the Patriots in terms of sacks allowed last year. And Andre is not slated to miss anytime.... he will be back for training camp later next month and ready to go. You will come to find that this is not the same Texans team under this new regime you have come to know.

"Not in the gutter anymore" is the new legit?

Andre Johnson is a question mark to miss time already for the upcoming season. Ask David Carr why the QB was sidelined? He may be able to clue you in. They'll compete. Maybe enough to finish third in the division.

"Adding a talented, yet oft injured LB is gonna take the Texans from 24th in the league in team defense to legit? Is he gonna somehow fix the O-line too? Not in the AFC South. Not even in the NFC West"

I don't know what team you're talking about, but the Texans went 8-8 last year, all the while being in a division where they play 3 playoff teams twice a year. They also did this with a second year coach. Oh yea, not to mention, their best player (Andre Johnson) was injured for most of last year and their starting QB was sidelined too.

Not that I think they are great, but you gotta give 'em credit.
They are not in the gutter anymore.

@CoryDangerous - True, Colvin was solid when he was playing, but he's been so injury prone. The Pats never got the LB they expected from the Bears.
