So what’s the best way to rid an NFL franchise from the stink of a washed-up top-ten wide receiver? Possibly, the ideal strategy is to sign someone else’s washed-out top-ten wide receiver.
Earlier this year, the Vikings traded receiver Troy Williamson, the No. 7 overall pick in 2005, for a sixth-round pick and a box of SnackWell’s cookies with a “sell by” date of November 2007. So now the Vikings reportedly are sniffing around receiver Charles Rogers, the No. 2 overall pick in 2003.
Rogers was cut by the Lions in 2006, but failed to land with another NFL team. As rumor/legend has it, Rogers ran the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds or slower during one or more workouts in the wake of his release.
Most recently, there were reports that he’d sign with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL. But Rogers apparently backed out.
According to former Saginaw High coach Don Durrett (who talked to the Saginaw News and whose comments were picked up by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune), Rogers “has” a workout with the Vikings.
The timing is unknown. “Has” implies that it hasn’t happened yet. But it gives no clue as to when it might be.
The Vikings clearly need help at the position. Since Randy Moss was traded to the Raiders, the team has struggled to find anyone with even a third of his ability. Troy Williamson was supposed to be “the guy,” and he ended up being “the guy who can’t catch.” Koren Robinson (another former top-ten flame-out) showed promise in 2005, before playing real-life “Need for Speed” with the Mankato police in August 2006.
Though there’s currently cause for optimism, due to the strong rookie year of Sidney Rice and the free-agent acquisition of Bernard Berrian, a gamebreaking wideout is still missing from the offense.
The fact that they’d even kick Rogers’ tires tells us that the Vikings are willing to look anywhere in search of their next Moss.
Or at least their next 33 percent of a Moss.

I still can’t understand why they ever made the Moss deal. Seriously. Daunte Culpepper agree’s with me on this one.

Who knows….it could work out. As a Viking fan, I hope so. I agree they did upgrade the WR position, this iff season, and Rice is definitely a promising player. None the less, WR is a position you cant have too many game changers at. I wish him, and the team the best in 2008. GO VIKINGS!!!!!

Red McBastard didn’t want to pay Randy - that’s why he was traded. Zygi Wilf has said he would never have made that trade.

The Vikings are lords of the division in terms of “stealing” pieces from the other 3 teams (and only in those terms). At best, they overpay decent players (Berrian, Sharper) and at worst they hire bad coaches (talk about Tarvaris as one of the worst QBs all you want, but Childress is absolutely one of the worst HCs.) So it doesn’t surprise me that they’d at least take a look at Rogers when no one else in the NFL is interested.

As a Lions fan it would be greay to see Crog back in the division
If he makes the Vikes. They are in deep trouble.

I don’t see it happening. Since when is Rogers a “game changer?”

Well first all I have to say is its just a work out. You bring a guy in check his stats. check his knowlege of the west coast offense. And see if he can pass a physical. I think his ability to block and catch the ball would be more important that being able to strech the field. We had that in Williamson. He just could not catch the ball. Plus being from the same division it would allow us to review his knowlege of his former team. Then whos to say he would make it past training camp. Rice will make the team this year Bobby Wade, And Berrian. Not to mention Aundre Allison could break the lineup this year. Hes got hands hes got speed. and performed excellent on special teams last year. It just a matter of him running the right route and blocking down field. If roger is brought in he would be competing for the fourth receiver spot with allison. at this point its going to be allisons to loose. I think it would be stupid to not look at rogers. But looking and signing are far appart.

As a HUGE Vikings fan I must say the Moss trade was a good trade…and I absolutely have GINORMOUS “man-love” for Randy! The Moss trade (while the actual trade had horrendous results) actually got the Vikings going in a different/the right direction! The money we could’ve been paying him instead went to Defensive players. With Moss still here I doubt our Defense is anywhere near as good as it is now and I’m pretty sure you could subtract “Purple Jesus” (Adrian Peterson) from the Vikings as I’m sure our record and need for defense with Moss still here would not have allowed us to draft him. All in all I think the Moss trade was an EXCELLENT trade when ALL things are considered! …Also, I TRULY believe Moss received a bad rap with the media!

Perhaps the Vikes could look at David Terrell who I believe is still looking for a job. I loved it when he made a catch for a two yard gain and acted like he just made the OT winning catch in the Super Bowl!!!

That’s what we love about ya, PFT. The first I saw of this was at VikingUpdate (http://min.scout.com/2/762501.html). They said: “This tidbit likely would appear elsewhere if it could be confirmed…”
But why confirm, really? In PFT-land, the Vikes will have LeCharles Bentley and Charles Rogers any day now.

anybody who believes a bit of this rumour doesnt know the vikings. or football for that matter. even the 5th wideout on the vikings roster has more drive and ability than rogers. they may work him out but i personally would be shocked if he made the 53 man roster. Stupid rumour. Go Vikes
