A reader has sent to us a link from the Killeen (Tex.) Daily Herald from earlier this week regarding former Bears running back Cedric Benson.
Buried in the item is a suggestion that former Bengals receiver Chris Henry has been “working out (unofficially) with the practice squad for the Saints in New Orleans.”
If true, this shouldn’t have been the 17th paragraph of an item that focuses on another player. It should have been the headline.
So we’re very skeptical about this claim, and we mention it only because it appears in what appears to be an actual newspaper (which of course means that it has instant credibility).
The primary problem with the story is that a guy can’t work out with a team “unofficially.” He’s either on the team or he isn’t; otherwise, the maximum roster could be supplemented with “unofficial” players who would be ready to step in whenever one of the “official” players is injured, traded, or cut.
Also, there is no “practice squad” in June. Teams create a ”practice squad” after forming their final 53-man rosters. In September. For now, all of the players are in equal standing.
But, hey, maybe the story is right. If it is, however, it’s a huge deal, for multiple reasons. First, it shows that Henry isn’t withering on the free-agent vine. Second, it shows that the Saints might be engaged in some practices that fairly could be described as cheating.

The Jaguars had players work out with the team last weekend (I think) on a ‘tryout’ basis during mini-camp. To my knowledge, they did not waive anybody to do this, but most of those players they tried out did not practice during OTAs this week. They did waive a running back this week and sign one of the tryout players. I don’t think there’s anything underhanded about this.

This info his the Saints message boards yesterday too (SaintsReport.com) and this article was the first time anyone had heard anything about Chris Henry with the Saints.
If this is really happening, wouldn’t the Times-Picayune or WWL radio have reported something on it. How does a small paper in Texas get this scoop, but no other outlet covering the Saints has anything about it.
I’m highly skeptical that this is taking place.

Well, Chris Henry should be working on his prisonware. He still faces the charges in Cincinnati, and if convicted, or if he pleas out, he is in a direct violation of his probation in Ky. and Fla. The prosecutor in Kentucky is just waiting for the chance to throw Henry in Jail.

The Saints are not desperate for a WR, and I seriously doubt that Sean Payton would put up with someone of Henry’s “ilk”, much less put his team at risk by “misinterpreting the rules”.
Has to be a BS story.

This was obviously an attempt for the writer of the story, Bill Begley, to get his point accross. He made up some information that he though wouldn’t be seen by a lot of people, especially a lot of NFL observers. Currently, the article does not contain a piece about Henry. Begley, or his bosses, simply went back and changed that bogus information after a large group (PFT.com) got ahold of it and spread it.
Kudos to PFT.com for blasting false information for the sake of finding out accurate facts. Shame on Bill Begley for making up false information in order to support a claim that doesn’t need any support as it stands right now.
