Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the New Orleans Saints have signed defensive end Will Smith to a six-year contract extension.
According to Schefter, the deal includes $26 million in guarantees.
Smith sat out voluntary off-season workouts to show his displeasure with his old contract, and he was reportedly miffed that the Saints took care of their other starting defensive end, Charles Grant, before they took care of Smith. Grant, who has 12 fewer sacks than Smith in the last four years, signed a seven-year contract with $20 million in guarantees last year.
Smith, who started all 16 games for the Saints last season, was entering the final season of the five-year deal he signed as the Saints’ first-round pick in 2004, and was scheduled to earn a little over $1 million in base salary in 2008.

Is Rosenhaus the agent? If so, he’ll probably sit out the next mini camp.

Great signing for the Saints! Fans can’t say Tom Benson isn’t opening up the check book to keep the good players in New Orleans. Now they need to pay Marques Colston.
