Jamison Hensley and Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun are reporting that 11-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jonathan Ogden will meet with the Ravens today and formally announce his retirement tomorrow.
“It took a little while to decide,” Ogden told The Sun. “You just can’t make a decision like this overnight.”
Ogden said the decision ultimately came down to his chronically injured big toe, which he hyperextended 16 months ago, and which still hasn’t fully healed.
“I tried to work out, I tried to practice on the toe,” Ogden said. “But it never came back to 100 percent.”
Ogden would become eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Other players who could be considered in that class include Brett Favre, Michael Strahan, Bryant Young, Warren Sapp, Steve McNair, Larry Allen and Junior Seau.

thats about as solid of a HOF lineup you could ask for. Its going to create a serious logjam for future years, too. Sapp is going to get screwed out of a well deserved spot.

you know, i’m a bengal fan, but that he’s a great guy. I couldn’t think of a better tandem than him and willie anderson if they were in their prime states. although, this will make things easier for odom… and he needs all the help he can get

Ya seriously Bryant Young? I know he was a good tackle for a lot of years but I would not have even thought about him for HOF when you got a guy like Warren Sapp who dominated the league for years.

Warren Sapp had much less impact and sacks than John Randle, and Strahan’s numbers are worse than Chris Doleman’s.
If those guys aren’t in, it is hard for me to call either of those guys first ballot hof’ers.
Oh yeah, strahan played in new york, so he probably is. solid logic. too bad Doleman’s numbers are better in the same number of seasons.

You forgot two things in regards to Strahan. The single season sack record and a superbowl ring. HOFer voters love that stuff. I’m with you on John Randle though, he was better than Sapp. People who think otherwise must have short memories.

Absolutely Bryant Young! No way he’s first ballot guy, but his numbers are right there with HOF’ers Howie Long (13 Yrs/198 Games/84 Sacks) and Dan Hampton (12 Yrs/157 Games/57 Sacks) and future HOF’er Sapp (13 Yrs/188 Games/96.5 Sacks). Bryant Young ((14 Yrs / 208 Games / 89.5 Sacks)

I agree irishpat, Sapp is going to get screwed out of a first ballot spot, and it’s not right. It’s only because he’s a jerk, but is every HOF’er a choir boy? With all due respect to Bryant Young, who’s had a very good NFL career, it’s quite embarrassing for anyone to put him ahead of Sapp. Sapp in his prime was the most dominant DT in the league. How many other DT’s have 96.5 career sacks? He’s the prototype Tampa-2 undertackle, and teams who employ a similar penetrating system are always looking for the next Sapp. When Tommie Harris started to come on strong, he was labeled the next Sapp, and every top 1-gap DT in each draft, like Glenn Dorsey and Sedrick Ellis, are compared to Sapp. I will always agree with anyone who says Sapp is an asshole, but when he was on top of his game, nobody brought it like he did.

11 Pro-bowls in 12 years,Nine time All Pro selection, Superbowl Ring, and a class act. Ogden is one of the best offensive lineman of all time and reinvented the left tackle position. A first ballot HOF without question!

I completely agree with this post:
“Farve - Lock
Strahan - Lock
Ogden - Lock
Sapp - Lock
Seau - Lock
Allen - Marginal
Young - Marginal
McNair - Don’t make me laugh”
If Seau comes back this year and isn’t eligible until 2014, maybe Allen or Young get in that year. Otherwise it will be the top five listed above.

Allen Marginal? Don’t make ME laugh. Larry Allen is one of the best offensive lineman to ever play the game. If HE is marginal, everyone on your list is marginal, besides Favre.
By the way, Larry Allen has officially retired.

@capslockkey
I recognize Strahan has those things going for him, but think New York is a much bigger factor in his favor.
Doleman has 9 more sacks in his 15 years, twice as many picks and safeties, and to me is highly worthy of HOF induction.
Funny thing is in Doleman’s first year of eligibility, the committee even left his name off of the 100 player list sent out to vote the finalists from. His real issue is that he is a quiet guy that doesn’t self-promote.
Count Kevin Greene as another guy that should be in. if 2 of the top 4 alltime official sackers aren’t in, I really don’t see how a guy that is 5th is a first round lock when those guys aren’t in.
oh, and btw, Doleman had 21 sacks one year. One could argue that Strahan only legitimately had 21.5, not a big difference.
But you (we) are right, John Randle’s numbers and impact dwarf Sapp’s. I guess Sapp has a ring, too, but for me that should only matter for QBs, not linemen.

I don’t know how anybody could say Larry Allen isn’t a lock for the HOF either.
He is the best guard to ever play the game, and when the Cowboys were dominant, he slid over to be the best left tackle in the game.
I’m a cowboy hater, but Larry Allen is a lock just like Ogden is. I just think that if Cris Carter has to wait, Strahan should have to wait until Chris Doleman and Kevin Greene get in.
I think Sapp should be in as well, but he should have to wait for Randle.
I know Paul Zimmerman hates Randle, though, so that might have a negative impact, although I think Dr. Z has much less influence than some think.

Ok just for clairification, I’m not saying Young and Allen are marginal for the Hall, I’m saying marginal for their first year up. And yeah, Strahan is in because he plays in New York, but I agree guys like Greene and Doleman (and Jacob Green for that matter) should be in already.
Would Harry Carson even have been considered for the Hall if he didn’t play in New York? No way. But that’s the way it is.

Anybody remember when opposing defensive linemen would get “Allenitis” on the week their team played the Cowboys? It’s because Larry Allen didn’t just block a guy, he’d punk them with a tall stack of pancakes and send them home butt-hurt and crying to mommy. Too bad he ended his career as a fat, out of shape 49er. He was always a guy that had to be motivated to stay in shape, and they just let him do what he wanted to do, whenever he wanted to do it.
“Guys get sick all of a sudden before they play him. Whether it’s the flu, ankle, foot, shoulder or back. I have all the respect in the world, but he’s a legalized killer.” - Strahan
