Some time last weekend, thieves broke into an E.A. Dion jewelry store in Attleboro, Massachusetts, disabled the alarm, cut a hole in the roof and got out with a safe that weighs at least 1,000 pounds.

Among the items in the safe were gold, gems — and some of the New York Giants’ Super Bowl rings. Police say the total value of the items stolen was about $2 million. A store employee discovered the crime Sunday when cut phone lines prevented her from checking her e-mail.

The owner of the jewelry company, Edward Dion Jr., said of the burglary, “we’ve run into a bit of a hiccup.”

Police are investigating, but they have provided no information about suspects, other than to say, “whoever did this knew what they were doing.”

It’s not clear how many rings were taken; most of the players received their rings at a ceremony last month. The store is about 10 miles from Gillette Stadium, where the New England Patriots play.
