Steelers linebacker Larry Foote has started every game the last four seasons, which might cause some NFL players to think they have job security.
But since the guy behind Foote on the depth chart is last year’s first-round draft pick, Lawrence Timmons, Foote actually thinks he has no real chance of keeping his job.
“I don’t think it’s competition,” Foote said, per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I really think it’s just a matter of time until they throw him in there, just because of the politics of the game — and it looks like he can play.”
Timmons played all 16 games last season, but he didn’t start any, and he contributed more on special teams than on defense. Foote seems to think that’s about to change.
“We don’t know yet because he hasn’t been out there,” Foote said of Timmons, “but it looks like he can get it down. My time might be winding down at that position. It’s just a matter of when the coaches throw him in there.”
Although Foote can’t be happy about losing his job to what he thinks is “the politics of the game,” it’s clear from the way he always follows his comments with praise of Timmons that he has no intention of causing any type of locker room distraction. And ultimately, being that kind of team player is probably the best way for Foote to keep his job.

More like the economics of the game, assuming the kid is making a lot less.

Greg Ellis meet Larry Foote, Foote meet Ellis. I’m sure that one of you has a lot to learn from the other.

Foote certaintly isn’t a headline maker, but he is smart, hard working, gets done what is asked of him, and from what I’ve read a really stand up guy in terms of his family and community. Timmons might provide some more altheticism and add a little more creativity to Lebeau’s defense, but I really hope we don’t lose Foote. Farrior is also a Free Agent after this season, so in ‘09 we could see Timmons take Farrior’s spot and Foote back to his position.
Either way, depth is good, especially at LB when you run a 3-4.

Timmons is an idiot. Rumor has it that he had no clue where to line up at before the snap of the ball. They said he looked lost at the position. Not good on the stillers part in drafting him first last year. Woodley is so much better of a player and he will make a greater impack on the defense side of the ball. If i was foote I would not be worried.
Timmons = BUST city with a side of weak sauce

I liked Foote, but his best year was the year the Steelers won the Superbowl. After that, he has fallen off a touch. He’s a good blitzer, especially on the delayed blitz or the crossing blitz with Farrior. However, he’s lacking in pass coverage.
Although the article says Farrior is 33 with 1 year left on his deal. So, as good as he is, he won’t be around forever, unless the Steelers pull a Belicheck and keep him forever.
Anyway, wasn’t Timmons and OLB in college? I wonder how he will translate to middle.

“being that kind of team player ”
Indeed. Honesty, but not being an A-hole.

What a nice thing to look forward to, as a potential veteran player for the Steelers.
No one is naive to how the business works, but there are ways to allow players to leave with some class, based on what they’ve done for the organization.
The worst part is that Steeler fans seem to be proud of the fact that “we know when to cut a player… look at our past… Faneca?, Porter, Lloyd, blah blah blah”.
I’m surprised in this era of free agency, and slimy agents, that the no loyalty clause hasn’t caught up to them.

As a fan, I certainly second guess the Steelers handling of Faneca. But if I were a player in the league, I would view how they handled Faneca as a positive. They made an offer, they knew they couldn’t match his expectations, and they let him get on with business. They didn’t jerk him around, they didn’t tag him to get an extra year.

Ive always liked Foote. Not the best LB out there, but a solid system player and a stand-up guy. Im not convinced that Timmons will take his job, either. With all due respect to Foote, id LIKE Timmons to be good enough to take his spot. I mean, he was a 1st rd pick, but something tells me Timmons isnt going to pan out.

Foote is a good character guy, but let’s be real. He sucks. He played ok during the SB run, but the last 2 years he was absent. Name one big play he made the past 2 years. If he gets released, I guarantee no one picks him up, but if he does get picked up, he will be out of the league by 2009. Timmons is an upgrade, no doubt. I like Foote as a person but he just can’t get it done. He was owned by OL’s and even FB’s last year. Name another elite team in the league where he would start. Good luck.

firleysdaman, you’re wrong re: the Foote “sucks” comment.
2007 numbers: 81 tackles. 3 sacks. 5 passes defended. 1 INT. That’s a good, productive defensive player. That’s 90 instances right there of getting it done. The Steelers would love to keep him.
I can’t stand hearing that players who don’t put up ridiculous headline-making superstar numbers every single game are players that suck.
Save the “sucks” routine for draft busts, cowards, and wastes of humanity like Pacman Jones.

Darth,
I agree with you. It’s a bit harsh to say Foote sucks. But I feel strongly that he is not an elite ‘backer, especially in the Steelers tradition. He plays hard, but he got run over multiple times by running backs last year. He is a character guy that I like, but as a fan, we need more out of the middle ‘backer position. I will never forget his INT in the Broncos AFC champ game. That said, it’s time to move on, we need a more elite backer to be a SB team. Remember Farrior in ‘04 & ‘05? That’s what we need.
As an aside, I’m watching NFL network right now, and I think it’s curious that there haven’t been comparisons between Swann and Randy Moss. I was born in ‘75 so I can only rely on highlights, but seems they have/had similar game. Go up and the the damn ball.
Anyway, kudos, be well.
