I had a looong day with the law gig and an even longer night at the little league field, and I’m getting a chance right now to take a peek at the extremely fine pinch-hitting efforts of MDS and Josh Alper.
And, of course, I’m exercising my prerogative to chime in with my own half-assed musings regarding matters on which they’ve already written.
This first one isn’t a scoop, just semi-educated speculation. Center LeCharles Bentley, who was released earlier on Wednesday by the Browns, could be the next starting center of the Minnesota Vikings.
Before going any farther with this one, I need to be clear. It would be a huge mistake for the Vikings to dump Matt Birk in favor of Bentley. Bentley is damaged goods, and Birk is a bona fide leader in the locker room.
With that said, it’s fairly obvious that the Vikings are planning for life without Birk, who is signed through 2008. And the best way to make the transition would be to bring in Bentley right now, sign him to an incentive-heavy deal with per-game roster bonuses, and give him a chance via training camp and the preseason to make Birk and his $5.32 million salary an unnecessary luxury for 2008.
Here are the two other factors that have caused me to connect the dots in this specific way. First, Bentley’s agents surely had something else lined up before asking out of Cleveland. Otherwise, Bentley would be using the remainder of the offseason workouts in Cleveland to persuade another team to become interested. Remember this — Bentley’s agents, as legend has it, had a pre-free agency deal lined up with the Eagles, on which Bentley and his agents, as legend has it, reneged before signing with the Browns. There’s no reason to think that Bentley’s agents haven’t done the same thing in this specific case.
Second, though Vikings coach Brad Childress was no longer with the Eagles when the team made a run at Bentley, Childress had graduated to the Vikings not long before the 2006 free agency period opened. And that means that the Eagles had likely focused on Bentley before Childress left, and that Childress was privy to the internal reasoning that prompted the Eagles to decide that it would be prudent to pursue him.
Again, it’s all speculation. But at the same time, it makes sense. The Vikings would love to find the long-term successor to Birk, and Bentley (if healthy) gives them a very viable option.

I say keep Birk and let Bentley move to right guard. Then Peterson might rush for 3000 yards.
Plus the arctic temperatures in Minnesota will help kill any bacteria still oozing out of Bentley’s knee.

Why would he go from one team with a decent center b/c he doesnt want to possibly sit (although he’d probably end up starting @guard) to another team with a multi-pro bowl center? I can probably name about 10 teams he should sign with instead of Minn. jeez, just off the top of my head sf, mia, tex, chi, atl, buff, philly, det. wow i actually just came up with 8 out of thin air so maybe more than 10 (even though some of you will disagree with a couple i’m sure).

Except for the fact that Bentley left in part because he was going to have to compete for a roster spot in Cleveland. In his mind he believes he’s better than anyone on the Browns offensive line (his own words:”I sat in the [offensive line] meeting room and I didn’t see any Dermonti Dawsons [7-time Pro Bowler] or Larry Allens [11-time Pro Bowler],” said Bentley. “They’re all good players, but there’s no one out there I felt I couldn’t be better than.”)
#2, he doesn’t want to play guard. He wants to play center. Again, something he said publicly yesterday. So why go to a team that already has a starting center?
Find the teams that are hurting at center THIS year and there lies your list of candidates.

Pure speculation. I don’t see it.
If they did sign a lineman, it would be at tackle where Ryan Cook is weak on the right side and Bryant McKinnie is facing suspension on the left side. I don’t see them adding at center or guard when they need help at OT.
And how “long term” can Bentley be? Even if this is Birk’s last season, Bentley would be pushing 30 by next year and would be three years removed from his last productive season.

I would not say, in my oppinion that the Vikings would object to having Bentley on the roster. But it comes down to the price. Birk is 32 and has probably 3-4 solid years left before he gets alittle long in the tooth. And Bentley is as you mentioned damaged goods so to speak. But he is 28 and a six year contract would still be thinkable. And it would depend on what the team doctors would say.

Perhaps Birk becomes the insurance policy for McKinney’s impending suspension. Prior to McKinney they used to float the notion of playing Birk at left tackle when Cory Withrow was thought to be a solid center as well, and we had studs such as Lewis Kelly and Brad Badger playing left tackle.

I wanted Bentley a couple years ago when Birk was coming off Hernia surgery and had 2 bad injury years back to back. It was a win win. If Birk hadn’t regained form, you insert Bentley at center, if he does get back to pro bowl level (which he did)Bentley could have easily been a pro bowl RG. Nearly the same scenario now. Insert Bentley at the RG spot (considering Cook is a more natural center anyway) and if he stays healthy and Birk gets a deal he’ll approve of you got 3-4 pro bowlers on the line with AP behind it. If Birk decides to bolt or hold out put Bentley at Center this year, keep Cook at RG and next year move Bentley back to RG and let Cook and the rookie from Notre Dame battle for the Center job. It’s easily a win-win. All hindering on just how much rust and puss is on and in Bentley’s knee. Hopefuly Birk realizes at this point in his career he’s not going to get a long term deal anywhere and just sucks it up and plays. And if all that pans out look at the depth you have on the line. To bad none of the guys I just mentioned can play LT because we’re going to lose McKinnie for 8 games!

Bentley wants to play Center. That was part of his reason for leaving Cleveland. Not the whole reason but part. In all the interviews I’ve heard he’s made it pretty clear that he wants to play center and not guard. Good luck LCB!

I think that Bentley will go back to what he knows: New Orleans. The Saints have last year’s back-up trying to earn a start, and Bentley would welcome a chance to start again; therefore, he will look for a short term contract with incentives. Moreover, N.O. has done it with a few players on the rebound.

This makes absolutely no sense at all. Steve Hutchinson is locked down at left guard, Anthony Herrera just got a 6 year deal and is locked down at right guard, and it would be idiotic to replace Birk with an older veteran, who has very legitimate and serious health concerns, and oh yeah, hasn’t played in 2 years. Even if Birk doesn’t get an extension (and he will), the Vikings have John Sullivan, Dan Mozes, and Brian Daniels, all who are young guys who could play center.
Not only does it not makeany sense, it wouldn’t be possible, because the Vikings don’t have the cap room to sign a player like Bentley. There are plenty of teams that have cap room, and who need a center, and the Vikings are not one of them.

I don’t know what the Raiders’ cap situation is like exactly, but Bentley to Oakland makes a lot of sense. They’ve been throwing money at damaged goods type of guys with upside (presumably because the other kind won’t play for them), and their offensive line is garbage.
Might as well get someone to block for your past two years’ first round picks so they can actually have an impact (not that they will anyway).
Someone mentioned New Orleans… that makes a lot of sense too. He thrived there, and the Saints lost Faine to free agency.
People have mentioned Philly, but the Eagles are deep at center and probably don’t care for what he pulled a couple of years ago, so you can pretty much rule that out. I doubt he’d make the team.
Detroit, San Fran, and Cincinnati also make sense just because they need help around the o-line, though none of them have prioritized it in recent years.

Dear aaeyers Birk is 32 Bentley is 28 he is younger then birk. Birk is in the last year of his contract. And may or may not get the contract offer he wants depending on how this year turns out. And I would like to point out that the Vikings still have some room under the cap. They just dont have the money in the bank account. plus they still need to sign their draft picks. that should not be too expensive with out a first rounder. My concern would be what McKinnie is going to cost the organization. If he gets cut because of behavior then that will also take away from cap space. But Minnesota has some of the best front office personel when it comes to dealing with the cap.

Plus as long as its a multi year deal you can fudge the cap hit to another year and put it into signing bonuses. And not haveing played for a couple of years I am sure the asking price is reasonable for Bentley. The only issue would be he would want to start. Birk is there now this year. That means le charles would have to wait another full year before contributing. But he could use that opportunity to get 100% Riding the pine. Im not for or against this move. this would be an organizational thing. If you bring bentley in that means that birk is gone after this season. If you dont bring in someone of starting caliber at a reasonable price. Then you need to start looking at signing birk to a Mid-length contract.

That would be a horrible mistake. Birk is only 31 or 32, and not an old 31 or 32 either because he didn’t play at all his first two years in the league, and missed part of 2004 and all of 2005 with a hernia injury. So he only has 7-8 seasons on him, and it isn’t like he plays CB or WR where quickness is most important and a small deterioration can make a player useless in a hurry. He plays the cerebral, weak sister spot on the line, and plays it as well as anyone. He could play for 3-5 more seasons at a high level.
Dumping Birk would be a stupid mistake.

Nice angle on this one Florio but I just don’t see it happening. With the Vikings drafting Johnathon Sullivan this year, I think the writing is on the wall that he will eventually take over at center. But I also think Birk will get the extension for a few years. With him being from Minneapolis and him being very involved in the community, the Vikings would want to avoid any backlash from letting him leave. Plus, it seems the Vikes have been trying to avoid/cut players who aren’t “team” guys so if Bentley was a headache in Cleveland, I doubt the Vikes would make a run at him.

I have to agree about Birk staying. He’s from St. Paul, has set up businesses here (a pair of downtown Sports bar/restaurants), is very active in the community, and has a young family. He doesn’t need to uproot and take a few dollars more to finish his career elsewhere. I expect him to stay employed with this organization in a community involvement role well after his playing days are finished.
From the Vikings perspective, he’s great for community relations (a local boy, Harvard grad, Pro Bowler, family-first type of guy — remember this is the guy who confronted Randy Moss after he left the field before a game ended and the Love Boat thugs for trashing the Vikings image). For a team needing state support to build a stadium, they need him to stick around.
Since he is under contract, reworking his contract was moved to the back-burner while they made some moves to improve the overall talent, but I think they’ll find a way to make him happy and finish his career here.
If a Church wanted to raise money for a new Pew it wouldn’t publicly run off its choir boys.
