Jake Plummer never collected a penny from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but they’re about to collect $3.5 million from him.
Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times reports that the team and Plummer, who retired shortly after the Bucs acquired him in a trade with the Broncos, have reached a settlement in their longstanding grievance.
The terms of the settlement are that Plummer will pay the Bucs half of the $7 million in bonus money that the team said it was entitled to collect. As a result, a scheduled grievance hearing has been canceled.
Plummer was the Broncos’ starting quarterback until he got benched for Jay Cutler late in the 2006 season. He was traded to the Bucs during the 2007 off-season, but decided to retire rather than report to the team.
By trading for Plummer, the Buccaneers had also acquired the right to go after Plummer’s bonus money, and that’s what they did. As Holder has previously reported, the Buccaneers weren’t just going after the money, they were also going after the salary cap space that gets credited back to teams after they collect money from players. Assuming all goes according to plan from here, the Bucs should get an additional $3.5 million credited to their 2009 salary cap.

Maybe he can make some money back by signing a longterm handball contract.

It would surprise me that he has $3.5 in liquid assets. If he does, good for him. He was smart to reserve the cash, knowing full well that it’s not earned until he shows up.

Now the Bucs can go and sign a few more criminals with that money

Plummer had the Broncos contending.. He shouldn’t have gotten a raw deal in the first place. Shanahan definitely screwed the pooch on that one.

Why didn’t he play another year to avoid the money hit? Tampa isn’t the worst place in the world to hang out for a year or two until your contract expires.

I guess I would have reported and let them work out what to do with the logjam they have at the QB position.. might have been interesting, and would certainly have blowed up their claim on his signing bonus..
Who knows as bad as Plummer was able to play, they likely would have cut him in a nano-second.

That’s $3.5 mil in cap space they can use to…sign another QB?

That was one shrewd move by the Bucs for a seventh round pick. Too bad the same could not be said about resigning Stevens.

Even though the Bucs will receive that money back, they have not shown a penchant for spending anyway. It baffles me how they have so much cap room, and did not take any chances to sign any of the big free agents of the off-season. Jon Gruden is definitely on one of the hottest seats in the NFL. Their front office is really questionable in my eyes. They were carrying so many QB’s on that roster and had to cut Gradkowski (who I thought was their best option after Garcia) simply because “there weren’t enough snaps?” I just don’t understand this franchise at all. They got lucky that they’re getting this money back from a player who never even put on a pair of cleats for them.

I guess that is why Allen lingers around down. He might sign scumbags for that team left and right but he gets the owners something for nothing. Just so long as they don’t want any playoff wins he’s perfect.

Now look up exactly which pick it was, and using the numerical values on the draft pick value chart, plug in $3.5 mil to that pick and you can extrapolate the real dollar value of all draft picks relative to this agreement.

I just think the contracts that they work out are goofy. And maybe someone should have talked to plummer before they traded him. My question is now that that is settled does that leave an opening for plummer to unretire and go to a team that he would like. Or if he unretires would he still be obligated to the Bucs, and have to pay them money. Will the bucks cut him now that a settlement is reached?

I think 3.5 million would force me to show up.
IIRC, Plummer warned that he would not show up before the trade was made. He had planned on signing with the Texans after getting cut. I have to assume that he invested wisely to leave it on the table.

greggyd717, gruden is not on a hot seat, much less one of the hottest seats. He and Bruce Allen just signed extensions. They are good for at least 3 more years. Plus they have a good track record, depsite what the big dog says.
Also, Plummer is a moron for not showing up and not trying. If they are going to pay you or take away your signing bonus, go tryout and play, and do a horrible job. Just show up and throw perfect spirals to the defense, it will get noticed, trust me. I hope he didnt have to give up his element.

Considering they have money to burn, this seems like an empty victory. Granted, Plummer is a Honda-driving hippie, so who knows what he’s got in the bank. But hey, the Bucs don’t pay their own players anyway, so what’s the point?

Good financial move by Plummer. Pocket the 7 mil, rack up a years worth of interest on it all, then get to keep half of the principle and all the interest! All without taking a single hit. It was a good financial move for the Bucs too, getting more cash than they would have paid a seventh rounder. Would have been even better if they had cap issues….

Well maybe they can find a QB as we know they need some depth there.

I sometimes hate the fact that contracts in the NFL or so one-sided. The Bucs could’ve cut Plummer and Plummer would’ve been entitled to NOTHING. Suddenly the Bucs are entitled to money because this guy decided to retire.
