At a time when plenty of NFL observers wonder whether quarterback Brett Favre could un-retire and re-join the Packers, we’d be willing to wager that there’s a far greater chance that Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will un-retire and re-join the Giants.
For Favre, the analysis was simple: “Do I want to do it again?”
For Strahan, the question is more complex: “Will they pay me enough to make me want to do it again?”
As of Monday, the Giants hadn’t caved to Strahan’s reported request for an $8 million salary in 2008. But nothing prevents the team from changing its mind today, tomorrow, or on September 1.
And so Strahan can avoid training camp without incurring daily fines in excess of $15,000, and he can wait for the phone to ring and for the person on the other end of the line to offer him $8 million if he comes back.
By then, of course, Strahan’s price could be $9 million. Or more.
We’re not reporting anything in this regard, and we’ve heard nothing to support our suspicions in this regard. But we’ve surveyed many of the headlines regarding Strahan’s decision to retire, and we’re amazed that more folks haven’t realized that this could simply be Strahan’s first call of “check” in a rematch of last year’s game of chess with the team’s front office.

as much as the giants don’t want to give him a payday late in his careers twilight,Strahan is still a good pass rusher, and good mentor for the young talented DE’s the giants have.
take away the 6sack game against weak eagles OT Winston Justice and Osi Yumenyiora has 7 sacks in 15 games. not a very good number for a guy regarded as an elite pass rusher
Justin Tuck is another young guy that notched 10 sacks in 2007 but he did most of that at DT and took advantage of slower guards and centers.I think he’d still do well at LE,but he’d a little bit of a question mark.
the giants still have Mathias Kiwanuka who’d you think would get more snaps at DE and not OLB if Strahan chooses to stay retired.
the giants may have signed renaldo wynn, but Strahans still a better pass rusher in his 15th year than renaldo wynn ever was in his entire career. Wynn was more of a guy who you could count on to stuff the run at DE and you could flex in at DT on passing downs.
without strahan I’d say the outlook is still pretty good, but if Osi has another mediocre season or justin tuck doesn’t play well at LE. the giants may find themselves figuring out how to make a pass rush.

Given Strahan’s recent bellyaching about not having enough money, it seems like his worst move would be to retire with easy money to be made (even if he doesn’t get $8-9 million for 2008). So it’s obvious that some sort of ulterior motive exists.

I would be surprised if the Giants cave here. Not that Strahan isn’t worth the investment, he is. But Strahan’s agent also represents Osi (who wants more money) and then, if you pay both, how long before we hear from Burress who is underpaid by current NFL standards. Not to mention almost the entire O-line is also underpaid by today’s standards. For the Giants, it’s not just paying Strahan, it’s paying all the guys that will be in line after him. Plus, the Giants do have one ace up their sleeve - Strahan lost his shirt in his divorce proceedings. Can he really afford to hold out for 8 million? He’s not going to get that in the broadcast booth. My guess is it will come down to whether the extra money the Giants have already offered is high enough relative to what he could make in the broadcast booth to making playing worthwhile. Certainly, no Giants fan could begrudge him a nice easy retirement as a commentator. He has definitely earned it.

Got it all wrong, Florio. As usual.
His retirement is not money-related.
He won’t come back, like it or not.

If the Giants are 5-3 or 6-2 in the first half of the season and the pass rush needs a boost for the 2nd half of the season, the giants may pay him his scheduled salary for half a season’s work. Both sides would win because extrapolated, Strahan would have that $8 million pay day, and a chance at another Super Bowl while skipping the preseason and reducing the opportunities to get injured.

Patrick,
Sapp doesn’t even belong in the same sentence as the other two. He was a cheap shot artist, who conned the Raiders into thinking he still had something left and then did nothing. Put him in the vote now, since he retired on the field about five years ago.

strahan will not be back,he took a pass on 6.5 mil.
i heard an interview with jay glazer,he states that
it’s over.i believe it because strahan and glazer are
tight and i think they have discussed it.
glazer said that strahan told him his body is starting
to break down and stahan didn’t think it was worth the
effort any more.
strahan has an ability to connect with a tv audience,
a bankable attribute. where ever he goes to work,i hope
they pair him up with a wise ass,it would make for great
tv.
