Well, it’s time to re-set the “Days Without A PFT Story Regarding The Patriots And Cheating” meter to “OO.”
But this latest topic is an oldie and not-so-goodie. It deals with the team’s “massaging” of the injury report, a phenomenon about which we’ve all been aware for years. A couple of years ago, quarterback Tom Brady played several games with a McNabb-style sports hernia, which was somehow kept under wraps until after the season.
In the days leading up to Super Bowl XLII, Brady again appeared on the injury report with his chronic shoulder injury, but no mention was made of the injury to his ankle that obviously limited him during the game.
Now (and as mentioned in a One-Liner earlier today by MDS), Pats cornerback Ellis Hobbs is speaking candidly about the team’s approach in this regard.
Hobbs has told the story of a very real injury to his groin, which became progressively worse over the course of the season.
“From camp, through the preseason, all the way to the regular season, it started aching a little more each day to where it got to the point where we definitely needed surgery,” Hobbs said.
But yet Hobbs showed up on the injury report only once after December 1.
So what gives?
“We keep things under wraps for a reason,” Hobbs said. “We never want things to leak out. Teams can use it against us, and strategize for players that are going to potentially be there or potentially not be there.”
Um, Ellis? Coach Belichick has scheduled you for another surgery. He thinks you need to have your vocal cords removed.
In our view, the league has been reluctant to nail teams that violate the injury-reporting rules, even when they are caught with a smoking gun in one hand and a cookie jar over the other. In the case of Brady’s sports hernia, we concluded that, as long as the truth doesn’t come out until after the season ends, there will be no repercussions.
And, clearly, other teams play games with the injury reports. Our concerns has been, and still is, that allowing teams to give incomplete information creates an incentive for gamblers and those who are otherwise “mobbed up” to provide envelopes full of cash and other inducements to the guy who washes the jock straps at $7.55 an hour in exchange for access to information about who’s really hurt, and who really isn’t.
Perhaps the reality is that the league has yet to come up with a way to effectively ensure that teams comply with the rules regarding the reporting of injuries, and that the league is content with a system that merely creates a general perception that everyone who is inclined to place (or take) a bet has access to reliable information.

“Or are you calling for suspensions and penalities for the Cowboys, Steelers, Titans, Texans etc. etc. etc. etc… ?”
Cowboys have already been fined for it, big guy. Multiple instances of cheating should draw increased levels of punishment for any team that plays loose with the rules like this.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Hobbs play in every game this past season, including the playoffs and SB. Where is there a story here?? This new media cycle of stories needing to be pumped out every 30 mins is really making for some far fetched tales being posted on this and many other sites. I long for the days of the morning paper getting the big scoop, at least then we hade some sanity. This is ridiculous.

Stooooopid! Hobbs played so whop cares. If he had missed games with an injury that was undisclosed then you might have apoint but that was not the case. Why reveal that kind of stuff if the player is going to play? That would be like telling the other team to go ahead adn throw at him since he can’t run! D’oh.
This is just common sense. Get real.
EXACTLY! That’s why Bellicheat doesn’t put in on the injury report. So other teams won’t know a player is up to par.

Who cares what the situation was in Cleveland? He walked into it of his own free will, didn’t he? I swear, Belichick’s the Teflon Don with some of you guys. Nothing ever sticks to him. It’s never his fault, he doesn’t do anything that everyone else doesn’t do, blah blah blah.

Sorry, Footballguy. Can’t be considered the “best ever” if you get busted for cheating. Besides, the Patriots haven’t won the Super Bowl in years. Everything good that they’ve ever done has been done before and done better.
Undefeated in the regular season? Dolphins did that AND won the Super Bowl.
Three Super Bowl wins in four years? Cowboys did it in the 90’s, no videotaped signals needed, thanks. Of course the Cowboys have TWO MORE championships than the Patriots do to go along with the first ever to win three of four Super Bowls thing. Then of course the Steelers and 49ers have 5 each, and the Steelers have the four Super Bowls of six thing that the Patriots can’t match.
What else have the Pats accomplished? What, 7 winning seasons in a row? Please. The record is 20.

“Sorry, that theory was tested long ago. In 1994, Cowboys were fined for not disclosing an Aikman thumb injury that didn’t limit him in practice and did not affect his status as the starting QB for the next game.”
Except they changed the rules about two years ago to stop the Broncos in particular (in this case) from bending the rules. They changed the system to where through out the week, you only list players who did not practice or were limited in practice and the reason why. This rule was not in place in 1994.

So now the story is that Cleveland was the true test although Matt Walsh said that Ernie Adams told him stories about how the Pats were doing the same thing in Cleveland. Patriots haters use Matt Walsh as the bible as the utmost truth except when he said the videotapes of defensive signals weren’t used during the games. Why stop no?
The only game Hobbs missed this year was the one game he was on the injury report. Bill Cowher admitted to lying about injuries on the injury report. Mike Shanahan has been fined for cheating the injury report. The Texans cheated the injury report last season with Ahman Green. What is the big deal? People are manufacturing controversy.

Even if they wanted to look upon that as an accomplishment, it’s a complete farce. Besides the Cheatriots, the AFC East is the laughing stock of the NFL. The Cheatroits practically get six free wins a season and a guaranteed playoff birth for winning that lousy division.

It honestly sickens me that certain persons are allowed to have a say on this matter. I might as well ask my niece her opinion on the matter. If I throw in the fact that Belichick looks like the Grinch, she won’t take his side.
THERE IS NO WAY TO END THIS STORY. IT IS WHAT IT IS. IT WILL NEVER BE SOLVED, NOTHING WILL COME OF THIS. NO ONE WILL PUT THIS TO REST.
Be an adult, give your opinion, and get out. Barking and hollering continually will only fuel whomever you’re arguing with! Do you Patriot haters think any of us Patriots fans will succumb to your reasoning, honestly? Like the light just SHOWN DOWN…
Oh man, I really hope more Patriot fans read my post than Patriot haters so that my rating is higher than a 3/5.

Should teams list every part of the body that hurts?
The definitions are:
(O) Out = definitely will not play
(D) Doubtful = at least 75% chance will not play
(Q) Questionable = 50-50 chance will not play
(P) Probable = virtual certainty will be available for normal duty
Does that mean not being on the list is a certainty the player will be available for normal duty? If Hobbs fully participated in practice all week, should he be listed? Hobbs practiced and played in every game in pain. Is the purpose of the report to list injuries or provide an idea of who will or will not play?
I’d expect that if the Patriots got in trouble for it, the entire team will be questionable every week listing multiple body parts.

vincelombardi,
Belichick made the decision to start Testaverde instead of Bernie. He was getting old and he wasn’t making the best judgements. Cleveland HATED Belichick for doing that, but it was the right move. And Belichick admitted he could’ve handled the media better, but Art Modell was acting like an ass; something like a Jerry Jones-esque character. Art loved the media, and Belichick knew they would hurt his team.
So, no shit. BB appears to be wrong while at Cleveland, but I am still in love with the man. He’s the best coach I’ve seen or heard of. I can’t wait until the next season begins so I can watch my Patriots play.

Any player that is playing above 85% is lying, there is no possible way a player is ever playing above that, and if he can play at 85-65% capacity then let ‘em, obviously Hobbs played very hurt. Hell, in hockey they never specify an injury, they say it’s a lower leg injury, or something to that extent, because they know the opposing team is gonna hammer that part of the body. Plus i think a professional player can tell when his fellow opposition is playing hurt, they just know, because they’ve been there too.

spyboots “EXACTLY! That’s why Bellicheat doesn’t put in on the injury report. So other teams won’t know a player is up to par.”
I would imagine the coaches watch enough video of the upcoming opponent to SEE if an opposing player is DINGED UP. My GOD we as fans can often tell if a player is a little gimpy, I would hope a NFL HEAD COACH could also. But I will say this as far as injurys go, LT looked fine to me in the playoffs. Even as he jogged off the field to call it a day in the first quarter, he looked fine. And anyone recall the game Belicheck and Sait Dungy played totaling like 80 players combined in the injury report. Too many people forget THESE COACHES ARE THE BEST IN THE UNIVERSE. Too many pepole don’t realise the NFL is not Madden 08!
Hobbs was/ is a weak link to the Three time World Champion New England Patriots defence.Plaxico Burress anyone? Yes,that Ellis Hobbs. He also is trying to place blame for his shoddy play (career) on an injury. And pepole don’t think other head coaches can’t figure out that Hobbs stinks? Did you want them to throw Assante Samuals side of the field? Haters can hate all you want. It still dosen’t change the fact that the Pats won three world titles and have lost two in the past 22 years. Sorry folks the NFL aint taking nothing away. No astriks. But please, keep hating. It fuels the DYNASTY.

When are Patriots fans going to realize that the coach of their team cheated, and the only remorse he has displayed is at being caught? From now on, people are going to be skeptical of everything the coach does while his still a coach in the NFL. The Patriots are going to be regarded as cheaters until there is a coaching, and culture, change. All the whining in the world by Patriots fans is not going to alter this perception. Deal with it.

Those of you who believe that everyone would love to have Belichick as a head coach couldn’t be more wrong.
Believe it or not, for some people, winning honestly is more important than winning at all costs. Surely, the NFL has some owners who do not condone cheating to win. I have this last little hope in the integrity of mankind. If I am wrong — oh, well — ignorance is bliss.

Vox - Since Jimmy Johnson stated that he did “it” when the whole videotape thing started, how can you be sure that the Cowboys Super Bowl wins in the 90s were, in your words, “no videotaped signals needed” wins? While no proof exists beyond Johnson’s comments, it does raise the question.
